Definitely a convenient place to meet and eat/drink before Prudential Center games/events.
The "black and tan onion rings" were awesome – beer battered, not greasy, drizzled with honey – very good ! My "Ironbound Burger" – no doubt named after the awesome Ironbound Portuguese section of Newark with all their fantastic steakhouses – was just OK. While the addition of chorizo sausage on the burger was a great idea, the supposed smoked cheddar looked and sort of tasted like "cheez whiz". Bummer.
The tuna burger my niece ordered looked awesome and the pastrami looked great too. My wife's pulled pork was just OK. Little man's pizza was good.
Service was a bit of a mess. While Fernanda, our server, was fun, the bar was undermining her – most food arrived before any drinks showed up. She was smart, however. Free "fireball" shots for all ! Nice work, Fernanda!
Finally, the bill was screwed up – items on there we certainly did not order. Shame shame!
Anyway – the place has a great vibe, food good, ambitious service but gotta send them to the penalty box for the bar service and naughty overcharges!
No Stanley Cup winner here but may be a contender if they can fix their "off sides" calls.
Ok – I'm done with the hockey clichés now!
The good part is that we were seated right away after a basketball game and.. Well that's about it. The rest was pretty bad. The waitress looked like she was upset the whole time. The food was not good at all. I ordered the Asian steak salad and it was awful. It had no taste at all and the chunks of steak had a weird smell to it so I couldn't even eat it. Everyone else ordered the chili, burgers and the wings and they said it kinda sucked. Overall we made the trip to NJ to see our team loose and eat bad food. Total fail. Oh but the bathrooms were clean so I liked that.
Not bad, Edison Ale House! I've only been for happy hour where I'm happy to note that they have decent deals and excellent Edison chips! I'm not a beer fan but they have the standard fare, their house wine is decent, AND they have magners cider, a discovery made by my good friend Lauren S. I think it's a good place to go in Newark where you can sit and chill with friends. I'll most probably be back!
We made reservations through Open Table as we were looking for a nice place before an event at the "Rock" and didn't want to wait. The reservation process through Open Table was great and this was one of the few places close to the Rock that accepted a reservation. Please understand that when we say close, we mean across the street and 2 blocks from Newark Penn Station. When we arrived we were some of the first to do so and took up a spot at the bar. The place was pretty empty at this time, as we came super early with the intention of enjoying apps, drinks, then entrees at a relaxed pace. The bartender at that time was a little gruff and slow with service but we chalked it up to things just opening up. The beer list is extensive and for $6 or $7 a pint you can enjoy some really good beer.
We ordered some apps as we planned on enjoying the Ale House for a while before the event and were waiting for others to join us. Apps were good. We started off with Bavarian Pretzel Stick $8.00, you get 4 per order with delicious cheese sauce. We also had the Edison Wings with Orange Chipotle Sauce, good, more sweet than spicy. Goat Cheese Bruschetta $7.95 was probably the best app we ate. Everything sounds awesome, right? Well, READ ON:
As we enjoyed the apps the restaurant filled up and the service completely disappeared, like POOF, gone. We saw more than one group leave after receiving no service after ten or more minutes. We couldn't find anyone behind the bar for at least 20 minutes to take our next order. We began to get frustrated as well and when our bartender finally came back we tried to order entrees. He begged us not to as the kitchen couldn't keep up and he knew we wouldn't get our order. Yes, the bartender told us not to order from the entree menu. I know he was being helpful because he knew we had to leave for my husband's graduation, but how could the kitchen not keep up when they knew in advance an event was taking place at the Prudential Center? We were hungry so we ordered the chicken slider apps. What a waste that was. The sliders were a joke. Three burnt chicken nuggets with a piece of lettuce equals sliders? What ever. Let me repeat- the "slider" was a sad looking, burnt, partially warm chicken nugget on bread.
Seriously, this restaurant is across the street from the Prudential Center, there have been events there before. If Edison Ale House can't figure out how to staff and manage prior to an event, then shame on them. Our bartender (young guy with red beard) did his best but was alone behind the bar. It wasn't his fault and he did give us shots on the house at the end. However, we will not come back or recommend this place as there are other, better reviewed options in the area.
Until Dinosaur BBQ opened, Edison Ale House was our go to spot for food and drinks before and after games at the Prudential Center. Recently though the service has gone drastically down hill though. The last three times we've gone, we were consistently lied to about how long the wait would be, often being told it would be 5-10 minutes for an hour in a very Seinfeld like way. They also apparently have no system for buzzers and when they run out, as they do before every game, they give them out "randomly", the exact words of the manager. This admission caused us to leave in anger the last time. After being open for almost 5 years, I cannot believe they still haven't figured this out. The bar tenders are also super clueless. Good luck trying to flag one down for a drink order in the huddled mass before a game. Food service, once seated is actually pretty good though. Unfortunately for those waiting, the servers don't really move people along very well and there are often tables seated for a full two hours, not eating anything before games. While they don't rush you, food is delivered pretty quickly and the staff is pretty attentive. The pizza is particularly good as it is cooked on their large brick oven. I really like the diablo pizza which has a nice spicy flavor. The habenero wings are also very good with a nice crispiness and are pretty big. Edison Ale House is a good option for food and drinks before a game, but not worth the wait, especially as it will probably be 4 times longer than they tell you it will be.
Food: the food was fine. I had the roadhouse burger and it was prepared as I like. While a pretty busy burger (comes with burger, cheese, onion ring, BBQ sauce) it is quite manageable. Good size and the role was light and fluffy. No problems here. Fries were good. I got the standard and would do the same next time. Most of my friends were happy as well. My one buddy got the veggie burger with a side salad. He did not like the side salad and said the lettuce was brown. Mac and cheese bites were great and the pizza was good as an app for the table.
Service: our waiter was good. He clearly cared about his customers, but he had his work cut out for him given that the restaurant just changed the menu. Took a little while to take our order and then ten minutes after we ordered our server came back to us and said they did not have what my wife ordered. Kind of crazy.
Misc: manager was polite and offered a free drink for the restaurants's lack of perfection. Good atmosphere. Beers on tap. Great place to grab some food and drink before/after the game, but they need to get their act together.they can go from 2 stars to 3 if management works at it. I would go again and hope they improve the mechanics. If they don't, I won't show up a third time.
This place is where people go to drink before going to the stadium next door. Decent beer , the food is not as exciting as a playoff hockey game, that is for sure.
Went here for lunch with a co-worker on a Tuesday afternoon. We arrived just before noon, and fortunately, just before an inevitable mass rush of customers from the NJIT graduation at Prudential.
We managed to get through the whole lunch without the new graduates and their families pouring in, but the service was still sub-par. It also wasn't clear who was waiting on us. First, it was one person. Then another person. And sometimes the server in training.
My co-worker and I both got the same burger (the one with BBQ sauce, bacon and onion ring). I can't remember the name. I went with the regular fries. He chose to upgrade with the bay seasoning, which also meant his ketchup came mixed with Tabasco sauce, or so it tasted. It was good, but considering the fries are clearly frozen, they should just make this the standard side of fries for all burgers and not charge the extra $1.
The burgers were good. Mine was just a little over-cooked (I asked for it medium-rare), but the bun was nice and soft. Still, for $14.50, they should really give you at least 1/2 lb. of beef. I can't say for sure the weight of their patties aren't 1/2 lb., but they seemed to me like 1/3 lb.
Overall, the location couldn't make for a more convenient spot to stop for drinks before or after an event at The Rock. And the space is nice, but the food is average at best. And considering the speed of the service when they WEREN'T busy, I can't imagine what it's like when they are.
