I'm conflicted when it comes to reviewing the Astor Room. On one hand the movie concept is pretty nifty, on the other the service was appalling. We came here for a bridal shower and given a private room for the event. The room is small but so is the rest of the restaurant. The good thing is there is a direct kitchen entrance from the private room so once the food is done, it hits your table. I overheard the waiter tell the aunt of the bride that he thought this was a birthday party, not a shower, and now they had to re-print the menus. Um…Okay? So the shower began at 11:30AM, the food was not ready until nearly 1PM.
We were given mini doughnuts to nosh on while we waited. They were delicious. I had the chicken and waffles for my entree. Waffles were a bit bland but the chicken was excellent. Probably one of the best pieces of fried chicken I have ever tasted. The orders were inconsistent, though. One person at our table got 2 waffles instead of 4, no powdered sugar, and 1 piece of chicken instead of 2. The eggs benedict also looked delicious. So the food? They get that right.
My water glass was only filled once yet they continued to refill my bellini glass until the end of the event. Odd since they had pitchers of water coming around but good luck trying to get someone to stop and pour some for you. The bathrooms are clean but small and one of the stalls in the ladies room doesn't lock. They do have a great full-length mirror, however, so you can touch up and whatnot. The entrance is difficult to find since it's sort of tucked away next to the studios. If you use GPS to get here, it might tell you to make a left turn where you clearly cannot make a left turn.
Overall not a terrible place but service was definitely off on the day we went. The bride still had a wonderful time and that's all that matters.
Very interesting spot right at the Kaufman Astoria studios.
I came here for the Actoria show which my brother was performing in.
Overall I'm glad I got to experience it. Drinks were good but a little pricey. Luckily there was no cover or drink minimum.
If I ever get the chance I'll come back for sure.
This place is a hidden gem in Astoria. They have live music and it's a great place to either stop by for a drink or to come on a date for dinner. My fiance and I came here one night a few weeks ago for the 2 for 1 happy hour. We then stayed for dinner. We each had the Astor burger and it was delicious. Definitely now a contender for one of the best burgers in Astoria. they also whip up some great cocktails. Highly recommend this place!
I love the Astor Room. It's so classy and fancy. Went here for a wedding this summer and I've been here previously for a Yelp Event over a year ago. But going to the Yelp Event alone didn't give it justice. The actual restaurant space has been around since at least the 1920's and had served as a commissary for stars working in the movie studio across the street to enjoy a meal and cocktail in between filming. The inside is bedecked with fancy chandeliers, a gaudy jewel encrusted bovine, and an Astor Beaver within a space of original architecture and hard wood floors. The beaver actually is an homage to John Jacob Astor and their family since their money and fortune was big on beaver pelting. The more you know.
This particular wedding was situated around brunch. We had an unlimited mimosa, bloody mary, or stella artois set up for a few hours. Those mimosas quickly turned into 'gimme sparkling prosecco, hold the juice'. The options on the wedding brunch menu were for their classic eggs benedict, the challah french toast with a berry compote and whipped cream, or what I ordered with the buttermilk ranch fried chicken and waffles. I have no regrets. These were the most delicious chicken and waffles that I've ever had in my life. The chicken was moist and flavorful and the belgian waffle was super fluffy and came in enormous chunks with a sprinkling of candied walnuts. Portion size this was a beast. All of this came with a side saucer of bourbon maple syrup and a separate saucer of red hot cream. The combination of bourbon maple syrup and a thick creamy sauce churned with hot sauce may not sound like your cup of tea, but trust me in that this a miracle food baby combination.
Fresh hot donut holes were served at the beginning of this fantastic meal with a trio of condiments: vanilla mascarpone, orange marmalade, and raspberry jam. When they say hot they mean hot and they stayed warm for the duration that they lasted on the table. Waiting staff was fantastic for the entire event. Though, near the ending we felt all a little rushed to clean up and usher everyone out for the restaurant's dinner service at 4pm.
After trying their brunch, I would definitely come back though on my own to perhaps try their happy hour: 2 for 1 beer & wine specials and $1 Select Oysters from 5-7pm on apparently Tuesdays – Sundays.
A Great Gatsby like soundtrack plays in my brain as I escape the heat of Astoria's summer streets and descend the stairs down into this cool, speakeasy like haunt. Tip: quaff a cocktail with a date after a good movie at The Museum of Moving Image… Do it. Live it. Be it.
Fantastic brunch spot. For $27 and all you can drink, it's a pretty good deal. The place is beautiful, the staff is friendly, the food was exceptional: large portions and delicious. The only minor complaint is that the mimosas were weak. Will definitely return.
Been here many times. Great atmosphere, and lots of fun live music. The drinks are great, and the food has always been good. Service tends to be friendly. Definitely a great option for a date if you're in the area.
I was actually going to try s prime house but they were closed for renovation so i found this place and i'm glad i'm did. They have a great and simple menu and is reasonably priced. The service was also good. Attentive but not too attentive if you know what i mean. The food tasted great. Decent size portions too. We will definitely be going back there!
