  1. This was a damn friendly bar to watch some NFL and drink beer.  I got talking to just about every table of people around us as lovely denver and their reserve quaterback very satisfyingly held off the evil patriots.  I shall return.  I may even try the tasty looking fried snacks.

  2. Like the new pup at the dog park, I was greeted with cautious suspicion when I walked into Cody's.  The patrons and workers eyed me, like a collie sniffing a terrier.  Luckily I was wearing my Axe body spray so you know I smelled awesome, and after the cursory circling and sniffing, I was allowed to sit at the bar with nary a growl.

Service was prompt and friendly.  They had a lot of beer on tap but nothing that stood out to me, so I had the Peak Organic IPA.  It was actually very good.  Then I ordered a swiss burger, medium.  Food came quickly so I barely had time to watch the Senators beating up on the Rangers.

The burger looked really small when I first saw it and I was kind of disappointed, but as I commented to a date one time, it may look small but you'll be surprised how delicious and filling it is!*

Overall, this place is a solid 3.5 but I'm rounding down to 3 just because I'd like some better beers.  But the food was good (fries were very tasty), prices were great, the service was very prompt and it seemed like a clean place.  I'd go back.

*This was totally in the context of another hamburger…. what were you thinking?

  3. This was a place I went to based on the fact that it was the highest ranked bar in the area. That, and the juicy burger reviews made it sound like I HAD to go.

I did. I like the setup. It's kinda like someones basement bar opened up to the public. I'd like to come back for a night of drinking. I went here for dinner only.

The burgers are homemade, which is awesome, and the shoelace fries are damn good. However, I thought the homemade burgers were missing something. They were on an ordinary bun, and there wasn't any noticeable sauce or extra oomph that made it tremendous. When I hear about a place for their burgers, I expect something like you'd find at SkinFlint's…but that wasn't the case. It was OK though, it was juicy and thick, just not 5 star. 🙂

The waitstaff is awesome though, they're quick with a drink or the check. I'll definitely come back here to give it another whirl

  4. Lots of tvs you can watch your favorit games, Very cozy place you feel right at home, kinda old fashion mostly locals

  5. The food is solid enough, but nothing particularly special. They have plenty of flatscreens and the NFL package, so chances are you'll be able to watch your game. And they've got completely overpriced pitchers of beer, even if it's shit beer ($18 for Coors Light is not a good deal).

In short, it's a fairly mediocre NYC sports bar. The reasons they earn themselves that fourth star:

    1. The staff is great. The waitress who I feel terrible for because she has to navigate around the packed room and get angry fans beer and fried food…she's awesome. All over everything, attentive and even friendly.

    2. They have pitchers of beer, even if they are overpriced. Less and less common around these parts.

    3. I once witnessed the Bills execute a successful 4th-quarter comeback here. The Bills winning is enough of a surprise, and this was basically a miracle, and until it happens again, I'm assuming it's only because we watched it at Cody's.

Side Note In Case You Were Wondering: I'm actually a Giants fan (although losing 38-0 to the fucking Panthers is almost grounds for giving it up). But my lady friend is a Bills fan, which basically makes me a Bills fan when they aren't playing the Giants. Because she owns me.

  6. Nice bar with a great beer selection on tap. They've got a typical Bar & Grill menu and they do it well. I've only had the chili and sweet potato fries here but both were pretty good. The prices are about average and the people here seem really nice. They have plenty of tables in the back if you're just coming here to eat and plenty of room by the bar if you're coming to watch a game. Just an overall nice neighborhood Bar (& Grill)

  7. I am not sure how to reconcile the completely disparate reviews of this place I've read here, so I will just give an account of my experience.  I went here last night (Thursday) after work for some drinks.  Arrived around 6:30 and the place was pretty dead, save for a few older guys sitting at the bar watching golf on the TV.  (Gulp)  I felt like I had walked into my grandfather's favorite hangout.  It didn't help matters when everyone practically dropped their drinks and the needle skipped off the record while I was being examined.  It was like walking into the twilight zone or something, very bizarre.

However, once they unanimously decided that I was not a threat, a nuisance, or some sort of freak, they were actually quite hospitable.  The bartender asked one of the patrons to move down and make room for me on one of the stools, which was a good look on his part.  He poured a nice stiff drink, and I was off to the races.  The vibe was very laid back and relaxed, I don't recall any music being on, but there were some people in the back of the place with kids, having dinner.  I quickly got the sense that this place was sort of like Cheers, the barkeep seemed to know everyone's name in the place, it was jovial, but generally nondescript otherwise.

My buddy eventually showed up and by that point, the crowd thinned out even more, to the point where we nearly had the entire bar to ourselves.  The group in the back with kids were actually pretty raucous, which is the last thing I expected from this place, but so be it.  The upshot is that this place was relatively quiet and my friend and I were able to have good conversation, unhurried or distracted in any way, and the servers were great.  We had some food too, which was tasty.  I had a French dip sandwich and my friend had the fried chicken.  We were both pleased.

The real kicker for me is that I experienced a NYC phenomenon here that has not happened to me in a long time, and I was beginning to fear that the practice had gone the way of the dodo.  THE BUY-BACK!  We had ordered 3 rounds of drinks, and the bartender gave us the 4th on the house.  Classy move on their part, and it restored my faith in humanity a bit…or at least in my faith that there are still some good barkeeps out there!  If I'm in the area, I would def return to Cody's.

  8. My friends that went to Boston University come to this place to watch BU hockey games since they're one of the few bars in NYC that carry NESN on their tv's. They make an excellent burger and always have affordable beer prices. The waitresses are beyond nice (while firmly entrenched in the 1960's, they are always out to accomodate you). Great neighborhood bar. Just a bit of a walk from the 4 train at Borough Hall, but worth the trek.
