Walt Itgen’s Ice Cream Parlour

“I got the mint chocolate chip which was amazing but the part that changed my perspective of this ice cream store was the HOT FUDGE.”

“simply – the best ice cream parlour on long island and maybe even in the tri-state area!”

“You are better off going to P.J. Harpers or Mitchell's up the block for food, and then coming here for dessert.”

  1. My wife gave this place three stars based on some nostalgia from her child hood. Her family seems to really like the ice cream cakes. I have tried the ice cream cakes and I don't like them at all. The ice cream isn't creamy at all, it just isn't nearly as rich as it should be. If you want a good ice cream cake go to Five Penny's Creamery in Rockville Centre, they are so much better. Honestly, the restaurant just seems dirty and unappealing. If they took the time to clean this place from top to bottom, maybe it would be a nice place? I won't eat here anymore.

  2. Very Delicious ice cream, service was a little slow but clearly they were understaffed so forgivable. Loved the original decor and complete soda fountain!!! In addition to ice cream they have a food menu available. I think I know where friendly's got their establishment ideas from!!! If your in the area and want some yummy homemade ice cream go here.

  3. We went for lunch and mostly because I here's they have homemade ice cream!  Place is cute we all had hamburgers and they were delicious!  Ice cream was also delicious.  Service was okay.  We had a very young waitress which was nice because it shows you that some young people get out there and work.  She tried hard.   Shirley loved the rum raisin ice cream and she is really hard to please.  The mint chip was great and so was the butter crunch!  Prices were fair and I like the old fashioned ice cream parlor atmosphere.

  4. Oh how I love Walt Itgens! I saw this restaurant featured on Restaurant Hunter, and immediately bookmarked this Ice Cream Parlour. I was so happy that I finally got a chance to check this place out because it is SO AWESOME! Imagine walking into an old school restaurant with LOADS OF CANDY. That was my experience today. I saw giant chocolate bunnies for Easter and rock candy! I haven't seen rock candy in a while and I was super excited to see that they had 5 different colors. I wanted to buy them all, but I only bought two lol. What attracts me to this Ice Cream Parlour is that they make their ice cream, fudge and whip cream from SCRATCH! I ordered the Smores Sundae which was loaded with whip cream, hot fudge,  melted marshmallows and vanilla chip ice cream. All I can say Yelpers is GOOD GOOGLY MOOGLY!!! When I tell you that sundae was absolute perfection…I honestly mean that. Their sundaes are a decent size so unless you eat huge portions,  I recommend ordering one to share between two people. Walt Itgens also has a food menu and the prices were very affordable! I ordered a cheeseburger with an onion ring on top and I will say that it tasted amazing. It was the best cheeseburger that I have ever had on Long Island!! It was extremely tasty and had the perfect amount of cheese on a toasted bun. I really wish this place was open 24/7 because my experience was that great, but I will be back without a doubt! You must try out Walt Itgens ASAP lol.

  5. Such a nice cute place. Its like you are back in the 50's. I love eating here. Great and friendly service. prices are good, the ice cream is what they are known for, but i actually prefer Mitchell's ice cream up the block.  In any case, the place is still nice if you want some comfort food around good people.

  6. I love Walt Itgen's ice cream parlour! Although, it's more like an old school luncheonette. When you walk in it's like stepping into a time capsule. There are so few of these places around anymore it's sad.

A great place to come for both breakfast and lunch. They make a kick ass B.L.T. and of course homemade ice cream in a veriety of different flavors.

One quick note about the ice cream. If ordered to go they do not have lids. Instead they throw some wax paper on top and put a rubber band around it (haha so old school). This is fine except for in the summer time when it seems to quickly melt all over the car. Stick to eating it there instead.

  7. After dinner in Oceanside on Monday night, my girlfriend and I were lookin' for some dessert (belated birthday treat for her) and landed on Itgen's. I had been here once previously many moons ago and enjoyed the large sundae I consumed (back then it might've gotten a four star review). This past experience was more of a three. Let me elaborate.

I do like the look of Itgen's as you're transported to an old school ice cream parlor complete with counter top space and a nice list of homemade frozen choices. Service, despite the place being  empty, seemed a bit lackluster as the waitress acted/looked ready to bolt when the closing hour was up. That and the rest of the employees (possibly the owner in the back?) brought down the nostalgic feel. Luckily, ice cream can remedy some (but not all) bad vibes. I ordered one scoop of chocolate peanut butter and my girlfriend went with java (topped with caramel and chocolate sprinkles). Mine was rich in flavor with a good balance between chocolate and PB. I did really enjoy it and price-wise it was worth the greenery I produced from my wallet.

Overall, Itgen's is a quality stop for ice cream, but I can't shake the feeling I had from staff the other night. I might come back in the future, but for now I'll continue ice cream adventures elsewhere on the isle.

  8. Here's the thing about this place…

It's old and vintage which means that people are either going to love it or hate it. Me? I fall into the love it category. This establishment has been around for more than half a century. The decor is reminiscent of a location your grandparents probably went on a date to. True, some parts desperately need some remodeling, but its a nice cozy atmosphere.

The food is comfort food. If you want healthier options, go ahead and find somewhere else. But there are items here that are to die for. The waffle is a very underrated piece of deliciousness. Flaky, crispy, light, and sweet, it goes best with their sausage patties and good ole maple syrup. One of the best items on the menu is their corned beef that is usually made on Thursdays, where their Reubens are the best you will ever have.

I also love this place because of the drinks. They make old fashioned sodas where the flavors are mixed together. Try the Cooling Gorilla for the hell of it. They use U-Bet Chocolate Syrup which makes some of the best milkshakes, chocolate milk, and egg creams! The other important part is their own ice cream and especially their homemade hot fudge, which is why my mom gets hot fudge sundays every time we go. The prices are also dirt cheap. Itgens is an icon.
