Murphy’s Law

“The hospital bar, this is the 1st bar you encounter heading west on 70th St. Upon entering you walk in to the pub, a long wood bar with tables that surround it.”

“Best corned beef and cabbage ever for me and wife polished off an original Shepards pie.”

“Non-happy hour prices are about $6.50 wells, and I wouldn't know about much else because I don't order anything else.”

  1. Ok. Review update time! Despite my first bad experience I gave Murphy's another chance. Have been coming here regularly for the last 6 months to play darts, finish up the night, and bullshit with the bartender… who turned out to be a pretty cool dude. Its a low key place and the people I have met here are preeeeetty interesting (organic chemist??? yahhhh!) And the pretzels sticks are bomb.

  2. "Standard Lunch Spot"

Typically, the people that frequent this place are employees of the hospital, patients/visitors and construction workers. Murphy's Law is has decent bar food with quick and reliable service. Also, the restaurant has a midrange beer list to take the edge off of whatever may ill you. I would recommend the chicken salad wrap, the burgers (the fries are pretty good) and the french onion soup. However, the Murphy's has different daily entree and soup specials, so you can think outside of the box for your culinary delights. Personally, I like the crab-meat stuffed tilapia. I think that it is frozen seafood but I do not come here for amazing seafood, so it all good for me.

The food is not the greatest in the UES but it gets the job done. Plus, you can just have 4-8 beers or cocktails to make feel better if the food is not up to your standards.

  3. Came in for drinks and appetizers with two others. The atmosphere was nice. The bar area was crowded so we got a table in the back. There is surprisingly a lot of room back there. I was disappointed in their beer selection. There were all the usual domestic brews but not too much else to offer. I settled for a blue moon and they were out.

The food is pretty good. We ordered the calamari, the Cajun shrimp and nachos. The shrimp are huge and have a great flavor to them. The calamari was nicely breaded and had a good sauce drizzled on it. I'm not sure what it was but it was citrusy. The nachos were alright all the toppings were on top and stuck in the cheese so after you got through the top layer it was just chips.

I would come here again for a quick beer. It is not a very memorable experience but it has pretty good food, friendly staff and is not very expensive.

  4. Great pub for casual comfort food dinner.  Kid and family friendly.

We were walking around looking for a place to have casual comfort food that would make both me and my picky son happy … and stumbled upon murphys.

Walked in and assessed : is this kid / family friendly or just a happy hour drinking bar … Walking beyond the bar there is ample seating and a cute cozy little area by the kitchen, in the back, with charming painted walls – not pub or bar feeling … perfect.

The server was a sweet enthusiastic and accommodating Irish gal straight from Ireland two weeks before. Any question I asked she took back to the kitchen to ask- which I heard her asking w enthusiasm and sincerity – was very cute.

After the many questions we had:

    – Chili- fabulous Both my picky son and I liked
    – Mussels, beer dressing – delic. I was apprehensive getting a seafood dish from a pub but the mussels were fresh tasting, plump and the beer dressing was great, sweet
    – corned beef platter with potatoes  – my very picky son loved it and I tried – very good
    – shepards pie . Very good. I am a shepards pie snob and am usually more likely to be disappointed than not but theirs did not disappoint.

I asked for an after dinner licq and the server asked the bartender – came back with a list of recommendations – so sweet – and gave a sampling …

My son semi passed out at the table from carb overload as I finished the frangelica  … Happy and full. Thrilled as any mom who sees their picky kid eat incredibly well.

My experience here was beyond the pub happy hour and I would definitely recommend having a casual comfort food dinner here – head past the bar area to the back; leave satisfied, full comfort food happy.

  5. I wasn't terribly impressed by this place. We were there at like 9 on a Friday and the place was almost empty. The drinks are expensive and they only have a B rating. I probably wouldn't have even stayed if I wasn't with friends who wanted to stay there and I almost definitely won't be back. They do have a decent beer selection though.

  6. This is a solid choice if you're in the neighborhood. I got the rueben and was really happy with it. It seemed like a pretty legit NYC deli sandwich. My doctor and his office staff raved about the burgers and the margaritas. Seems like they've got a good happy hour deal, too. It gets super packed and loud on game nights.

  7. Good local bar.  You could call it cozy or just small.  Beers on tap – Sams IPA, Sams seasonal, Guinness, Coors, Harp. Bartender was amiable, professional.

I had a pretty good Fish & Chips tonight.   Food came out of the kitchen fast.

I don't recall any background music.  Just a few loud customers at the end of the bar.

OK if you are local.  A solid three stars.

  8. While I generally hope Murphy's Law doesn't apply during my shift ;p , this joint is a pretty decent place for hospital workers to grab a drink after work. Guinness not included in the happy hour specials? Sad-face. But they offer a discount for any health care workers, so I can't be too mad. I was slightly surprised that Murphy's wasn't packed during happy hour on a Friday, it WAS raining. You've got decent bar food and drinks, but if you're schlepping it here from out of the area, you've probably got a different agenda in mind (cough* possibly meeting a cute doctor/nurse* cough). I'll be back, duh.
