Playwright Tavern & Restaurant
“They have an upstairs restaurant that has a very light atmosphere and feels miles away from the craziness that can be Times Square.”
“We were walking around for a "non-tourist-trap" bar when we saw the chalkboard sign out front publicizes $3 cans of beer for happy hour.”
“The bill was a lot cheaper than what I had expected due to the fact we were in the theater district.”

Times Square bar that does not feel like a touristy Times Square bar.
Good quick bartenders. Typical bar food. And cold beer.
This is your typical midtown pub. Three floors (maybe more?), if you want drinks only, head to the second floor since the ground level is for people eating dinner.
We ended up getting apps with our drinks. The calamari was crunchy, wings were good, chicken fingers were delicious. Also, those plates are huge. Between the three of us, it was basically a dinner.
Service was attentive but average. Water glasses were kept full so that's nice. They have wet naps, so ask for them if you're getting wings since they don't just give them to you.
Pretty crowded on a Saturday night for dinner. We went to the bar while we waited to be seated and the owner came up, introduced himself, chatted a bit and offered to buy us a round of drinks, I thought that was very nice and generous! I tried a honey whiskey drink from their cocktail menu, which was good followed by their tomato basil soup and turkey dinner from a daily menu, both were delicious!
The very upstairs dining room was chilly but besides that it was a good dinner, lots of tasty sounding options on the menu.
Nice bar, great for happy hour.
Draft beer is $5 during happy hour and they have a good selection of bar food.
During happy hour, this is a good place, but I wouldn't stay for a long time because it gets crowded very quickly and there isn't very !much space. There are few tables for groups and there isn't much standing room
Other than the space issue, this place will offer you a great experience.
Stopped in here to kill some time with my son before catching 'Curious Incident' on Broadway. Was the night before St. Patrick's Day so it was crowded. Service was slow and we stuck to the bar food, chicken fingers, etc. Busy and noisy, bit of an older crowd. No problems, but not special.
Came here needing a bite to eat before a movie. Saw they had a happy hour and I thought – perfect! Hmmmm well I was only half wrong. Beers are cheap , relatively, at 5 per pint. They offer only standard beers at that price though. So I got a blue moon. Apps- least expensive is 7 dollars for waffle fries! Got the small chicken fingers for 9 bucks… Guess I got sucked in by their marketing! I know it's Times Square, but their happy hour is not making me very happy. Best for just drinks.
I would say pretty much your standard typical Irish pub I do like the particular arrangement of this one however. The waitresses were nice, friendly, and quick with service and they had an amazing happy hour deal during the Tuesday afternoon that I stopped in for a drink.
It's not too far from Times Square and I would say if you're in the area come in and try this place as they have a variety of drinks for one to try. However it's nothing special and it's kind of small. Maybe my experience wasn't memorable but nothing stood out to me for me to come back.
I will first start by saying that I would never eat around Times Square intentionally, but shit happens. In the case that shit is happening to you, this pub isn't all too bad…I'd venture to even say good.
We were seated immediately during peak lunch hour on a holiday weekend–right away major points for offering us food with under an hour wait time. The menu is standard bar fare so we ordered just that…wings and burgers. We were all very impressed by the crispiness and flavor of the wings (nice heat to sweet ratio), and our burgers were properly cooked and well seasoned. The waitstaff went out of their way to rush our orders knowing we had very little time before catching a nearby show.
While I wouldn't plan to dine here in advance if you're in a pinch pursuing Yelp you'll have a solid meal!
