Service was FAST even though it was very busy. Our waiter was extremely well versed on the history of Coney Island, the beers of Coney and just a great informative local! Each of us had a wrap with a side of fries and man, was it ALOT of food.
I have the Tom's Wrap, add bacon, with a side of ranch and honey mustard – SO GOOD! Also tried the vanilla egg crepe drink… It was like a milkshake made of clouds.
** if you're of age, try the Coney Island Hard Root Beer – THE BEST BEER !!!
Also the rooftop is an awesome place to eat, drink, and people watch without being in the crowd 😉
We stopped for breakfast here after enjoying a stroll on the boardwalk. It's located right on the boardwalk and offers indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a roof. If you sit outside as we did, you can take in views of the beach and people walking on the boardwalk. We also were able to have our dog with us (tied to the other side of the patio seating area).
The service here is the main reason I dropped two stars. It's a top notch location with food that we found to be pretty good. I tried the veggie omelet and my partner had the breakfast combo. Everything was tasty and freshly made and the pancakes were outstanding (a must try!!). The service was painstakingly slow and confusing. The sign asks you to wait to be seated and after waiting for 8 minutes (with staff clearly seeing us and not engaging) we opted to seat ourself. Many possible patrons who arrived after us either did the same or flat out left to eat elsewhere after being ignored. Our order was thankfully taken promptly but then we were brought some food that clearly had been sent back by another guest on the patio (literally watched them bring the food back and forth). I indicated that while this was close to what I ordered it was not my order. They then took it away and a while later we got our actual order. We had to ask a few times for condiments (ketchup and syrup). The staff was nice enough but seem to be young and not clear on each persons role. They would benefit from some guidance from the management on how to divide up responsibilities and ensure the patrons are being attended to.
That being said, given the location and food quality, we would probably come back and be prepared to aggressively court our server for anything we would need!
An American diner that sits on a boardwalk with mediocre service and "fair to middlin" food quality. After walking almost one mile stretch on Coney Island's boardwalk, party of two came to Tom's for lunch. Table service restaurant on Coney Island boardwalk is starting to grow aside from Peggy O'Neil. Table service is notoriously slow as the staff appears high school students or too apathetic to care when distributing our utensils in piece mail- one setting at a time. Outdoor seating is available and a rooftop lounge.
For Him:
Cheese burger with Fries $13.00- not juicy but somewhat dry
For Her:
Chicken Caesar wrap with Fries $15.00- very bland and dry with lettuce that is browning. Not fresh.
I came here for a quick bite to eat while on the boardwalk. The service was pretty good. I didn't expect the food to be good, to be honest, but it was. I had a wrap with chicken, cheddar, tomatoes, lettuce and spicy mayo. It came with fries. I enjoyed it. My friends had a quesadilla and they liked it as well. This place is a good place to stop on the boardwalk for a burger or a wrap, with waiter service.
If you like cold, barely cooked food, $15 dollar watered down drinks with TONS of sugar & terrible music (that the young waiters play on the rooftop from their Pandora station on their cell phones) then you will love Toms Coney Island.
I came here last summer and enjoyed the rooftop (probably because I pregamed on the Q train on my way here so I didn't know any better) but it has gone SO downhill since then…
THE FOOD IS OVERPRICED AND STRAIGHT UP GROSS! At $15 dollars for a wrap and French fries I was hoping for something edible. I ordered the Toms wrap which was grilled chicken, lettuce, tomato and chipotle sauce. Nothing special but their menu isn't the greatest. The chicken was dry, I had to drench the wrap in ranch for flavor. The fries were soggy and old and I ordered them WELL DONE.. I ordered a Miami Vice for $10. It was watered down and sooo much sugar I could barely drink it. The waiters on the rooftop are all young 16 year old looking kids who take your order and then sit behind the bar, text on their phones, and play garbage music from their phones that play through the speakers on the rooftop. Couldn't even get their attention for some napkins..
Long story short just skip this spot all together. It's not worth the $. Go to Nathan's next door and get a 5 dollar hotdog or hamburger grilled right in front of ya. Or walk about 1/2 a mile on the boardwalk to Brighton beach where there's classy restaurants with GOOD FOOD!
Good views from the rooftop… if you can get in. Lots of reserved tables up there, but they're empty! For the hour or two we were on there, no one was sitting at these reserved tables. Great…
Had a cheese quesadilla + fries and a frozen margarita and a margarita on the rocks. Very small portions for $10 drinks. The cheese quesadilla + fries were so-so. Nothing special.
I took my friend who grew up on the Jersey shore to Coney Island for the first time and she wanted an ocean/beachfront eatery so I yelped and this seemed to be reviewed well.
We wanted an ice cold cocktail so we had frozen Margarita's. I was shocked how good it was!
I was in the mood for a cheese burger and again I was pleased with the flavor and that it was not a frozen patty type. It was a thick meaty burger! The fries were not good. They had a coating and most were soggy.
The server was attentive but presumptuous which became annoying.
Overall pleased and enjoyed the outdoor eating.
So the weather is warming up again and once again, I make my annual late spring/all summer long pilgrimage to the beach. Tom's of Coney Island is located right on the boardwalk. This place gets insanely crowded especially during the summer months, with drunk people spilling out all over the 2 mile stretch of boardwalk shouting at each other in Brooklynese.
I came here again and decided to order breakfast. I had the Eggs Benedict. I have to say, this time I came was much better than last time. They must have hired a new cook, because the two eggs were nicely poached with the yolks still warm and runny inside. I also liked the potatoes that this dish came with. I also ordered a side of two scrambled eggs, because again I'm an egg addict 🙂
Since it was so unusually warm (80 degrees in April!) I once again wanted to indulge in something tropical. I ordered a Piña Colada. About 3 minutes late a giant glass was delivered to my table. However, it wasn't really the best Piña Colada I've had. It was a bit too frozen, and it also came out totally plain, with nothing to decorate it. Gimme the whipped cream, the pineapple, the marschino cherry, and those goofy little umbrellas!
