Solid gastropub, and I think the neighborhood was really in need of a good one.
Came for drinks a a few weeks ago, and came back for dinner. The food was very good – we ordered the pulled pork sliders, burrata salad, and mac and cheese – the mac was the clear winner of the three, absolutely fantastic.
I highly recommend the Gold Rush cocktail, but there are some other great choices too – I'm just a huge fan of whiskey/bourbon cocktails in general.
I felt the food was a bit on the pricier side, especially the entrees. But the portions were pretty generous, especially the Mac and Cheese!!
Definitely a great place for a solid cocktail or brew, to share some apps and catch up with good friends!
One of the only places with the kitchen open late! We had a pretty late dinner and were thankful their kitchen was still open.
Portions are ginormous as well! The mac and cheese is heavenly. I also got their grilled salmon. That came with a whole bunch of mashed potatoes under the fish along with a generous amount of vegetables (snow peas, bell peppers, mushrooms). The deviled eggs were good as well. It has a spicy kick to it since it has buffalo sauce on it.
Quite a lot of variety and options for bar food so I would recommend this place for a quick bite/ drinks
Had a great brunch here. The "Eggs Benny" were delicious – poached eggs, avocado, crispy polenta, beans, and chipotle sauce – yum! The Bloody Mary's are garnished with beef jerky, and the beer list is large. The vibe is fun and young.
It can get a bit noisy/rowdy, but the back of the restaurant is a lot quieter. Brunch entrees were ~$16.
It is with great sadness for the rampaging gluttony of yore that I admit I have become a Salad Lady. Did I feel a slight twinge of shame when everyone else at my table ordered something a little heftier than HandCraft's mighty kale salad? Yes. Did I stare enviously at my friend's side order of fries as I stuffed as much foliage into my mouth as dignity would allow? Sure. Did licking the whole plate clean still leave me with a desire to raid the nearby street festival for all the grilled meats and deep fried dough? Absolutely. But it was nice to walk back 60-something blocks (thanks, MTA, for making all the local trains run express) without feeling a puddle of grease slosh around in my belly.
How does this kale salad stack up against all the other kale salads in the world? Well, for one, points for giving me a TON of greens. I tasted a lot of carrot and manchego, but not sure about the roasted corn that was mentioned in the description. If you're a stickler for certain grains, this one has freekeh (which I had to surreptitiously look up) instead of the usual quinoa (can't believe I typed out that sentence).
HandCraft was a bit of a ghost town on this MDW Sunday – I can see the restaurant getting extremely crowded on Thursday-Saturday nights and Sunday brunches, especially in a not-so-happening part of Murray Hill. I would have appreciated someone coming by of their own accord instead of having to flag down our waitress (who, indubitably, was a sweetheart) and check up on us to see if we were ready to order. Not too bothered about it, but just something to keep in mind.
NEXT TIME: buffalo deviled eggs, the kale salad again
Some of my colleagues and I stopped here after attending an educational conference. We were in the mood for small plates and drinks and HandCraft looked like the perfect spot.
I like the look of HandCraft a lot – it's open and casual with music playing, TV screens, and an overall relaxed atmosphere. I tried two of their cocktails – the Gold Rush and the Strawberry Ledge (I think that's what it's called…at least strawberry something) – both were good, kind of on the strong side (though my tolerance is low you can't go by me).
We shared three apps – the crab & artichoke dip, buffalo deviled eggs, and truffle tots. I'm not a fan of deviled eggs so I passed on those – the tots were okay, kind of like the ones you buy frozen at the grocery store but elevated with truffles and shredded cheese. The dip was great – creamy with chunks of crab and corn chips which could sustain the weight of the dip.
They advertise their food as "New American Comfort Food" – while I can't attest to that with just three apps, I can say that what I did have was good. That, combined with their cocktails, friendly staff, and setting make this a place I would definitely return to.
Great gastropub in Kips Bay.
I came here not too long ago with a couple of friends for dinner and drinks on a Saturday night. We were all first-timers and decided to check it out thanks to the positive reviews on Yelp. Overall, we really enjoyed our experience.
The space within the restaurant is large, including a bar and table seating in the front with additional seating towards the back. The décor is cool, featuring a lot of reclaimed brick and wood, and promotes a casual/divey ambience. Service was good, as our waiter was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was pretty relaxed while we ate dinner, and it became more upbeat as the night went on.
The drink menu was expansive. Draught beers focused on local NY breweries so I ordered Radiant Pig's Gangster Duck (a tasteful red ale), and the bartender gave me a solid pour. Their bottled, canned, and cider beer selection included a variety of brewers throughout the United States as well as other countries. They also have a large cocktail menu for the liquor enthusiasts.
The food was very good. I thought the truffle tots and Louisiana gumbo were delicious, and others in my group praised the pulled pork sliders, jerk wings, and bison burger. While we ordered starters and sandwiches, the restaurant's menu also has entrées. The wild game meatloaf sounded awesome, but I'll defer to those who have actually tried it.
I definitely recommend checking it out. I'll be sure to swing by again the next time I'm in the neighborhood!
I was expecting a real cocktail lounge based on the summary but it turned out to be a restaurant with OK cocktails. Their cocktail list makes several attempts at portraying a mixology theme, but they miss the mark.
The cheese plate and crispy Brussels sprouts are excellent. I would pass on the deviled eggs.
One night, 4 friends were looking for a place to have wine and good food after work. Thanks to Yelp, they came across with Handcraft Kitchen and lived happily ever after 🙂
We ordered holy artichoke dip, amazing! We loved the presentation and taste. Cheese plate did not have the ones I love, mostly aromatic cheeses like blue cheese. Jam was yummy 🙂 We also got an order of their "Handcraft Hanger Steak". WOW! Out of this world! Both sides were delicious, mashed potato and the sautéed leaves, meat cooked medium-well as we asked. We killed 2 bottles of wine thanks to nice atmosphere, friendly service besides all above mentioned yummy food.
Desserts. Yes I have few words on them too 🙂 Vanilla Panna Cotta and Fudge Brownie. $9 each. Brownie was something! Definitely save space for it. Panna cotta also o light and fresh.
2 bottles wine, cheese plate, artichoke, steak, a beer and 2 desserts, $190. Will go back as soon as we can 🙂
