I was a little skeptical of a $20 sandwich box, but this is honestly a lot of food and its all good. Rocket Pig only makes one sandwich, you can order a la carte or get the $20 Pignic box. In the box you get a huge and excellent pickle, a bag of chips (good options, not lays), cole slaw (only pretty good), a soda (Root Beer, Ginger Beer, etc), a dessert, and the full sandwich. The desserts are excellent, all cookies or brownies. The sandwich is the reason to come here though. I'm trying really hard and can only think of two pork sandwiches I've had that were better than this (both were porchetta). Rocket Pig's take is also of European inspiration and comes on a perfectly chewy ciabatta roll.
This may very well be the best sandwich I've ever had, and it also might be the best sandwich in the world. Which sandwich? Their regular sandwich, they have one. It's unreal.
I think my perfect day would involve eating this sandwich.
If you haven't tried it, I'm so sorry. Please do so soon for your own sake.
UH-MAZ-ING. This was such a surprise. I actually went into the sister restaurant at the front, but don't be fooled. This place is predominantly a take-out place located on the side-street. There is a rusty (intentional) door, with a small outdoor standing area.
Inside is a tiny little space that sells amazing pork sandwiches. It's apparently a secret family recipe. I'd recommend the large for sure. But even more, get the Pignic Box. It's $20 for a collection of their items, all delicious.
Pignic Box:
1. Pork sandwich: MY GOD this was heaven on earth. It's fatty, but it's probably the most flavorful pork I've had to date. I think if you're in NY, you should come here.
2. Pickle: Home made fresh, crispy.
3. Cole slaw: Not your average mayonnaise infused monstrosity. This is amazingly fresh and also pickled. I loved it.
4. Drink: Comes with the box. They have interesting options like "ginger beer."
5. Desserts: I tried the chocolate mousse cookie and brownie. Both were awesome. I'd get the mousse cookie given it's quite unique! You'll be surprised at the crispy thin wafers and the mousse inside. It's made beautifully. You get 3 of them.
The service is excellent. Pricing is reasonable. You will love it.
Yeah, it's that good. This place only does one thing and it does it perfectly. What do you get when you comer here? You get a pork sandwich on a soft, flakey, buttery, ciabatta smothered with red onion jam and a mustard sauce. Tangy hot sauce is served on the side, with a pickle and a wet nap. Two sizes are available for the hungry or the hungrier diner, and so are chips, drinks and beer/cider (to stay). I picked up the bigger sandwich and bag of chips and it ran me almost 20 bucks. While the price is sort of a bummer, it's worth it. I took my sandwich back to work and disappeared into a dark corner of my work place to devour my sandwich. The meat was soft, juicy, well seasoned and you can taste the quality of the bread. I found it odd that they didn't cut my sandwich and the big chunks of meat made it a little unwieldy to eat; but I didn't mind picking up chunks of meet with my hands, dipping it in the hot sauce and licking the remnants from my fingers. Definitely worth checking out!
One of the best sandwiches in NYC without a doubt. I'd recommend getting the small unless you are absolutely starving as the large is tough for one person to finish. The quality of the pork and the sauce is perfect, this is def a place worth going out of your way to try. Not the easiest place to find as its tucked right off 10th avenue but worth the effort.
I just like saying it. Rocket Pig.
Rocket..PIG!!!!
Walking up to this place is a little tricky. I see people eating in a nice looking garden. My first reaction? Man, these folks are way too clean to be eating Rocket Pig. (Rocket Pig)
I walk into this tiny tiny space. I see the counterperson and ask him do I order first and then eat over there? He said, yeah grab a table. Great! I walk into the garden party and ask for a menu. The menu doesn't reflect Rocket Pig. (Rocket Pig) The waiter comes over and I said this isn't a BBQ menu, what gives? Oh you want to eat at Rocket Pig (Rocket Pig) You have to order from the counter. I walk back inside and said Dude, what the heck? He said YOU SAID you wanted, I stopped him. I'm hungry and I want to order food from Rocket Pig (Rocket Pig), where do I eat? Oh this place is either to go or stand outside by our small table shelf. I ate MREs, I can stand to eat Rocket Pig (Rocket Pig)
I ordered the Pignic Box! It comes in a cool, carry box. Lets break it down:
– Pork sammy: That's a migh-t-fine cooked pork sammy. Served on a nice big ciabatta bun, they slathered it with caramelized onions. This was a juicy, porky sandwich. The cole slaw was served in a separate container, it had a vinegary taste that cut the fatty BBQ meat. It worked well together.
The drink choices were limited, Sprite, diet Coke and Pellegrino Limonite, I chose the sparkling Limonite.
North Fork chips – BBQ or Sweet Potato. I chose SP
Finally desserts. I was so looking forward to the bacon caramel, sold out. As a matter of fact, the counter person said I had the last Ciabatta bun?? I'm assuming this place gets hit hard during lunch time so plan accordingly. For my dessert I chose the brownie. I just got home and saved this sucka to split with my wife.
OMG! This brownie was sooooooo good!
I'm a total fan of Rocket Pig (Rocket Pig) If you want to come for lunch, come early!
Wow………. this place blew a rocket into my tastebuds. It was simply amazing. There is a restaurant (sit down) adjacent – but this review is for the to-go fast food shanty connected to it.
You don't really expect much, the place is almost hidden. You open the door and it's literally just a counter. You look at the menu and there is only one item on the menu. The rocket pig sandwich aka pork sandwich. You can choose a smaller size or a big size and pair it up with a combo if you want drinks/chips/coleslaw etc. Now.. I wasn't hungry but hey when has that stopped me from eating. I went with the small and I'd say it was decent size. If I was hungry though.. small would've been a bad choice.
The pork sandwich here is NOT pulled pork. For some reason when I hear pork and sandwich I automatically assume it's pulled pork. I personally am.. neutral on pulled pork sandwiches. On one hand they're okay on the other it's sort of a dry sauce filled sandwich. Anyways Rocket Pig sandwich is not that. They take this giant slab of pork and they cut these thick slices with juicy fat all over it. The bread is almost like a ciabatta type but not really but who cares it's amazing. It's then topped off with juicy onions and some sort of sauce. The result? One of the best sandwiches I have ever eaten. EVER. Thick slices of fatty juicy pork come on nowwwwwwwww that's not even fair. Onions added great flavor, wasn't overpowering.
You can eat standing inside since there's a little table shelf you can put your food on or right outside (same thing standing shelf). The casual nature of this dining experience just made it better.
I am adding this to my gotta eat every time I'm in New York now. Till next time Rocket Pig.. till next time.
I honestly don't know if I've had a better pork sandwich… Two days, four sandwiches. I'll just leave it at that.
