Pretty fun place to pre-game before a Cyclones game. When I was there, they had a nice band playing and they had plenty of beer. A lot of it was of the Bud Light/Coors variety, but hey, it's a fun place to hang out.
The locals who inhabit the place were plenty friendly to me. The bathrooms were not nearly as awful as I imagined they might be.
You'll likely have an enjoyable time if you come here.
Having recently been to Peggy's, I decided my last review isn't entirely fair, because I had a blast here with people before and after a Cyclones game.
Perhaps it was the live music outside before heading to the game. Perhaps it was the live music inside after the game. Both instances, the bands were fun. Perhaps it was the 32 ounces of beer for 5 bucks, or perhaps it was the several times the barmaid provided me with a buyback brew.
We were able to secure a table both times, and overall the crowd was pretty good, as we weren't crushed by it. For outdoor summer drinking, this isn't a bad place. It's good for drinking lots of cheap beer, so I figured Peggy's deserved more love than I showed before.
Independence Day 2012 brings my holiday travels to be engrossed in a piece of American culture.
In hopes of edible food, Peggy O'Neill's presents disappoint MEH for an Irish Pub. Pub grub consists of your typical Chicken Caesar, Potato Skins, burgers, blah… blah. With a friend one BBQ, crispy onions at $12.95 and a platter of crab cakes at $11.00 with Coke Cola totals a near $30.00. Edible but not worth the claim of gourmet quality, but certainly a step above McDonald's level. There goes my cholesterol level as I ended up wearing greasy BBQ sauce all over my hands and mouth. Burgers have a choice to be serve on Focaccia Bread or regular burger buns, but I like Focaccia Bread reminiscing my visit to Melbourne, Australia where it is a staple. The burger was average, albeit not juicy nor flavorful. Outdoor bands and DJ's are available, weather pending, as well as outdoor seating. The atmospheric conditions appear in a state of disrepair for a grave structural decline. There is no business card nor takeout menu for distribution to patrons.
Low and behold it was stifling HOT!! The air conditioning proven extremely weak and near inoperable. The outdoor thick heat invisible fog is now INSIDE Peggy O'Neill's, yes it was that oppressive hot. Facilities are the most vile and foulest eye sore with vulgar stench backed by paper towels overflowing the rubbish bins and stalls are extremely wet and slippery. Peggy O'Neill, woman, patrons are curtailed of basic amenities as there are NO toilet paper and no paper towels. Customer service is inattentive as my party of two had to hail the wait staff multiple times for simple requests. No comment on alcoholic drinks as I did not imbibed any by choice. The bar area appears to resonate a rowdy crowd for sports watching or informal hangout spot.
Note: The roof of Peggy O'Neill's is part of MCU Park (formerly KeySpan Park) home to Brooklyn Cyclones, a minor league baseball team which is visible for the banner and circular neon night lights above the facade signage.
Peggy O'Neils kind of sucks, but that doesn't mean I don't end up here at least once a year. Since its off the boardwalk it is only around $5 a beer. I remember a fun night here when there was a cover band (or was it Karaoke?) either way there was a lot of singing to Journey going on here. Last time I was here someone went to town with 70s disco on the jukebow-what a jerk!
In the summer it's nice to sit outside, but I don't see much of a point of going to a bar near the beach, where I can't even see the beach.
Another place on coney island that may be jumping in the summer or during the cyclone games is here.
I ended up here with a gang of co-workers on a Friday for some unwinding time. Decent bar fare…sliders, mozzarella sticks, fries, and other platters were being had. Fry it and it will be eaten. The happy hour special was good…under $7 mostly, can't beat that. The staff person assigned to our monstrous sized group was nice and kept things coming.
The low rating is for the look of the place. They need a makeover asap. It looks like they just gave up and said we'll make it look good later. There was one area with stacked tables in a corner and chairs around haphazardly….but why?? Yes, it's a bar but people want to be in a nice looking environment. Or at least I do… no amount of happy hour drinks could make me overlook the decor.
My best friend and I had decided to down to Coney Island for the annual Mermaid Parade. Now, if you know me, you will understand how this weirdness is right up our alley. If you don't know me, just know that my best friend and I were *not* dressed as mermaids, but we were in "theme" and was uber cute and spent the entire freezing and wet day in cute halter top outfits…and not feeling the chill because we were so admired. Yes, we're attention hounds…at least we're honest about it.
Anyways.
For this visit, there were a couple of friends that I've been meaning to meet, but never had the opportunity, due to an odd confluence of destiny. However, on this visit, as it seemed that fate was – yet once again – going to keep us apart…one of the girls I was with, had the bright idea to go to a bar. Now, I never say "no" to a bar visit…so I quickly text my long-yet-unseen friends and had them meet up with us at Peggy O'Neill's.
There were several things going for Peggy O'Neill's. For starters, they had a nice outdoor patio area with grills going (I'm sure it was because of the Mermaid Parade…but the hot-dogs and burgers were just what we needed!). Inside, there is a large bar to the left – which is where I made a beeline to, and to the right a large seating area with stage. Obviously, during nice weather, this place has the potential to be a great hangout bar, with plenty of room and live music.
Perhaps it was just me, but I had mixed feelings about the bar. I place an order for our party – and the bartender was obviously tired and overwhelmed – although when we first arrived, the bar was not that busy. Regardless, one of the orders was for the Blue Moon (which was on tap). The bartender blurted out something – and after getting her to repeat it four times, we finally realize that she's saying that they are out. Uhhh…it's not that hard to say "we're out". Not sure what the mumbling was all about. Also, there was a lot of dramatic sighing and impatient attitude…however, when my friend (who wanted the Blue Moon) changed her order to something else – she didn't charge us for it, which was a very nice gesture.
We weren't here too long (or perhaps we were – but it felt like a mere instant), but the vibe was definitely fun, despite the weird vibes from the bar. The folks that were streaming in where fun, friendly and made the day a touch surreal…but as that's how I tend to like my days to be, it worked out just fine. The next time I'm back at Coney, I may stop in Peggy's to see how it is when it's not a crazy special event weekend. I hope that the potential I sense in this place doesn't let me down.
