  1. I like my red wine & I like my horses. Simple.

The large scale sketches decorating the walls caught my eye every time I walked past it. The bar tenders have always been friendly, attentive but relaxed. I like this place. Its not too dim on lighting which is sometimes a nice change, it looks and feels clean! I have not tried the food, yet!!

  2. On Wednesdays I like to venture into the city a few hours early to give myself some down time and a chance to grab a little something before my 6pm class.  I've been here twice now, within a month period, and had issues with my food on both occasions.

On my first visit, I arrived around 4:45pm. They relayed that their regular food menu isn't available until 5:30. I quickly ordered the flatbread, knowing that I had limited time. The women sitting directly next to me chimed in, "One for us too please!" and the bartender proceeded to put them in. Over 30 minutes later their food arrives, and mine is nowhere to be seen. I've worked in restaurants before and I have a hard time believing that they aren't making an identical item like that simultaneously as it literally uses the same ingredients. Or maybe the bartender forgot to put one in, but I don't suspect that was the case here. In the end, I ended up having to pack my flatbread into a box and eat it messily as I walked to class, which I was 5min late for because my *flatbread* took so long..

I decided to give this place another shot last week. I showed up at 4:30 – with more than an hour to eat/drink – I again ordered the flatbread and about 5 minutes later I ordered the pork sliders. They took so long that I ended up walking out of there with no pork sliders, and both items taken off my check because the sliders were nowhere to be found. Hmm. I get that kitchens aren't perfect, but for the exact same issue to happen to me twice in a row here is a problem.

I'll also note that the bar service isn't as attentive as it should be. I have to really work to gain eye contact or flag someone down when my glass is empty or I'm ready to order or I have questions. They're friendly but a little spacey.

And for those who picked this place out because their Yelp page misleadingly labels themselves as a wine bar – note that they have 3 whites, one rose, and 3 reds by the glass. Granted, they're all pretty unique and well chosen selections but still – I consider this more of a whiskey bar than wine bar.

All in all I think they have some kinks to work through, maybe I'll give this place another shot in like a year.

  3. Maysville was really good, but way more expensive than its (now closed) Brooklyn counterpart Char No 4. We had some delicious fried oysters but of course portions were very small. I liked that since they knew we were sharing the steak they divided it into two plates for us. It was cooked and prepared very well. We splurged on two desserts and both were delicious, one of which was an apple tart.
The space is a decent size and the high ceilings make it feel quite open.
    Great drink and whisky list.

  4. I feel like I was just discovered a secret that everyone has been hiding from me.

It's Wed night, 8:30 pm. I had just woken up from a 2-hour nap. A friend flew into town last minute and we decide to meet up at Eataly for dinner and drinks – my go to spot. By the time we get there and to my dismay, last-call was at 10pm. We quickly whip out our phones to YELP something good nearby as we were both starving and dying for a DRANK!

Maysville showed up as the top 3 and we quickly scan the pictures from our fellow YELPERS. Didn't read any reviews. 4 stars, good pictures, open til 12 am. Seemed like a legit option. We walk two blocks up and pass by without even seeing it. Back-tracked and it is literally right next to the Flatiron Hotel.

At 10:15 pm the place was pretty much dead. Just a few patrons at the bar and a table or two finishing up. It was just my kind of place for a quiet dinner catching up with an old friend after a long day.

Didn't expect too much based on the non-existent crowd because I'm so used to crowded bars and restaurants. Just thought we'd crab a beer and snack on a few things. To my surprise, everything we ordered on the menu came out way more spectacular than I had expected, plating and presentation included.

I'm not much of a flatbread person but my friend always orders these silly things and it seriously was the BEST FLATBREAD I've ever had. Super thin crust and loaded with all kinds of goodies and piled high.

I also ordered two Chilled Pemaquid OYSTERS for $3.50 each. Cuz you know, I was feeling fancy.

The SUMMER ALE was on point and hit the spot with the oysters = $8.00

Oh, and somehow 4 pieces of mini fresh baked CORN BREAD appeared on a wooden platter with salt and butter. What?! Hmm, mmm, oh soooo delicious.

WATERMELON SALAD – perfect for a hot humid summer evening.

We also ordered another appetizer dish (I forgot the name of it, sorry) but it was pretty much PORK BELLY and it was ah-mazing.

Oh, and we also had DESSERT. I'm not even a dessert person! It was really good and that's saying a lot coming from me.
Grilled Peach Parfait – Ginger Caramel, Oat Crumble, and Sour Cream Ice Cream $11

Total bill a little over $100

I've never been to Maysville (the city in Kentucky, aka the birthplace of bourbon) but I am assuming that's where the name of this fine establishment comes from. Their motto is "food and bourbon." Solid.

    5 STARS because
    – They have OUTLETS underneath the benches if you sit by the wall with the beautiful HORSE murals so you can also feed your phone while you feed yourself
    – FOOD – on point. We killed every dish and didn't leave anything behind.
    – They have 2 BATHROOMS that are pretty spacious with really nice paper towels. Makes a difference, folks.
    – DECOR/AMBIANCE: loved the light fixtures that made up the ceiling to look like a PUZZLE and the elegantly organized BAR. Never seen a bar look so good.
    – Selection of BOURBON and WHISKEY seemed on point although I didn't try any. I'm an ANGEL'S ENVY girl. Would love to come back here when I need a hard drink.

Even with all the endless options that Manhattan has to offer, I'm going to make it a point to come back here. They also have WHISKEY TASTINGS so what's not to like about this place? I'm sure it gets packed during rush hour but I'm so glad I had this place all to myself.

Thank you YELP, for steering me in the right direction, again!

  5. It's a decent restaurant. I think the ambiance of this place is very Manhattan. It's appropriately lighted, with modern, but not-too-modern decor, and the obligatory wall of brown alcohols. It makes for a nice date spot- we observed several couples who were thinking along those lines as well.

Service… eh, not the best. I don't think the staff were making very much of an effort to hide the fact that they hate working here. Not that anything was overtly wrong, it's just that they weren't the friendliest group.

In terms of food- the star was the chicken liver mousse, though they burned the bread (we had to scrape). My chicken was too damned salty, but still tasty. The two fish dishes the other folks in our group had were decent. Our brown alcohol drinks were also quite good.

It's a decent restaurant, like I said. Worth a try but overall probably not worth a return visit (at least not for us).

  6. This place is pretty great. I generally drink scotch but I enjoyed a bourbon sampling (they do flights here). The bartender was super nice and very knowledgeable about his bourbons. Great vibe and decor. Hope to return to try the food one day!

  7. I'm not going to lie – I hadn't heard of Maysville until approximately 30 seconds before I stepped into the restaurant.  Either I'm living under a rock, or not nearly enough people are giving this place the credit it deserves.

Walked into Maysville on a Tuesday night.  The wait was a half hour long, which we spent at the bar.  The Hound Dog drink is insane.  I wish I could tell you about the other drinks, but I can't because I could not stop drinking these.  We also ordered the crispy oyster appetizer.  These are breaded oysters served with a pickled, thin slice of turnip on top and some spicy jalapeno "mayo".  They were extremely hot (temperature wise) which seemed to be a theme at Maysville – fresh out of the kitchen!

From here, we moved to a small table, which is truly one of my only gripes about this place.  It is tiny and TIGHT.  We were right by the bar area so people kept passing through.  Not a huge deal but I can see where this would be irritating.

They start you off with some very fresh, warm cornbread.  I don't even like cornbread but I was stuffing my face with this.  We ordered the smoked pork belly as an appetizer.  This was served with peanuts and green strawberries.  Interesting dish; I'm not a huge pork belly person to begin with but the flavors all came together nicely.

For entrees, we split the chicken under a brick and the steak.  The server placed the chicken in front of me and oh.  My.  Gosh.  This piece of chicken was awesome.  It was served with grilled romaine and garlic croutons.  Nice portion size, and whatever they marinate that chicken in is RIDICULOUS.  Dining partner asked to please share about halfway through.  I proceeded to throw major side eye.  That chicken would be ripped out of my cold, dead hands.

The steak was good as well – cooked perfectly, served with a garlic whip.  Personally preferred the chicken but both were very solid.

Service was very good.  Drinks were always full, waiters were always around/aware, servers were verrrrry patient with us ("Is a green strawberry a baby one?  Does the green tomato carpaccio have meat in it?" – fyi the answers to that are yes, no), and the restaurant itself is a cool place.

As luck may have it, it was my dining partner's birthday, and when they retreated to the bathroom I asked the server to please put a candle in whatever dessert we ordered.  Unfortunately, dining partner proceeds to DECLINE DESSERT (seriously?  Just my luck) but the servers were super awesome and brought out a little plate with two chocolate pieces and a candle on it anyway.  Thought this was really nice of them, and put the cherry on top of an already great evening.

    Left full/happy; would recommend.

  8. Found this place on a "Best Brunch" search on Gayot.  I don't know why they were on the list.  The brunch was not that great.  The dishes were not particularly more innovative from our usual brunches.  Also, portions were small and my BF and I were still hungry after.  We never went back nor are planning to.
