This place is average and would be a solid three- star except for the fact that both the food and service are inconsistent. I have been to SJG on good days and ordered the right thing and been happy with it overall. It gets a good local crowd for Maplewood, and I think it does well mostly because of the lack of other good pubs in the area. I will definitely go to SJG if someone else picks it as a meeting place, but personally I'd drive a bit further to find better when I'm in the mood for a bar and pub food.
I came here a couple of years ago and remembered how delicious their shepherd's pie was so when I came back recently I had high expectations and I was not disappointed! I ordered the buster burger, which pretty much has anything you can imagine on it (onion ring, avocado, the works) and it comes with an order of shoestring french fries. Everything was delicious and I cannot wait to revisit sometime soon.
Cute little pub in the center of Maplewood. It can get crowded but it's not bad when you want to stop in for a drink or a bite. Food wasn't that memorable from my last visit but it doesn't mean I'd scratch it off my list. Keep it in your back pocket.
I went to have a more authentic Irish experience on St. Patrick's Day weekend compared to most of the "Irish" "pubs" in this area. I ended up ordering a deep-fried burger. With rashers (similar to Canadian bacon) because just because. So much for evaluating authenticity.
Atmosphere: Crowded on a Friday night. Very cramped to try to wait indoors. We shuffled between standing, one person sitting, trying to rearrange stools. Once we had a table, we had to squeeze in and were very close to the next table over. Yet despite that, the noise level was quite decent once we were seated. On a less crowded night – which is probably most of them given the convergence of weekend and holiday – probably not so bad. 3 stars.
Service: Quite good considering the crowd. The seating did take about the 20 minutes promised. The waitress was accommodating, friendly, and visited regularly. The food was out in a very decent amount of time, hot, and exactly as ordered. Great job. 5 stars.
Food: The deep-fried burger was about 20-30 seconds overfried. They should know better. The bacon wrapping on the outside ended up burned and mixed into the burned Guinness breading. But it was a good burger inside. Great size, appropriate ingredients. My date got salmon over quinoa, another nice-looking dish with good portion size. Prices are on the highish side but I think it's deserved. I can imagine on a less busy night the burger would have been perfect – it is tough to juggle all of the dishes with great timing. 3ish stars on toward 4.
Drinks: Good selection, rotating crafts on tap and both Irish and domestic standards. The Smithwick's came in a generously sized pint (was that 16 or 20?) and was very cold with no off taste (which I've gotten in some places).
Verdict: One of many nice restaurant options in downtown Maplewood. I would catch a drink here on a less crowded night and order apps or another meal.
Cool little Irish pub in Maplewood. Personally I think they need to get some better beers in here if they want to keep up with what's good and the beer world. One and done not enough for me to stay.
Been stopping by the past two years, this spot is where I go when I'm in the area with friends. They have a good beer selection on tap (and in bottles), and the pub food that I've tried has not disappointed me yet. The only thing is a preference thing – if you don't mind a crowded bar and/or being shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers, then you'll be fine. If not, you will be hyperventilating and may possibly have a panic attack. Very crowded at times! However, there are tables on the one side of the place – dining area – where you can sit if there are available seats. Go and have a good time.
After a long day of packing and moving, we wanted somewhere easygoing where we could just roll in as we were and kick back with a pint and some hearty grub. An acquaintance suggested here, which was perfect. BF had a turkey club and boneless wings, which were insanely spicy, like for real spicy. I had a pint of cider, and the Old Bay shrimp pot, served a la mussels in a big brothy bowl, with buttery toasted brioche for dipping. Be aware the broth is super garlicky, so I wouldn't get it on date night or if you're looking for a hook-up later. I ordered a side of addictively delicious thin-cut, crispy fries, a little sweet a little salty. Service was good, and it seems the kind of place that's a good go-to for lots of different types of casual occasions. I'm sure I'll be back many times.
Stopped in last friday for happy hour. I had a few vodka tonics and some blue points from the raw bar. They were fresh and extremely clean. Whoever was opening those oysters knew what he was doing. The bartender was perfect – Just enough to make us comfortable and have a couple good laughs. This place is starting to feel more comfortable, I'm becoming a fan.
