I firmly believe that this is a great place to eat, but only if you don't care much about what you're eating. Vine is located just steps away from the main gates of Columbia Unviersity, and it's a rather large restaurant space. There are a lot of problems with this place and they seem to be everywhere: the management; the quality and taste of the food; the menu that attempts many Asian countries' cuisines, but can't get any of them right? Booo! Not to mention, if you order take-out, they'll tell you 20-25 minutes, when they really mean 50.
Vine is confused about its culinary identity. They're serving Chinese, Japanese + sushi, Thai AND Vietnamese?! If you're a lover of Asian foods, you might read that and think this place could be heaven. Unfortunately, besides serving a decent portion, they don't do any food justice, at all. Your best bet is the pad Thai, in my opinion.
Considering the lackluster bites I've had here, I would NEVER order the sushi – I can't imagine the fish is even remotely fresh. The station where they make hand rolls and prepare sashimi looks dusty and there's a film on the glass that separates the counter seats…uh uh. Say it with me, "WIN-DEX!"
To sum things up, I come here when I want a big heap of rice noodles posing as Pad Thai. They give you a ton, and actually throw a lot of shrimp (or other protein) in there. Hellooo, where are the bean vegetables in this dish? May I have a lime wedge instead of this lemon? If you're in a bind (a.k.a. just too hungry to care), Vine could be for you.
Note: Don't waste your money on the steamed shrimp shumai–the dumpling skins are way too thick and you can taste tons of flour, but little else. blech
I don't understand why this place has such a low overall rating.
I am really picky about my sushi and adore this place. The fish is fresh, the menu is extensive and prices are reasonable. Overall it's just a great go-to place- I'm there almost every week. It's always packed but service is fast. You should go!
