Never knew this place existed until a friend of mine who lives in the area told me about it. Her being a Thai food enthusiast (same as I) decided to give this place a try. Ona Saturday night, this place was extra dead and when I say dead I mean we were the only other party eating at the restaurant.
The interior is nice, quite different from most of the other Thai restaurants I've been to. Being the only other party in the restaurant made the service extra attentive (they really didn't have another option now, did they?)
We ordered the curry puffs to start (filled with potato, onion, curry powder and wrapped in puff dough). The puffs were more like rocks. Both my friend and I thought is quite hilarious that our knives couldn't cut through the "puffs" (I wasn't trying to lose a tooth in the process). The filling itself was good, but lacked the curry flavor I was looking for.
Next up I ordered the Spicy Basil Paste Entrée with Chicken, accompanied with fresh basil, broccoli, onion, bell pepper and chili paste. Surprisingly, it was good. Portion size was decent and food was filling. I was expecting the entrée to be spicy, since it did have the word "spicy" in the entrée name. No spiciness whatsoever.
Would I try this place again? Sure. Just wouldn't order the curry rocks.
I was please to see the Tum Thai was able to take an order via GrubHub. My order was ready a bit early, yay! I had the fired dumplings and the Black pepper onion beef. The dumplings were soft and flavorful. The dipping sauce was a good compliment to them. Not too acidic; not too sweet. Although "pepper and onion" sound aggressive, it wasn't. The beef was of good quality as well as the jasmine rice. All I need is a nap 🙂
Ordered soup, spring rolls, pad Thai, chicken satay, and fried pork dumplings. We have eaten Thai food several times before and are familiar with it.
Overall we thought the food was good. The dumplings were light and delicious, and the sauce was delicious as well. The spring rolls were flaky and not greasy, perfect tasting for spring rolls. Pad Thai was hot enough in terms of spice, noodles were cooked perfect but they were very skimpy on the beef with only a few pieces here and there. For $9.50 we expected a bit more beef. The soup was good, although only two tiny shrimp. The chicken satay was good, it had an undertone of curry which I enjoyed. There was this white dipping sauce with the chicken satay that was delicious with the vegetables.
Overall good was very good but expensive for what it was. My husband commented that they thought they were in Westfield not Kenilworth as the prices didn't reflect the area. We would come here again, but this restaurant is by no means affordable or are the portions huge as described in some reviews.
We spent $34 and we did not receive any free items like many other places when you purchase above a certain amount. Oh, and they charge $1 for delivery.. Strange practice..so we deducted it from the tip.
My boyfriend and I like to order from here quite often. I have had their curries and drunken noodles, all of which are delicious. For an appetizer, I love their coconut soup.
Nothing we ordered seemed spicy enough though and I have to remember to ask for extra spicy next time.
Their delivery is also quite prompt and prices are reasonable. This is definitely a nice Thai restaurant to order from.
Our experience with Tum Thai was off to a bad start when the half hour they quoted me for a Saturday night delivery turned into an hour plus. But the woman was always polite when I called and asked about the food and when the delivery man came he literally ran to my door. I really should have known better – I think there's a reason so few places even offer delivery!
Onto the food – it was delicious. We ordered the Crispy Chicken and Scallion Pancakes for appetizers. Both were great and my husband especially liked the chicken. I even liked it and fried chicken is not my thing at all. For entrees I got the Mixed Vegetables with Tofu and hubby got the Sweet and Sour Chicken. Not only were both delicious, but the portion sizes were substantial. I didn't even finish mine, which pretty much never happens. I will definitely be ordering from here in the future – I think next time I'll just pick up. 🙂
