Thai House Rock

“The coconut soup is unbelievable; it has the perfect amounts of heat, sweetness, and flavor, and surpasses any other coconut soup I've ever tried by a mile.”

“My favorites: Tom yum soup (very spicy), teryaki pork, seasame chicken, spring rolls, spicy fried rice, garlic lovers shrimp, and teryaki shrimp.”

“I regularly order the Chicken Rama and the Spicy Crispy Noodles…again the Thai sauce really makes this food kick ass!”

  1. I'm not sure what else I can say that no one else has already said…. ditto on the awesome pad thai, ditto on the kitschy rock memorabilia. Ditto on everything really lol.

I've only really come here for lunch and the lunch specials are kind of limited, I think only 5 dishes which never changes. I wish he'd mix it up a bit from time to time. I also tried to order a order of spring rolls once for lunch and he said that it was not available which I found odd since he provides one spring roll with the lunch order? Didn't really understand why he couldn't just fry up a couple more.

  2. This place is what I would consider a bit of a sleeper. My friends and I came here a few weeks back on our lunch break, bringing along both Thai food fanatics and new blood that have never had the pleasure of enjoying Thai food.

The lunch specials are a great bang for your buck. I ordered the Pad Thai and was pleasantly surprised to get a ton of food which, I took home to eat for dinner. They also give you an egg roll with the specials. Come on, who doesn't like egg rolls? The food does not come out right away which leads me to believe that they are cooking it to order. A few extra minutes for quality never hurt anyone.

I definitely will give them props for playing old Rock n Roll (early Beatles, Elvis, etc) and making menus out of vinyl record covers. Sure the atmosphere is a bit tacky with the old 33 vinyl records lining the walls, but that just adds to the charm of Thai House Rock. Plus the food is solid and that's what will keep me coming back at the end of the day!

  3. I've driven past here countless times and it was always on my to-do list of places to try, especially because my husband and I are in love with Thai food and are always looking to try somewhere new. We finally ended up here because our regular Thai place was closed and we were craving Thai.

It's a tiny hole in the wall place, nothing special to look at, but I find that sometimes those types of places have the best food. We walked inside and took a seat at the one empty table out of four. One of the walls is covered in old records, hence the name "Thai House Rock." The waiter came over after a few minutes and handed us menus- which are in old record covers.

I ordered the chicken peanut sauce dish and a soup. The soup was delicious – better than my other favorite place's – which is saying a lot. Husband ordered egg rolls and those were disappointing. They were kinda gross. The main meals, however, were great, and rivaled our favorite standby in flavor. Husband had the spicy fried rice and loved it. My chicken peanut sauce meal was also great.

Overall, this was a good experience (minus the egg rolls. .. please skip!) and we'd be happy to return in the future.

  4. This is my favorite Thai restaurant in New Jersey.

Thai House Rock is a small Thai restaurant on Saint George Ave. It's located near a Laundromat and BBQ place, across from Burger King. The restaurant's hours vary, so I'd call before heading over there. I think they're closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. But the odd hours still make it worth eating there. Parking is really limited, but you can park on the side street (that you make a left/right onto).

I've been going to THR for the last 8 or 9 years. The owners are still the same. The food is still awesome. This quaint, little restaurant seats under 30 people or so comfortably, but no more than that at a time. The restaurant has a "Rock" theme, with old vinyl records from the 50's & 60's. The paper menus are placed on the records as well. My favorite thing to order is the Pad Thai. It comes with chicken, shrimp, and a Thai Salad with a Peanut dressing. Their Pad Thai is the best. It has the perfect blend of spicy and sweet. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

They have a wide selection of Thai dishes, including Thai Basil, Curries, Duck, etc. On Saturdays and Sundays they serve their version of "Pad See Ew", flat noodles with a black bean sauce, another Thai favorite of mine. They have a lot of appetizers, such as calamari, tofu bites, and spring rolls. Those come out faster; they're crispy, hot, and delicious while you wait for your entrees. The appetizers are smaller portions, but that's better so you save room for the main dishes. They don't serve dessert unfortunately, but I'm sure you could ask to bring in cake or some sweets. Plus, there's an ice cream shop a few doors down from Thai House Rock.

The owners are kind, friendly, and nice. This may not seem like a super fancy trendy Thai restaurant, but it's the best. I can't wait to eat there again.

  5. The BEST Thai food ever.  Delicious Pad Thai, Spring Rolls, and Chicken Rama.  It's a hole in the wall so don't expect fancy dining here.  Run by husband and wife that are super friendly and do a great job handling the volume.  Worth the wait for food, tables, and take out.

  6. A friend who hands down would give this place a 100 out 10 brought me here. He's weirdly obsessed with it and claims it is the best thai food he's ever had! However, I'm a vegetarian and there was only 3-4 options for me that were pure vegetarian. I told the man who was serving us that I don't want fish sauce, oyster sauce or egg in my food and he told me what I could get that was vegetarian friendly. The menu was already very limited. I got the eggplant with tofu, it was probably a 2.5 out of 5 on the taste scale and a decent sized quantity. Overall I would give this place a 4 because the guy was so so so nice to me! And as I mentioned my friend loves this place. Even though it's not that vegetarian friendly, it seems like a lot of people really like the food this place has to offer and it truly is a hidden gem. Check it out sometime!

  7. The tom kha gai or tom kha kai (listed on the menu as chicken coconut soup (tom ka)) is ridiculous. Get it if you like heat, pass on it if you don't. IT IS HOT. Best tom kha gai I have ever had. It is skimpy on the chicken, but lets face it, you don't get this for the chicken…its all about the broth.

Also had the spicy noodles, fried crispy noodles, and the pad thai.

The spicy noodles and friend crispy noodles have about the same amount of heat but are obviously completely different in texture, though somewhat similar in flavor. The crispy noodles are nice and light (though you can easily get stuffed by eating it). Don't remember how the pad thai was but my gf liked it a lot.

last time gf and i were there we put our order in but he recommended we get something else as he said the dishes we selected tasted very similar, i opted for something different and it was also lower in price, he was happy with my selection. That's customer service.

However, this is also part of the reason i gave this place 4 stars. The gentleman said our initial choices tasted similar. Turns out so did the second…does everything taste similar?

Portions are more than sufficient, we have yet to finish a dish here.

Its impressive to see the one gentleman working there- answering the phone, taking orders, serving, cooking, busing, and making sure everything is as you like it.

Got there at around 630p on a Tuesday there was no wait and there were a few free tables (mind you there are 14ish seats in the whole place). By 7p all the tables were taken, there were people waiting outside, the phone was ringing off the hook, and there were people waiting to place and pick up orders inside. Again, this dude does it all himself, its impressive but also too bad that he doesn't have some help in there.

Call ahead as he will only seat you if you are there at least a half hr before close, another time applies to take out, maybe 45 mins? not sure…

Its very good, is it the best? I don't think so, but its very good.

  8. This is a tiny little Thai place, and most times I drive by without ever realizing that it's there.  You really have to be looking out for it, since it shares space with a Portuguese BBQ spot and a laundromat.  As someone else wrote, I don't recommend you park in the front, getting out while traffic is moving on St. George's Rd is next to impossible.  So I pulled around the side of the building and parked there.

As I've said, its tiny – 6 tables in there.  I assume the owner is the nice gentleman sitting behind the counter who does takes the food orders and serves as the wait staff/bus boy.

I went in on a random Friday night by myself, and was planning on just taking out, but I like the kitschy feel of the place so I decided to eat in.  There's tons of 50's & 60's albums and covers on the wall, as well as playing on speakers.  This guy loves his doo-wop music, which is totally out of character for this place, but it really works.

I ordered the spring rolls and the thai basil with chicken.  The spring rolls were fresh and nice and crispy and I devoured them all by myself.  The thai basil is SPICY (and indicated on the menu).  Most places I've eaten will mark something as spicy, which really isn't that bad, but not here.  So if you're looking for spicy, this is your mecca.  If not, the owner says that they can adjust the heat on any dish.

Solid meal, friendly owner, complete win.
