  1. We absolutely LOVE the bagels here!

So far we've been super lucky and have been able to get our everything bagels when they've just come out of the oven, so they're steaming hot when they are given to us (with a schmear of veggie cream cheese)! But the thing that takes the cake is the fact that their bagels are still good the day after!!

My dad ate four bagels from here when he was visiting from Asia, and left yesterday with a dozen of them shoved in his luggage for my mom.

I love that it's a mom and pop, and be forewarned it is cash only.

Definitely our favorite bagel shop in Astoria!

  2. Very amazing bagel … with lox and cream cheese.  Lives up to my NYC bagel standard.

  3. A neighborhood gem, for sure, this little bagel shop is my favorite place on the weekends for a whole wheat everything bagel with low-fat vegetable cream cheese. Inexpensive and unpretentious, this is a must-nosh place.

  4. Your local no frills bagel store. They're the ones you come to if your picking up a dozen bagels in the morning for your family. They're bagels are on point and the service is quick.

Downfalls: it's cash only and they have no grill (no breakfast sandwiches).

  5. First and foremost, it's cash only!

Service was excellent. The older gentleman who I think was the owner (a little patch of white hair in his front left side) was very nice. There wasn't many people in the store at 5AM but we were able to chat for a little bit and even joke around that early in the morning. He's a people person.

As for the food, I didn't eat the bagel there immediately. I walked for about 15 minutes home before eating it. By that time, the bagel was no longer warm. The bagel was still chewy. I got the cinnamon bagel with walnut raisin spread. Surprisingly, it wasn't too sweet. After I opened the wrapper, I noticed that the spread was neatly placed in between the sliced bagel. There wasn't spillage and the wrapping paper was clean. The bagel was also cleanly sliced right down the middle. He also gave enough napkins in the to go bag. I had the exact same bagel and spread at Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Company for comparison. The bagel itself are the same. The spreads are slightly different. I think the Brooklyn Bagel gave me more spread and had more walnuts in the spread. I will say that the Brooklyn bagel spread was sweeter. The long lines at the Brooklyn Bagel is a turn off as well but I like the ability to use a credit card so I'll probably head back there. The ambiance is also better at Brooklyn bagel but Astoria Bagel has a more homey feel to it. Sort of like the feel at Family Corner Restaurant.

In terms of preparation, I saw a water bath in the back which I presumed is where they water boil their bagels but I also saw a huge oven to the left of it. There are about 5 tables of 4 at this place. It's a fairly small store and one could easily walk right past it. From the outside, it kin of looks like a laundromat.

    Cost for my bagel:  $3.75

    Store Hours:  4AM-4PM daily

I would recommend this place as they have tons of other spreads to try and it's a more homey/family owned store. The Brooklyn bagel place feels like a starbucks.

  6. After almost two years of eating bagels in Brooklyn, and being disappointed, I have to say that even though we always liked Astoria Bagel before, we didn't know just how good we had it in Astoria.   This is literally one of the two or three best bagels in NYC.  Just perfect, perfect bagels.

Get one from here and one from Ess-a-bagel in the city and see what you like better.

Also, the owner's nephew (I think) has done a lot to dispel the grumpiness I mentioned before.  Now it's just NYC gruff; which is perfectly fine.  Get your bagel and move along.

  7. This place has some of the best bagels in Astoria in one of the more unassuming locations, right near 29th and Astoria Blvd. It's best to go in the morning when the bagels are fresh. I bought 4 bagels today for $4.80. There are a few places to sit inside and you can grab a drink, assorted cream cheese and coffee. The staff is very friendly and I highly recommend coming here. Great bagels! CASH ONLY.

  8. I've been here a couple times and I'll agree with everyone else that the bagels themselves are delicious.  They are fresh made there every day and have the perfect consistency.

I think that the downfall here is really that I've either gotten my bagel and my order was wrong or it had too much cream cheese or butter on it and it ruined the bagel.  Once I ordered a bagel with butter and there was so much butter on it that it seeped through both the wax paper it was wrapped in but also the paper bag that they put it in.

They've gotten orders wrong before and are unapologetic.  The staff is also a bit rude and if you don't have your order ready when they get to you, they get very visibly annoyed.  I'm not the biggest fan and since I have to travel a distance to get here, I probably won't be coming here often.  I will say that if I'm ever just craving a bagel, I'd come here to get the bagel, have them toast it, and dress it myself.

I have a friend that raves about the lox here and I'm not a huge lox fan, but they do seem to make a tasty looking lox bagel sandwich…for a price though!  Be prepared to pay upwards of $8-$9 for this sandwich.
