Maison Kayser, are your store managers and bakers sleeping? Not sure if Maison Kayser is showing growing pains but it seems like the quality in service and product seems to be slipping in many of their locations. Their bread is still tasty, but I had problems recently, like getting a burnt loaf a few months ago. This location is clean, as is all, with the huge pastry counters and the shelves and baskets of bread. The woman counting the money in the cashier didn't even look up when I entered, and the other staffer was busily emptying baskets of bread, not meeting my eye as he went about his business. No one said anything so I waited to see how long I would be ignored. A few minutes passed before the woman finally asked if she could help me. At least say, "I will be with you in a few minutes." if you can't give me a smile. I gave you a smile! As far as the bread goes, it had the same chewy crust and wonderful mouth feel as always. But the olive loaf I bought was missing the huge pieces of olives that had always made I a great loaf. It were as if instead of putting in many whole olives that got cut when you sliced the loaf, the cook had decided to put in chopped bits. There were many chopped bits but the intense olive flavor the loaf used to have was gone, due to the absence of the big pieces. I used to love to how the saltiness of an a huge piece of olive would contrast with the pure, unsalted bread. This may not stand out to a person just new to their breads, but for someone who has been a loyal customer for a long time, I notice the difference and am sorely disappointed. Perhaps corporate needs to send secret shoppers to their stores.
This place is adorable. It's a wonderful French-syle cafe that's the perfect spot for meeting friends for a cup of tea or a bite to eat.
For breakfast, I ordered a cup of tea and the daily bread basket with jam and butter. I really liked how they brought a whole mini-pot of hot water with the tea bag. And the bread was wonderful!
I've walked by Maison Kayser many times thinking it was just a bakery, but came here the other night for dinner with a friend who had enjoyed lunch here earlier and suggested we try it for dinner. I was impressed with the food, which had an authentic French feel. The complimentary bread basket was very fresh (as you would expect from a bakery), and the menu was reasonably priced for NY. My dining companion is a vegetarian and did not have difficulty finding an option on the prix fix menu. For $25, I had the mesclun salad (greens, radish, cucumber, and tomatoes in a light lemon vinaigrette), quiche Lorraine, and a oatmeal chocolate chip cookie.I LOVED the quiche-it's rarely something I eat but this one was fantastic.
I enjoyed the food but was unimpressed with the service.
I came here for breakfast on a Friday morning around 10am. It had a handful of full tables around this time. I ordered the Avacot something, sorry I don't speak french! It was basically avocado toast and eggs cooked in whatever style you would like. I enjoyed the meal and it was the perfect breakfast size. I also tried the iced latte which was a nice on a hot summer morning. Overall, service was fine and the food was good. Nothing amazing to write home about but I was happily filled!
I was so happy to see MK all over Manhattan. The last time I had MK bread was over 10 years ago in Paris.
If I could, I would move in and live in the bread area and slather myself in sweet cream butter.
Yes, the baguette is amazing but get the basket of day bread! It opened my taste buds to flavors and textures that I wouldn't have selected on my own such as a turmeric hazelnut, olive walnut, and raisin. All so perfect in texture and flavor.
They have the best fresh baguettes in the city. Always fresh! Their dessert is always top notch, I love the eclaires. They have a large restaurant and seating area as well. I usually go in and sit down for a latte and chocolate croissant, the place has a euro vibe and you feel like you're in France. Very affordable, and great for a quick stop or sit down.
This is my favorite spot to buy fresh bread. My favorites are the East side baguette, which is a braided loaf with several individual boules that can be broken off and shared, the "cereales" seeded baguette, the buckwheat baguette, and their traditional baguette (basically all the baguettes lol). The baguettes are all around $3, and the full loaves are a little more. The prices aren't bad, and the bread is some of the best I've had. Much better than the supermarket bread in the area which they sell for a similar price. One day I did ask them if they ever sold day old bread. The answer was no because they donate it to local organizations that help the poor. That made me like them even more! I have yet to try their pastries, but they all look delectable. Will definitely make it a point to come back for them.
Stopped by Maison Kayser on the way home to bring back a light dessert and some hot chocolate. There's a nice selection of French pastries to choose from. They looked palatable and I'm definitely down to try some another time but the one my fiancée wanted, the raspberry tart, was hard and, all in all, not too good.
The hot chocolate was different in that it was creamier! I was actually expecting something thicker like Parisian hot chocolate but it just turned out to be more ordinary. Still, it was quite good!
I'd be down to give this place another shot and try something I'm more partial to… like a soft eclair or something chocolatey!
