Cooper's was one of my go-to bars when I lived in the area. Why? Beer menu. They always had something worth trying on tap and even had Hill Farmstead stuff on somewhat regularly (at least as regularly as that gets). This is the reason I would even pick them over better-valued happy hour spots. Their happy hour otherwise is pretty lame; only a handful of lesser beers are discounted. The place also looks great, the bartenders are very good, you can grab a seat at the bar or along the wall without a ton of trouble, and while the place is busy it was never too noisy. Good whiskey selection too although I never took advantage.
Main reason for 3 stars here is the sole food experience I've had here. The poutine was a sad example of why you normally don't order this dish in NYC. It sounds good enough: hand cut fries, cheddar curds, bacon oxtail gravy, and pickled chiles. The fries were soggy under the gravy which unfortunately held little to no flavor. The curds were plentiful but they didn't taste very fresh. The whole thing needed salt or some other kind of spice desperately. The pickled chilies were enjoyable though. I struggled to come close to finishing it, only because I was starving and it was $12 down the drain otherwise. Average it out and give this 4 stars for the bar, and 2 stars at best for the food.
Grabbed a bite here for dinner with a friend that was visiting the city. We arrived around 7 on a weekday and were lucky to be seated at the last open table.
This place has a ton of beers and ciders, so if you're looking to drink, this is a good spot. The rest of their menu looks pretty tasty too, though some dishes might be a bit overpriced.
For my meal, I decided to go with the salmon. While there was nothing wrong with the salmon, I felt that it lacked a bit of flavor and was slightly over cooked. I appreciate crispy skin, but they charred this one a little too much. That being said, I did enjoy the dill sauce and potatoes and Brussels sprouts that came with, but even then the flavors were very simple.
Overall, this place has a cool vibe and our waitress was uniquely entertaining, but the food doesn't have me rushing back any time soon.
Cooper's is a solid EV spot for drinks, watching games, and for food. And it's cute inside and well priced! It's spacious, has room at the bar, long tables for big groups, and smaller tables as well.
FOOD:
-Mac & Cheese: This stuff is amazing. It comes in a hot skillet, covered in a layer of baked cheese. YUM (pic included).
-Bread sticks & beer batter cheese dip: Also a must-get. The bread sticks are perfectly crispy on the outside, and nice and soft on the inside. Sprinkled with a bit of salt on top. This comes with a delectable cheese dip! (pic included).
I've been here a few times after work. Each time I had a hard time obtaining a drink. Was it packed? Nope! The bartenders were just inattentive. One time I had some food… I got Wings that were so greasy they were inedible and a few bites later I was sick to my stomach. A huge nope!
mixed feelings about this place. classy atmosphere for a bar with a mix of entrees and small plates. the craft beer menu is nice ($8 range). however, the food is just ok. I'd order the beef sliders again. wings are ok, nice crunchy carrots. my friend wanted the fish and chips special, but they were out of it. go figure. that should have been a red alert signal to not order the fish tacos, which were a total fail. three for $11?! they looked ok (see pic) but the fish was small, dry, bland, and honestly, burnt. they are only worth a $1 each at this quality and frankly tasted like leftovers from happy hour. In retrospect, I should have sent these back. but just upset that they are willing to serve this. horrible, just horrible.
One of the best craft beer bars in the area.
The best deal is certainly the $1 fish tacos. I had low expectations, but they were great. Tender, some creamy sauce, and acidic slaw. Order at least a handful and you have a dinner.
The taplist is usually quite spot on with both locals and some hype beers with Grimm and Hill Farmstead on sometimes.
I have been to this location a few times now but the place in the east village is cool too. In Chelsea it doesn't seem to get too busy until late and when I was there on a Saturday night a DJ started just as we were leaving around 10:30 so if you need a place to dance it might be good for that. Kind of a hipster vibe but it doesn't seem too pretentious. Although for some reason sometimes the drinks are served in wine glasses but I kind of liked it a little sophisticated.
They have a huge list of craft beers and ciders along with yummy food. I love cider so I always go for that. The first one I had though I wasn't into. It must have been made with green or tart apples because it tasted like someone had squeezed a lemon into it! Next I shared a 16oz can of more traditional cider with my friend. It was from Texas where I didn't know they had apples but I liked it.
For food my friend and I shared the poutine, which comes with cheese curds and oxtail gravy. It was very filling but so good. We also had some sliders which were a great deal at $3 each and great tasting! Coopers has different specials every day so watch out for those. The Monday night $1 fish tacos sounds awesome.
It would be great if they added more to their menu or changed it up once in a while. They could use some more vegetarian options as a lot of people I know don't eat meat or try to eat less of it like myself. Otherwise they have some good options here like the Brussels sprouts and truffle fries.
I've been here several times and really enjoy this restaurant. It's one of those places that is very consistent and has great deals. I frequent on Mondays for their fish taco special. $1 fish tacos with the purchase of any drink, an amazing deal in NYC. Fun atmosphere, loud but not too booming. Great for a casual date night or drinks with a group of friends.
