Lallisse Mediterranean Wine & Food

“While the outside of Penelope with their wooden sign looks ferociously cute, I was more hungry to eat and start my day.”

“I ordered the eggs benedict with salmon, and it was served with a fresh garden salad and potatoes – it was perfection.”

“This spot could just as easily be in the trendy Galata neighborhood of Istanbul as here in Murray Hill.”

  1. Though there were only one or two other tables that were occupied, the time it took for the food come out was exceedingly long. Considering we were on lunch break and it was the avocado bruschetta that took the longest to come out, it was bad. The hummus wasn't very good but we did enjoy the chicken sandwich we shared along with the pasta bolognese. Though I'm not a fan of avocado, I was disappointed for my friend that there were only a few tiny pieces of avocado scattered on the bruschetta. I'd try another lunch spot next time and wouldn't come back.

  2. Went here for brunch at 2 on a Sunday. The food was really good, but the service from the waiter was awful. It wasn't too busy and after waiting for 20 minutes the waiter finally came over to take our order. He was super quiet and didn't say much to us at all. We only saw our waiter once the entire meal, and that was only when he came to take our order. We had to flag down the bus boy each time we wanted water or more drinks. I really hope the bus boys get a fair share of the tips because they were the only ones to stop at the table and check in. When the check came they undercharged us (we're not complaining) and it seems this place does not have their stuff together…overall great food but bad service. Won't be back again

  3. It seems like the only reason this place gets business is because the line at Penelope is too long.  Because that's the reason why we ended up here — and the last time I eat here.

We had a large group – 7 of us – so it was great that they could accommodate us in no time.  The menu seemed more appetizing than the actual food unfortunately.

We got the eggs and merquez, pancakes and eggs benedict. For those of us who got the eggs and merquez, we got the short end of the stick.  The sausage was WAY undercooked (when you cut the sausage, the skins were impenetrable), and all of our eggs were not done correctly.  I asked for eggs over medium and the entire yolk came out with a poke. My friend who got poached eggs had eggs that were way under done as well.

We asked for our food to be recooked, which they did, but that took an additional 10 minutes, on top of our already 20 minute wait for the food.

The waiter also seemed to take the "easy way out" by being unwilling to split the check.  He ended up doing it for us, but the system crashed so we had to wait another 10 minutes for them to rebill us.

All in all, food was meh and the service was even meh-er.

  4. ***Delicious food, Amazing waiter staff, Highly recommend***

I could go on and on about how amazing this place is but you have to just come and try it for yourself. I love the ambiance of the place because you can come here to catch up with a friend or come here on a date. The food is absolutely delicious and I've been here a few times and I've never left feeling unsatisifed. I highly recommend this place!

  5. I went here one time for brunch since the wait at Penelope's was too long, I may return for dinner but not for brunch.

To start, if the place is half full you get stuck with the high seating which is reason enough to go somewhere else to eat.  The stools are high and unless you are 6'5" your feet cannot reach the bar on the bottom so your feet are just dangling. And my seat was a bench which was literally only 8 inches deep which of course is clearly too small for any adult to sit comfortably on.  And also no bar to rest your feet on.

And the food.  I had the pancakes.  They were more bland than the ones you would make from a Bisquick mix.  My friend had the eggs benedict which was decent.  I am a tea drinker so I ordered tea.  They did not have loose lease tea.  The tea bag they gave me clearly had been wet then dried.  My friend's coffee was only okay.  I hope their dinner is better.

  6. We were waiting to go to a different place in the neighborhood but running out of time, decided to come in here for a quick bite instead. The dips and bread were okay, albeit their omelet was better.

  7. 3.5 star review.

Not gonna lie, I ended up here because I did not want to wait on line at Penelope's for brunch, which is just across the street.
It's not that I'm not a fan of Mediterranean food, it's just that I was wary about what kind of brunch options they would have since I was expecting more of a fusion brunch menu, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that their menu included traditionally American brunch items, such as eggs benedict and french toast. But, they also have hummus platters and omelets with tangy twists, such as their Eggs & Merquez, that has lamb sausages and mesclun salad. So, you win either way!

It turns out that Lallisse is also a wine bar but I've only been here once for their brunch. As soon as you walk in, you'll notice it's clean and well-lit. And there are pieces of colorful fabrics and tapestry hanging on the walls to add to the Mediterranean feel.

We ordered their hummus platter and smoked salmon eggs benedict.
The hummus platter needs a little work when it comes to their presentation and I couldn't tell if they made it on premise. It comes with enough pita bread but they gave us another plateful because we asked nicely.
The smoked salmon eggs benedict were just as good as they would have been at Penelope's.

Just as I mentioned in my review for Penelope, I think one of the main reasons why Lallisse does well is because of the lack of good brunch options in the Murray Hill and Kips Bay area. The only other option aside from Lallisse and Penelope would be Barking Dog or a bagel shop.

  8. By default, I wouldn't think of a Mediterranean restaurant for brunch. Penelope was 1.5hr wait and my stomach yelled at me!

Initially the waiter said we had to sit at the bar because they didn't have a table for 2 people. Not that they didn't have any available, but they didnt have ANY. A little coaxing and the 2 of is sat at a table for 3. I'm ok with that.

Fast forward to 1hr later after finishing our meal we were asked to give up our table so that another  party could sit there. It's happened to me at other brunch spots so I'm ok with that.

Backtrack to the cold eggs… Not ok. Maybe for a 2am "what do I throw down to please my stomach" but not for brunch.

I'm guessing the initial interaction just made me expect the worst.
