A new burger joint. Glad I stumbled on it because I've never been to this part of Garden City before. No waiter, just a counter to order from. Fresh juicy burgers with some interesting combinations of toppings. I had the Copperfield (there's a magic theme to the place). Awesome. And you can fries or tater tots. I had mine smothered and covered with chili, cheese & bacon. If I ever get back to Garden City, this is a must.
Stopped in at Bonzo's Magic Burger this week with no expectations and were pleasantly surprised. It might be one of the best meals we have had in a long time.
After walking in not once but twice (had to get my wallet in the car), standing and staring at the menu, deciding what to order, and generally looking around, I didn't realize it was a magic-themed burger joint until I walked into the bathroom, saw a poster of a magician, and put it all together for myself. Then I came back out and marvelled at the collection of photographs and other magic-themed decor.
The menu has a lot of burger offerings, along with some off-menu blackboard burgers. There's a fair amount of non-burger options as well, and a wealth of sides to go along with your entree: tots, fries, sweet potato fries, sweet potato tots, grilled cheese bites, you name it. There's even a soup of the day (it was the "couch potato" when we went).
I chose the Silvan (American cheese, chopped tomatoes, potato chips, and magic sauce but I subbed pickles for the tomatoes, $5.50) my boyfriend chose the Henning (bleu cheese dressing with chunks of bleu cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato with Bonzo's sauce, $6.75), and we got a side of fries to split. It was a tough call because the burger list here is insane: for example, the alakazam is a burger served between two pieces of french toast with american cheese, bacon, topped with an over easy egg drizzled win maple syrup ($7.50). I'm going to have to come back for that.
When we got our orders, it came with a surprise cup of the couch potato soup (I had inquired about it, but ultimately decided not to order it). We also received a free dessert: a chocolate chip brownie topped with chocolate ice cream, chocolate syrup, caramel sauce, and whipped cream. I suspect that this is because we were the only people in the place the entire time we were there, except for when this one guy came to pick up an order.
Everything was KILLER. It was all so good. We loved every second of it and finished everything except for half of a burger that we brought home. This is not my favorite burger I've ever had, but it was well-executed and had a great flavor. My boyfriend felt the same about his burger. I'm reading that people think the burger was very bland, but I thought mine was seasoned nicely, especially since it was heavily covered in toppings. The patty was covered with cheese, and the entire burger was covered with chips that were then doused in magic sauce. I'm not sure what was in the magic sauce, but it tasted like ketchup and mayo and happiness and something else.
This magic sauce also came with the fries, which were really incredible. They were cut thick but not too thick, crispy all over the outside but still soft on the inside, and not too salty. They were really just perfect.
And the soup! I am so glad I got a complimentary soup because it is some of my favorite soup that I've ever had. I asked what was in it, and if I remember correctly, it's potato, onion, and cream. Sounds simple and plain but it was full of umami and dairy happiness. It was very creamy, smooth as butter, not too thick or granular, spiced nicely, with chunks of potato and slivers of onion. I can only hope that the couch potato will be lounging around the next time we go. Because we're going again, all the time.
Oh and the dessert. My boyfriend never eats dessert but he helped me polish this one off. The brownie was dense, and there was syrup everywhere.
Finally, I really dug the playlist that they had going. Lots of good tunes the entire time we were there.
Had this bookmarked for the longest time. Hubs wanted to get take out from somewhere tonight so I picked this place. What a delicious burger! Fries were good too. The burger was so flavorful just yummy. Will definitely be getting take out from here again one night. Highly recommend this place! Right on Nassau Blvd easy to get to. Love their magic sauce 🙂
I've been here a while ago when I tried the magic burger, but I wasn't too impressed with it. Probably the magic sauce, not a fan. I recently noticed they had a burger called the Bippity Bobbity Boo, which is topped with cheese and a bacon onion jam. If you are a MSG goer then you probably recognize this as Drew Nieporent 's signature Daily Burger. On price alone, Bonzo wins being about a $4 discount on the overpriced garden burger.
Comparing the two further, I prefer the juicy daily burger itself, but not at the premium price. The Bippity with its onion bacon jam and cheesy goodness hits the mark for sure. I subbed the english muffin for the regular sesame seed bun. It also came with a delicious pickle on the side.
The tots I had were awesome and crispy even after bringing them home in a take out bag. The magic sauce (a slightly spicy, vinegarry mayo) works well with these. Also had the vanilla shake which was thick, creamy and freshly made – high quality.
I've said it before that we are probably at the pinnacle of gourmet burger greatness with so many options to choose from and in all that greatness Bonzo's casts an alluring spell!
