“Fried mashed potato, shishito peppers (i love these) and the bacon (as if you'd be sick of meat by now) are definitely a must order.”
“Anyway, on my regular list of "hullo, I'll eat you" foods are the butcher steak, whole mackerel, pan fried mashed potatoes, and shishito pepps.”
“Have ordered the axe handle steak and a few other entrees, all of which were excellent.”

I'm not sure if St. Anselm is a hidden gem, though it surely meets the characteristics. Small place, dark, privately run, chic, friendly, full of locals…..shall I say more?!
I am so happy with my visit to this lovely restaurant. What a refreshing feeling to come to a place were people just love the art of dining. I arrived hoping it wasn't going to be too packed since they don't take reservations. Thankfully, there was room at the bar. My dinner was with an old friend who stays in Brooklyn. We both love to eat so our pockets and tummy a were ready.
The bar tender was knowledgeable and welcoming. He provided the specials and gave us plenty of time to review the menu. He did also want to mention the kitchen was closing soon but did it in a way where he wasn't rushing. We sat towards the end of the bar near the kitchen, which consists of an open space with a huge fire grill. The heat was present but not overwhelming.
Bone In Ribeye- 35 oz of delicious, buttery , perfectly cooked heaven. The steak was seasoned perfectly. Salty, spicy and chard. This was perfect! Cooked medium & made with love indeed. Of course we shared and there was still some left over.
Cauliflower- Amazing! Again the chard flavor was present which I very much enjoyed. They were cooked al dente and there was a generous amount
Truffle mash potatoes- I'm not a fan of mash potatoes but my friend was so insistent on me trying these that I had to take a bite. I'm so glad I did……the truffle just punched me in the face! What really got me was the texture. See what they did was mash the potatoes, then turn it in a hot cake of some sorts. It's so great to play with textures. This was very good!
We also shared a bottle of Viña Tondonia Reserva. It was nice, very light. I would have opted for a Malbec but my companion is just starting to ease into drinking wines.
I will definitely be back here the next time I'm in BK, I would love to sample their other dishes including dessert.
This place is so hyped so I had high expectations.
The wait for two was 35- 45 minutes (but actually an hour) so I had high expectations.
They were not met.
Burrata – had better. Also had worse. But definitely had better.
Fried mashed potatoes – tasted like the fake boxed kind. I'm guessing the truffle oil is to mask that?
Mushrooms – honestly, I was most excited for these because mushrooms are my most favorite. Unfortunately, these were salted beyond recognition.
Veal with chimichurri – actually super great and a surprisingly generous portion.
Bar steak – also very good, but slightly smaller portion and pre-cut (I am capable of using a knife).
The meats were fine, but everything else disappointed. I'd probably give 3 stars if it weren't for the hype and wait. I definitely won't return.
Overall, a great dinner at St Anselm. The venue was packed so be prepare to wait. We put our name down and had a table in about two hours. We did anticipate this and cocktails nearby worked well for us in the meantime.
The prawn cocktail for entree was a welcomed blast from the past, served traditionally with saltine crackers.
The steak was high quality, although mine was cooked medium (ordered medium rare), it was very tasty just the same. The plate it was served on was chipped in several places.
The side of cauliflower was slightly crunchy to bite and delicious. The dessert selection won't disappoint either. A place to visit when in Brooklyn.
St. Anselm's food is perfection, but be warned: Sides aren't included with proteins, which means the bill adds up fast.
Service was slow, even though we were the first people to place our orders shortly after the restaurant opened at 5 p.m., but it was worth the wait. We got our food around 5:47.
Also, the wait for a table can be long, so it's best to get here early. They were packed by 6 p.m.
I recommend the following:
-Hanger steak (very good and not tough)
-Grilled cauliflower w/balsamic (I never knew cauliflower could be so divine)
-Pan-fried mashed potatoes (delicious full garlic-rosemary flavor)
-Rum sticky toffee cake with ice cream (so good it will make you want to slap your mama)
-Fingerling potatoes (a bit too firm; a fine side dish, but it didn't wow me)
The decor is warm and inviting. The server was fine. She didn't come over much, even when few people were there, but she was polite.
This is a great date spot. And even though this is a steakhouse, a vegetarian can find excellent sides here, but be sure to tell the server that you're a vegetarian because some sides are made with lard.
I think I became a "super regular" in less than a month. I came across this place via Yelp (of course) and thought I'd give it a try – although I live in Bedstuy and this place is located in Williamsburg…nonetheless, a try so worthy of so many things.
I am absolutely in love with the scallops and developed a weird fetish for them (could fetish be the right word?) and have ordered them every single time i have visited. There was one week when i came twice. I felt stalker-ish (however being a stalker feels like lol) . The butcher steak is to die for; super juicy and cooked to perfection and then some. My two favorite desserts are both the Pot de Creme and the toffee cake. Seriously delicious and even a hazard for those who plan those stupid diet things.
One of my favorite things about this restaurant is the staff. Each and every one that I have came across have been super friendly, welcoming and treated me like V.I.P. every single time. They are just great to be served by. Even Sarah, the Chef took her time to chat with me. What Chef does that? Thank you all….I'll obviously be seeing you guys soon….sooner than later, since I epicly fail at cooking.
xoxo.
I have been meaning to go to St. Anselm forever, I saw a picture of their famous Hanger Steak on Instagram and oh sweet baby Jesus did it look good. The place is pretty cool looking since it kinda has an old butcher shop feel and the entire place is covered in wood. The restaurant is really popular so get there early, it is not uncommon for prime time waits on the weekend to be an 1.5 to 2 hours. I also give kudos to the all female kitchen staff, they rocked it out.
The food:
Butchers Steak- Hanger Steak, garlic butter. This is the main reason my group came to the restaurant and it was great. The Hanger Steak was really tender for this kind of cut and the beef flavor was really good. The price on this was not bad at all, it was $22 for a decent size cut. This is a must order, it's great taste and great value. yelp.com/user_local_phot…
47oz Piedmontese Ax Handle Rib Eye- This was the oh shit moment, it was a lot of meat. The Ax handle was a huge rib eye cut and it was pretty tender but not as beefy as I was expecting. The rib eye was good but the hanger steak was great. This is worth trying for a first time visit but not a second. yelp.com/user_local_phot…
Bourbon Brined Pork Porterhouse- I enjoyed the flavor of this and the pork was nice and tender but I made the mistake of eating the beef first. The pork was good but does not compare with the beef options, I enjoyed it but it was not as sexy as the beef. yelp.com/user_local_phot…
Pan-Fried Mashed Potatoes- Truffle Oil. This was great, it had a nice outer crust and the mash underneath was so light and fluffy. This is an absolute must order.
Grilled Long Beans- Garlic butter. The string beans were a good veg addition but they were just OK. Nothing really too exciting, just a good way for it to not be all meat dinner. lol
excellent steakhouse with a nice vibe, friendly service, and super tasty food.
that being said, the downsides here are the long waits (no reservations and unless you get a table right when they open the waits can be hours) and the space is very small so the tables can feel cramped and sometime very hot without a lot of air circulation.
Came here around 8:30pm on a Sunday night. When we walked in, wee were only able to get seats at the bar which was no problem since there was just two of us and we can get a view of the cooking area. We started off with the grilled octopus which was very flavorful and citrusy. I had the shoulder blade lamb and my bf had the butcher steak. Both tasted pretty good but the steak was a tad bit over salted but not a big deal. The only thing I didn't like was that another couple who sat down and ordered 10 minutes after us got their entrees before we did.
