  1. Poor Herbie's is a nice little local spot in Madison's town center. Drinks on tap are well-rounded, and the vibe of the place is pretty cool for a bar. It's a bit dark and hard to see towards the middle and back of the bar…

The food: my wife and I got an order of mozzy sticks to split, which were pretty damn good. Yes, I'm putting in my 2 cents about mozzy sticks at a bar. Yes, there are good and BAD mozzy sticks.

Poor Herbie's is a standard bar, but it's location within Madison makes it a 3/5 for anyone nearby. You don't find solid, in-town bars too often!

  2. Loved the burger and fries.

  3. I must say the second time around I was rather disappointed with the burger and wings. The wings apparently are "amazing" based on the recommendations of the server. They are good but I have had much better wings. The sauce they give you is really good but they don't give you vege's like a typical restaurant. The burger this time was overcooked and for some reason they don't come with fries. Umm, sort of unusual. The service was spotty. My friend had the Kobe burger which he loved. He is such a finicky eater that I was shocked. For the most part the meal was good but just didn't live up to the expectations I had the second go round.

  4. First time visit, with a local.  While the turkey sandwich and sweet potato fries were recommended, I went with a cheese burger topped with bacon, lettuce, and tomato.  Cooked to order.  Perfect size.  Fries were good, too.

Great service.  Great vibe.  Cool place to hang out, while enjoying great food.

  5. if you are looking for good wings then look no further then Poor Herbies in Madison, NJ.

I really could not tell you much more about the menu but this is definitely a neighborhood pub with lots of regulars i have noticed. The burgers are very taste but sometimes i do forget to order fries because they do not come with the burger.

Basically I go here when I want good wings and they always satisfy. Good lunch spot or place to go on weekend  for brunch and maybe a bloody mary. I am craving their wings now, they are that good.

  6. I really wanted to like this place, but did not.  I had been a few times before for dinner or drinks, but have no recollection of the place, so gave it another shot.  For starters, I despise restaurants that save a buck by serving RC instead of Coke/Pepsi.  They sale for the same costs as the "better" brands and it is horrible.  This place chooses to serve RC.  Yuck.  The app we got, which was a weird name for boneless chicken wings, was essentially 2 Tyson chicken fingers with hot sauce poured on.  The blue cheese dressing was akin to watery bottled dressing with a few pieces of blue cheese on top.  The burgers were good, but we did NOT like the fact that for a $10 burger you did not get fries.  Also, I know this is picky, but…..Hunts Ketchup?  Seriously?  If they are cutting corners on things like the soda/ketchup, what other corners are being cut in the kitchen?

  7. When we walked in, we knew that the locals knew about this joint. Turns out, quite a few of them were sitting in the bar eating … bar food, effectively. More on that in a bit. But the locals here… mostly older locals. Didn't see many office workers or anything in here. Maybe we came at a bad time on a Thursday lunch? The U-shaped room has a bar in the inner bend as you enter.

The place isn't easily identified – you are better off looking for the flowers painted on the windows, because the text there is hard to read. There's no sign on the door to the left, but that's the main entry, and go in to the center to get seated (or drop yourself at the bar). Parking is a pain – one hour up front if you can get parking on Waverly.

Service was personable but slower than your average place. Not a fast food place, by all means, two burgers and fries took the better part of 30 minutes to prepare and get to us.

Water, came with ice and a lemon, that was a good start. I ordered a mozzarella and grilled mushroom burger, and my coworker and I split an order of the shoestring fries. The fries were exactly as ordered, nothing special but certainly not as salty as a McD's fries or bland as wedges would be.

The burger… well, I got a cheddar mushroom burger instead. Yes, I ordered mozzarella, but someone somewhere decided cheddar was better for me that day. I took it anyway. Still charged for the mozzarella, though, so that was nice. Simple burger is $8. Add a cheese, and you go up to nearly $9 for American/mozzarella/Cheddar/Swiss or $9.50 for bleu cheese. Comes with a pickle, bun, and small side of coleslaw (was okay, but warm, which was strange to me). Grilled mushrooms? Add $1.50. Tomatoes & lettuce, add $0.50, etc. etc. The burger… was okay. It wasn't as juicy as others (I suspect just cooked with less oil/butter), and the roll the bun was comprised of was grilled (which was nice) but a bit plain. Mushrooms were nicely cleaned and grilled, though, no out-of-can mushrooms here.

Took a request to actually get my water refilled rather than someone keeping an eye out on the patron's water supply.

The appetizers look pretty good, though. Maybe I'll try it here another time.

There's live music some nights, though.

  8. This place never changes.

Great local spot with a very timeless feel.  Go here for your Guiness and a shot.  Same bartender has been there for 10 years, and he's not bitter!  I couldn't believe it!  A semi-dive with the usual suspects of local drinkers as part of the decor, and the bartender wasn't a bitter jerk.

Even though I'm not local anymore, and no one knows me, I felt like I was – no one was vibing me for intruding on this very  local-feeling spot.  You can stop here and feIt's a great nightcap spot for any night of the week.
