Maybe its the loner in me or maybe its the fact that I'm a busy mom, but I kinda enjoy having a nice quiet lunch in my car by myself. If I'm running errands or on my way home from work and hungry, I don't mind stopping at Sonic and grabbing something to eat. I love the convenience of pulling up, parking, ordering, and having someone bring the food to me. The food itself? Eh, its alright. Not exactly the healthiest, but it gets the job done. I have found service at this location to be ok. They are usually quick and have never made a mistake with my order.
I remembered years ago when this Sonic Drive-In first opened. The line of cars going all the way back to the 46/23/80 juncture near Willowbrook Mall was a testament to how a little marketing and a touch of mystique can draw hundreds of people to a fast food chain to give it a try. Everyone was so excited at the prospect of a Sonic opening up so close that many people, including myself, fell to the trap of corporate scheming. They knew how to get my friends and I to come visit at all hours of the day AND night to get some chili cheese fries, Route 44 limeades and burger and dogs slathered with cheese. This place used to be the hangout for all the young kids in the area. But as time passed by this Sonic did not age gracefully. There is no longer a line that extends all the way to Willowbrook and the hours that the place is open is the same as fellow competitor's hours.
It has been years since my last visit but the opportunity came one Sunday morning as I was driving by and craving some french toast sticks. Having been away from Sonic for this long nostalgia took over. I was excited to taste the greasy, heart-clogging goodness once more. But all I got was a massive disappointment. I ordered the ultimate meat burrito with a side of tater tots and for good measure french toast sticks. The french toast, which I was craving, came out cold and soggy. The burrito fell apart as soon as I bit into it and the bacon inside tasted like salty cardboard. The tater tots were the only good thing about the meal. As the saying goes "time apart makes the heart grow fonder" but in this case time apart made me sadder. It's such a shame that all that's left of Sonic is my memory of it's bygone days. Maybe that's all I have to hold on to. I guess it'll have to do.
When this Sonic opened, the traffic backed out to the highway. I never chanced a visit, I hate waiting for fast food. When I finally stopped in, there was a lull in the traffic so service was fast.
I had the burger, fries and a cola since that should have been a snap for them to get right.
Wrong…
Burger dry and flavorless. Ordinary fries. The soda had way too much ice.
Disappointed and I have not gone back. I guess I should give them a second chance but their prices are a little higher than I'm used to.
Recommended only for the curious…
I'm not a fan of fast food so, I do have a bias in this review.
I come here just for the deserts which aren't too bad. Even if it's not busy the service is pretty slow, I'm only ordering ice cream why does it take so long.
I like coming here for Ice Cream cause it's like a Dairy Queen except you don't have to get out of your car.
The drive thru line was pretty long, in my opinion a good sign this place was going to be really good. I ordered fries & 2 dogs, 1 chili cheese, 1 chicago. They mistakenly gave me an order of mozzarella sticks. When I notified them about my mistake addition I was told I could keep them. They were probably the best mozzarella sticks ever, not sure why but they were really good, nicely breaded, crunchy and moist inside. Fries were good, nothing exciting, just fries. I ate chili cheese dog first, it was OK at best. Mushy hot dog, cheese wiz & obviously premade chili. Chicago dog was a little better although nothing great. Poppy seed bun, tomato, celery salt, pickle & hot pepper, same mushy hot dog. Coming from NYC i have a few rules, i will not eat at Olive Garden for Italian, Pizza Hut or Dominos for pizza and a chain (with the exception of Nathans) for hotdogs. I will make a second attempt at sonic as the drinks and burgers look pretty good, i'll just stand clear of the dogs.
I see a million sonic ads so when I went past today decided to pull in. I also remember when this place was impossible to get into, but no more. Came lunchtime on a Friday and there were 4 of us in the lot. Ordering went ok, food came in 10 minutes which was ok. This place feels like a dump though. Waitress was nice enough, but could tell she couldn't give two craps about my order. Food was totally average. Chili dog was dripping and soft, buffalo wings a little too chewy and tots with no ketchup is just wrong.
Won't be back.
Worst staff at a fast food place Ive ever encountered in my life. I also emailed the company and the never replied. The drink menu is good and the hotdogs are ok. The burgers are horrible.
I love Sonic and can't believe I haven't reviewed it already.
Stopped in today with my son who was in a hot dog mood. I don't like eating in my car, and it was a nice day so we just sat at the tables.
I've seen about 50 commercials for their Original Pretzel Dogs and had to try one…also got a NY Dog with kraut, spicy mustard and onions (looks like I better not kiss the wife). My son kept it simple and had two dogs with ketchup-yes ketchup…I don't want to hear about how only Commies eat hot dogs with ketchup-that's how he likes them. We also split a tater tots and a cherry lime-ade.
Yep, Sonic is a little pricey, but they make pretty decent dogs. Tots were great-just can't get enough of them. Cherry lime-ade was delicious, and my dogs were excellent. Bread was a little soggy on the NY dog, but they tasted great.
Ive eaten a LOT of hot dogs in my pursuit of the best dogs in NJ and holy crap the pretzel dog could be a top 5 candidate…I know, all you purists just rolled your eyes, but it's an awesome combination. Dog, pretzel bun, melted cheese and bacon?!? Are you kidding!!! How can that be anything but delicious?!?
