I was sad to see Bonao Cafe close down, but relieved to learn that they moved a few blocks away from the old location. This new spot, now called Higuey, is a straight up takeout joint, as opposed to their former sit-down restaurant.
Along with the name change, there has been a revamp of the menu to include more deli items (wraps, sandwiches) and even a few random Italian dishes (chicken Marsala, piccata, and lasagna). I have not tried any of these new additions yet, although I am very interested in rating their mofongo!
Higuey still serves breakfast food, and all the Dominican foods they used to have–although a few aren't listed on their menu. For example, my favorite, the pernil, is no longer featured on the takeout menu (although it does show penil as a catering item), but they still serve it. And the price ($7.50 for a generous portion which includes rice and beans) hasn't changed.
The service is still fast and friendly, the portions are still large, the prices are still modest, and the new place, although much smaller and not as nicely decorated, is clean. I hope Higuey is here to stay!
