If you're looking for a slow cooked, home style meal in the Bronx, then Country Thyme is your spot. Most patrons ordered takeout, but they have casual sit down seating as well as quick counter seating.
I had slow cooked beef with tomatoes, carrots, and peepers over spinach rich and cabbage. The rice was outstanding. It was very similar to plov/pilaf rice. You could tell it was cooked over a long period of time because the flavors married perfectly. I could have ate entire plate of the rice alone. The cabbage was very soft. It had the texture of a half caramelized onion without any of the poignant character of an onion. The beef was pretty tender. I found the vegetables cooked with the beef to be extremely tender. And of course, everything came together well with thyme.
The server suggested pairing the meal with one of their juices which was a good recommendation. I would advise against the fried dough balls unless you get them piping fresh.
