This is a literal hole-in-the-wall, so don't think you're coming here to sit down, unless you and your friend grab two of the stools by the window. Speaking as a Jamaican whose family is blessed with several outstanding cooks, it can be really difficult to find a Jamaican take-out place that delivers like my aunts and cousins and father, et. al.
Island Taste is some serious Jamaican food! You won't be eating quality like this on a regular basis unless you're making it yourself, or your family is. And it's great to know that I can get stew peas a la my papa, or curry goat a la my Aunt B. I've been making the journey here for several years–and so has my family when they're too tired to cook– because it's worth it.
A lot of the other spots in The Bronx that have great food, are constantly changing cooks/chefs, quickly going out of business, or having other unsavory events take place.
I've never been disappointed and have tried almost every lunch/dinner item on the menu. They also serve breakfast, but I loathe porridge (I know, wtf? Jamaica, please don't disown me!), and haven't been able to try the ackee, saltfish, or cook food. Prices are pretty standard for similar spots depending on your meat. SOUP every day. Chicken soup is excellent and Mannish Wata is nice.
Island Taste is bringing us the following amazing reasons to travel to 241 St:
