Grand Sichuan Eastern

“The menu/taste is very similar to my former favorite Sichuan place on 9thAv in Chelsea, however it's cleaner and MUCH more comfortable.”

“I like their pickled cabbage with fish soup, sautéed shanghai bok choi, authentic Sichuan fish fillet ( spicy, soupy, feeds 3 -4 ppl) and cumin flavored pork ( or any meat) is pretty good too.”

“The menu items range from typical Chinese menu items to pig intestines and conch, with ton of spices.”

  1. Went here with a group of 11 people for a big group lunch. They were able to accommodate us at a huge round table in the back. It was a totally ideal way to share a bunch of dishes family style. We got a bunch of the pork soup dumplings (awesome), some watercress and string beans (delicious), ma po tofu (spicy and tasty), some sort of chicken thing (also amazing and went super quick), and a whole fried fish (sub-par and covered in a lot of gel-like sauce).

It was a lovely break in the middle of the day and everything was fast and tasty. Definitely want to come here for a big group gathering again!

  2. My first dine in experience at Grand Sichuan Eastern was not bad at all.  I ordered the hot and sour soup with mild chicken and string beans w/brown rice. They give you plenty of food and the service was good.

  3. Got takeout from here…the food is rather mediocre (in both texture and flavor.) It will leave you full but still rather unsatisfied.

  4. Review for takeout/delivery only.

Grand Sichuan Eastern is far from my favorite place for Szechuan food, but it is cheap, filling, and satisfying for the price, and it happens to be the best option in the area. Everything's a little greasier than I typically would like, but sometimes it's suitable when you've been out late the previous night, heh.

My usual go-to is the shredded pork with dried bean curd lunch special, the Dan Dan noodles, Chong Qing chicken or the Singapore Mi Fun.  The lunch special comes with your choice of soda, soup, or vegetable roll, and choice of brown, white, or vegetable fried rice. Always gotta go with the vegetable fried rice. The dan dan noodles ain't the best, but they do put enough spice to make it flavorful, and the Singapore Mi Fun is always consistently pretty good.

It's important to think strategically when ordering takeout, because you have to take into account everything being packed into takeout containers. Peking duck or soup noodles might sound like the best thing on the menu, but I tend to go for dishes that don't really lose their optimal texture after sitting in takeout containers for half an hour. Dropping knowledge bombs all over.

Delivery times have been fine for the most part, and they usually always have my order ready within 10 minutes. I can't speak to the dine-in experience, although when I've seen the place during peak lunch/dinner hours, it's not very packed. Value, as previously mentioned, is pretty good, with the lunch specials at $7.50, and most other dishes around $10-15. I'd recommend getting 2 of the lunch specials and refrigerating the second one for later. That's just the cheap Asian in me talking though.

Will likely order from them again when I need some decent Szechuan food for a good value.

  5. Respectable sweet & sour chicken but I'd have liked more peppers in mine.  Also, service was a little slower than I'd have liked.  However, they did have some seating on a Saturday night without a 30+ minute wait & the food was pretty good.  I also noticed some items on their menu that I have not seen elsewhere so you have to give them some credit for the diversity of their cuisine.  Ambiance was very nice; no screaming kids.  I'd return.

  6. Quaint yet modern spot with quick service & good portions. One of the few Chinese spots where string beans instead of broccoli isn't "specialty" and cost more. My mom needed more seasoning but, because I'm not a salt person the "freshness" of the veggies wasn't an issue for me. The appetizers are pricey, when I try them I'll tell if they're worth it! I had the lunch special of chicken & stringbeans which came with white rice & a choice of soup/ eggroll. I got the wonton soup it was meh, I've had better but overall I enjoyed my take-out!

  7. It's all about ordering the right item on the menu! Despite my somewhat lukewarm experience at Grand Sichuan Eastern, I decided to give this place another try when I was craving something quick in the neighborhood…and I certainly am so happy about it as I will be frequenting this restaurant much more often!

I got the Sliced Pumpkin with Ginger and Scallion. Unlike the Pumpkin dish with "house special sauce" that was drenched in starchy brown sauce, this dish was much simpler, healthier, and tastier. Generous portions of sliced, sweet kabocha squash were cooked with ginger and scallion in light sauce. The sweet pumpkin and the slight bitterness of the ginger and scallion created an explosive flavor profile that I really enjoyed. With this dish alone, GSE has become my favorite Chinese restaurant in the city. If you love pumpkin, this dish is a MUST.

  8. This place is perfect for a greasy spoon Chinese bite. I ordered a General Tso's lunch special for takeaway. The spring roll was pale and languid. I personally like an explosion of crunch and heat. This was not that. It looked like it had never touched hot oil. The chicken breast tasted twice fried. It was crispy and clunky. The hunks were large and dry. The coating was caramelized batter, crispy and crunchy, heavy and the chicken was dry. I some siracha for a touch of spice because prior to that the chicken tasted of kettle corn. Surprisingly, the white rice was amazing. I probably will order again if I need a Chinese fix. At $7.50 for a lunch, the price was soo cheap that it was completely worth it. Children will love this place.  The decor is dark and gloomy, but it doesn't matter because it looks like most of their business is seamless or takeaway. They received an A for cleanliness which says a lot in NY.
