Read the great reviews so I had to check the place out last weekend. Really small place, just big enough for 3 customers to stand inside. If you don't speak Chinese, you can simply point to whatever you want.
They had to make my order fresh, so I had to wait a couple of minutes, there wasn't a line when I was there. I ordered the shrimp rice roll, a pork one and I had to try the popular curry fish balls with rice noodles. We ended up giving away the shrimp rice roll to L's nephew, but he seemed to enjoy it a lot since he's never had them before.
Our favorite had to be the curry fish balls with rice noodles. Good flavor, wasn't as mushy as the pork rice noodles.
My only issue is that once I had paid for my order, the guy taking the orders left to go outside and one of the two guys making the food had to take the money from incoming customers with his gloved hand. That kinda defeats the purpose of wearing gloves…. They basically cut strips of freshly made rice noodles into your container. One piece fell (not onto the floor), but the guy picked it up with the gloved hand (that touched money) and placed it with the batch of rice noodles for the next customer.
I know a lot of people might not be disturbed by that, but I am… Im a fan of their food, but I hope they learn to take off their gloves if they need to touch money or anything dirty…especially if the guy who takes the orders has to leave the shop.
At least they don't water down their sauces.
Ever since the disappearance of the tiny stalls under the LIRR tracks (easily one of the best stalls ever. RIP), I haven't been able to find Chee Cheong Fun (Rice Noodles with Sauce) until now. With the opening of Fu Yuan in flushing, I have finally been able to satisfy my childhood craving for this delicious dish.
Nestled between Dunkin Donuts and Coco, right off the Main Street 7 Station is Fu Yuan. What this stall lacks in size it makes up for in taste. There is no seating area, there's barely any ordering space. The lines to the register often sprawl out into the street, with waiting times easily reaching 5 minutes or more for their freshly made noodles.
I ordered my childhood classic Curry Fish Ball Rice Noodle with all the sauces. The noodles still retained their chewiness despite being covered in sauce and the fish balls definitely lent some bite to the dish. Although I'm not particularly sure what all the sauces they put in are, people with a peanut allergies should avoid the peanut sauce from being added in. My one qualm is that I wished they had more rice noodles, I could have even done with less fish balls for more rice noodles (thankfully I ordered two). The ones from the LIRR track used to be packed to the top with them.
If you're missing a childhood classic Fu Yuan definitely has the rice noodle fix you're craving. Just be prepared for the long line!
YES finally a place in Flushing for just cheung fun (rice rolls)!!!!!!! Tiny place, no seating, just order and go. I waited for 20 minutes because the lady in front of me ordered like 8 items and a tub of soy sauce. But I waited. And it was worth it.
I got the curry fishballs with cheung fun and all the sauces (except spicy) and shrimp rice rolls. They make their shrimp rice rolls on the spot, so you gotta wait. Wish they could just make a few beforehand so I can really just order and go. If you just get the curry fishballs & rice rolls, it's quick! Lesson learned.
It's right next to Dunkin Donuts on the block of CoCo.
Note: they're closed on Thursdays.
Located just a few doors down from the 7 train station on Main street, next to CoCo. There is no room for dine in, everything is for take out. Literally just a door and 4 ft into the store is the counter and the cooks.
I tried the rice roll with fish balls, congee with pork and preserved eggs, and beef rice roll. The beef rice roll was not the way Im used to from dim sum. It was scattered bits of beef and not in 3 clean segments. This was just average.
The congee lacked some salt, it looked like they make plain congee and just mix in the ingredients after the fact. So the flavor is not infused into the porridge.
The main star is the rice roll with fishball. Or as most know it as the yu dan chern fun! The rice noodle drowned in oyster sauce and peanut sauce. It is absolute heaven and Fu Yuan pulls it off just how I remembered it as a child.
Note: this is flushing, so likely someone will try to skip the line and shout their order. Feel free to remind them that there is a line and they need to wait.
Nostalgia.
Some of you folks have spaghetti and meatball, grandma's lasagna, grape soda, Mickey D's… And I have cheung fun. That slimy rice roll with fishball was my childhood growing up in Chinatown LES.
This Hong Kong street cart staple can be found at every street corner if you rewind 15 years, that sweet hoisin sauce coupled with peanut butter and oyster sauce is guuuuuuuuuuuuuud.
This lack of vocab is shameful, but the melt in your mouth cheung fun is SIMPLY BLISSFUL.
Fu Yuan, a tiny hole in the wall by the Main St station has got the art of cheung fun and sauce concoction down packed. I'm seizing from the way this little shack of a time machine brings me back 20 years. Toddler Yannie would tuck on her mommy's arm sleeves as she points at that Leen Jeh cart on Henry street.
Thank you Fu Yuan for the hypnotic therapy session. It's this humbling street food that reminds me of humanity in the hustle and bustle city that never sleeps.
Rec: default fishball and cheung fun over oyster sauce.
Their curry fishballs are amazing by the way, but I would get that alone and without the peanut, oyster sauce medley.
With AA plaza gone, downtown Main St has been really missing a good hole-in-the-wall snack pace like this.
The prices are ridiculously cheap, and the food abundant. There's a good variety of different snacks.
I tried a little of everything, and it was all quite good. Their rice noodle rolls are on point. They have all the fixings, so make sure to ask for all the sauces (unless you have a nut/peanut allergy- then skip the peanut sauce)
The only disappointment was the shrimp noodle rolls (蝦腸). It took about 8 minutes to make, and even though it was made fresh, the shrimp were overcooked and very dry. It was the only dish I didn't finish.
The store operation is tiny, literally a hole in the wall. There's only 3 guys behind the counter while supplies are rushed up from someone in the basement via a side door. You'd probably walk right by this place without noticing it, except there's always a huge line outside.
If there's no line/a short line, I'd definitely hit this pace up for snacks. As the temperature gets hotter though, I'm not so sure I'd be willing to wait outside that long. I was there with three people ahead of me and it still took twenty minutes to get to the font of the line.
Small 3 men shop. One makes the fresh rice rolls, one takes the order and the other preps and packs the order. Different types of steamed rice noodles, chee cheong fun, soup noodles, and congee. I ordered a small ham & egg and dried shrimp steamed rice noodles and a medium curry fish balls rice noodles with sauces. All for cheap! My favorite had to be the rice noodles with all the sauces. If you order the steam ones theres a wait. I probably waited about 15 mins for it. The texture was a little soft for me but still good.
Have been wanting to try out this place for quite a while now. A very awesome friend of mine knew and got it for me as a treat today 🙂 You know who you are!! You da best!!! The cheung fun is a little more on the chewy side but that's the way I like it prepared. Fish balls were great and the sauce was delicious without being too overpowering. In fact, I thought the perfect amount of sauce was drizzled on top! Prices are very cheap. I look forward to going back to Flushing and trying out all the other options that they have to offer!
