This is really 3.5 stars due to the service tonight from being incredibly short staffed. The wait between one thing to the next was very noticable and we had to beg anyone we could find to refill our water glasses. The food is still pretty great in my book based on taste and portion; combination dishes are great to share and there's nothing wrong with bringing home leftovers for lunch tomorrow.
Hawaiian beef kicks ass!
I've lived in the neighborhood my whole life and China New Star was always my go to Chinese restaurant for takeout or dine in. The place has looked the same for years, its decor is really outdated but I've never have a problem with the cleanness, and that's one of the most important things to me. I came in on Monday night and did the dinner for two for $40, you choose an option from group A and group B, and it also includes soup, and appetizer, rice and a dessert. We chose the chicken with broccoli and sesame chicken with brown rice as the entrees, we both also got a wonton soup and than these beef empanadas as an appetizer which were actually really good surprisingly. The food here is good, but I think the quality of it had changed in the past few years and it's just not the same. They do bring out a tea pot of Chinese tea to the table which I do love, and they have the BEST crunchy noodles that they bring to the table with hot mustard and duck sauce on the side.
For dessert they offered icecream or pineapple. I opted for the pineapple and it was pineapple from a can which I wasn't expecting. Overall the food and experience was good but I wouldn't be running to come back here.
The best Chinese food in Brooklyn, hands down. The dining area is spacious and clean; the waiters are very attentive from the time you sit down until the time you leave. Everything is fresh and steaming hot when it gets to you, but my favorites are: egg drop soup, pork lo mein, sesame chicken, general tso, and pork fried rice. Also, their duck sauce is AMAZING. I wish I knew the brand or recipe, because I could seriously eat it daily.
I almost gave China New Star a 4 star rating, because the location isn't very convenient and there's also a lack of public transportation within the vicinity. I have a car and parking is easy enough over there, but it makes it less of a "hey, it's 10pm and I'm hungry, let's go pick up some Chinese food" kind of place. So, if you don't have a car, keep the transportation thing in mind.
Stopped in to grab a bite before heading out for a few drinks.
I enjoyed some of the dishes we ordered. I particularly loved their fried noodle snack thingy with the choice of spicy or sweet sauce. I mixed them.
I also tried their LI ice tea. Loved it.
Our waiter was friendly.
The End
Can be dirty. Watch for foreign objects in the food (I had metal shavings from a can). Can't eat there anymore. Much better places down in little Chinatown, Ave U.
