I'm fairly skeptical of places that serve both Japanese and Chinese food. Typically, the larger the menu, the worse the food. Very surprisingly, Kitaku is one of those rare exceptions where quantity doesn't compromise quality.
Came here a couple of weeks ago when my family was in town. We were walking around the Astoria-Ditmars area looking for an Asian restaurant, when we happened upon Kitaku. We peeked in… and it was empty, never a good sign. Mind you, it was 5:30 on a Friday afternoon, but still… Even so, we bit the bullet and decided to give this place a shot. As we were seated, I was impressed with the space – clean, modern, with a chic sushi bar. Not a far cry from some of the trendier Asian spots in Manhattan.
There are separate menus for Japanese and Chinese food, and both are pretty overwhelming. Most of the gripes about this place on Yelp are with the lunch/box specials, so we stayed away from those. Ended up going with the Lemon Chicken, Beef Lo Mein, Happy Family, Teriyaki Salmon Bento Box, and a couple of rolls of specialty maki. I was expecting drab plating and drab flavors. Couldn't be more wrong. All the dishes were cleanly and artfully presented, the maki especially looked gorgeous. As for the flavors, aside from the Lo Mein being a bit too salty and oily, everything was on point. All the meats and seafood in the Happy Family tasted fresh. The Salmon Teriyaki was cooked just right and the sauce wasn't too overpowering. The Lemon Chicken was tender on the inside with a extra crunchy crust on the outside, and paired with a really nice lemon infused sweet and sour sauce. And even the maki were legit – fresh tuna and yellowtail with just the right proportion of rice. Good stuff.
And the service was great. Our waiter was attentive, friendly, and always right there to refill our waters. He even threw in a complementary plate of fruit at the end of our meal. I really appreciate those small gestures, they go a long way in my book. After all that food, the final bill only came out to $90, after tax and tip. Can't complain about that.
By no means is this one of the best Asian restaurants I've ever been to, but it's a great spot if you want quality, hit-the-spot sushi or Chinese that won't break the bank. Definitely adding this place into the rotation go-forward.
I was going out for sushi with a friend and we try to go to a different place every time. My sisters boyfriend recommended this place to me, so I went. He says it's amazing, and I see that my sister herself wrote a 5 star review, so maybe the night I went was an off night, but I can't give it any more then 3 stars, and that's a stretch.
The ambience was nice, dark and mildly intimate, and the service was fine, but at the end of the day, the service isn't the most important thing- the food is.
And I was not satisfied with my food.
I ordered two sushi rolls, Philadelphia and Avocado. They both tasted really weird. There were seeds on my avocado roll which just didn't belong there at all, and the salmon tasted like.. I don't know. Something unpleasant. My friend said it tasted like onions, so we'll go with that. The salmon tasted like onions.
It turned me off completely and was a waste of money for me.
The food deserves 2 stars, and the ambience helped bump it up to 3.
Maybe I'll try it again if someone else is buying it, but it was a total miss for me. Sorry.
We had to go out of our way to find it because it is on that street that gets overshadowed by Ditmars and I am glad we did. They have some intense rolls man. Delicious apps and sushi. Very fresh and relatively affordable. They are generous with their portions as well.
Happy to have eaten here.
Melrissa was our server an absolute doll!
Today we decided to try
Bbq squid appetizer I didn't know what to expect it was good but I wish it was grilled ( it maybe was on flat top)
Kani salad. Has some kick to it ate too fast to provide a photo
American dream roll it was good had a lot of crunchies on it. This was a warm roll.
Crazy tuna roll delicious. Just had to take off jalapeños!
Sesame chicken great amount of chicken!
And pork fried rice
( we were starving)
Our server was super sweet even though the place was not busy she was very attentive and was constantly refilling out water glasses. The food was delicious! It's good if you come here and one person wants sushi the other person can order Chinese food. Makes everyone happy.
I thought it was pretty cool they had some techno / house music playing!
I like what I see so far so this review is subject to change. We ordered from the Japanese menu and everything was delish. I wish I had ordered one of their sushi rolls looking at how pretty they craft them but never the less, our Gyoza was tasty and crispy, our bento was oishii and filling, and the katsu don was good (though the pork batter could have been better). A slight turn off was the total on our bill, the dishes were slightly more expensive than neighboring restaurants. Will be returning to sample the Chinese menu next time, hopefully with more pictures as well~
I've tried their lunch special, chicken and baby shrimp w/ mixed vegetables and brown rice. For Chinese take-out, the portions were meager and who gets stingy with veggies, I ask? Flavor was lacking. Had the steamed veggie dumplings which left so much to be desired. The dough was too thick and unforgiving. Left a bad after taste.
I may or may not give them another chance. TBD
