WORST DELIVERY EXPERIENCE EVER!!!! Ordered food at 7:15, got the seamless confirmation at 7:30pm. At 9:30pm, food still hadn't arrived yet and after calling three times, I was told the "driver was on his way" for over an hour! If they can't keep up with orders they shouldn't take them.We ended up having to cancel and getting take-out at a local place instead…This is at 10pm mind you! I will NEVER order from this place again. Ever.
I'm not sure what took me so long to try Colala…had walked by it for years. Anyway, went in one day with bf and our meal was awesome. There is a huge menu which you'll find is both super meat and veggie friendly. I'm a huge fan of their soups. I was digging my vegetable soup so much, I ordered one to go before we left.
The vibe is super cozy and not hurried. Check it out.
Do yourself a favor. Save your money and stay at home and order from your Chinese delivery spot at home. After some failed attempts at trying to order some Greek food from Teddy's, we decided to traipse over to Washington Ave. We were shocked that Teddy was now Colala, but we were there and decided to get a bottle from the liquor store next door since it's a BYOB spot.
It's a nice size restaurant with a mix of Japanese and Chinese food and because of this, the menu is about 30 pages long. Well not quite that long but it can be overwhelming but do not fear because they don't have any spectacular, new, and innovative dishes. It's your standard Chinese and Japanese fare.
We had quite a bit of a spread: ribs, chicken wings, shumai, rolls, pork and mixed vegetables, and lo mein. They forgot to keep the meat on the ribs, chicken was flavorless, rolls were fine, pork was really doused with sauce, and the lo mein tasted like boiled noodles drizzled with oil.
The best part of the night was watching a really interesting couple's interaction. Her bra ended up on the table by the end of the night. That kind of sighting is certainly not guaranteed, so just skip this place for sure.
It is a great mystery how anybody of sound and rational mind could:
a) Order Japanese food (esp sushi) at a Japanese / Chinese restaurant.
b) Order Chinese food at a Japanese / Chinese restaurant.
I was expecting bad food, and Colala did not disappoint me.
First a bit of history. The restaurant at this location before Colala was named Teddy's. While the owner and staff at Teddy's were really friendly and pleasant to deal with, the food was seriously awful. I mean, perhaps one of the worst restaurants I've ever witnessed in my life. While Colala does not best the suckage of Teddy's, it tries very hard to (and, fortunately for Colala, fails, but only to a point). However, Colala sucks at sucking, and they get 2 out of 5 stars from me. Note: I refuse to eat raw fish from an Asian fusion restaurant, as would any sane person.
We will order here once or twice more. If the food doesn't improve drastically, I'm changing my rating to 1 and never eating here again.
Appetizer
=======
BBQ Spare Ribs: B-
Very low quality meat: Tough and stringy. Not fatty enough. Too sweet.
Chicken Wings: C+
Tasteless. So small they were probably the wings of little baby chicks.
Shrimp Toast: B-
Nice strong ginger flavor, but wasn't shrimpy enough. I wish they were bigger; too much surface-to-volume ratio.
Soup
====
Hot and Sour Soup: B-
My expectations of hot and sour soup (HSS) has been diminishing. At one point in my life this would've scored a C, but I've had such horrendous HSS lately that this was a relief. At least there was some tofu and shitake mushrooms. A bit spicy, but not enough. Needed more black pepper as well as much more vinegar. Not sour enough.
Fried Rice:
========
Pork Fried Rice: D
This could very well be the worst fried rice I've ever had in my life. I would be hard pressed to tell you the difference between this fried rice and plain white rice.
Combination Plates
==============
Sesame Chicken: B-
Sesame chicken is always sweet, which is not really my bag, but I can appreciate it for what it is. The outside crust was too soft and the inside chicken was too dry.
Don't know why this place has so few stars. Went with four others and everyone enjoyed their meal. We had just come from the Brooklyn Museum and wanted food fast. The decor isn't too impressive but they were pretty speedy. I give it 3 stars because it's not amazing but it was ok.
I got the vegetarian sushi plate and was pleasantly surprised at the variety. They had a nice mango one I didn't expect. The meal came with the salad and I actually kept the leftover dressing to out on the sushi pieces to give more flavor. Maybe they should consider a little extra sauce on their veg sushi pieces.
Oh, their menu is also just way too long. All of us had trouble deciding on what to order. I'd suggest cutting down on the items being offered.
The food honestly is not very good here but it is cheap and delivers to my apartment. They have bubble tea but honestly that isn't very good either. I will probably order in something else next time or just go out and find something different.
Before I even started this review, I just have to laugh. Get ready for a ridiculous story, folks.
We walk in, are promptly seated and begin to order. It's right after the Target First Saturdays at the Brooklyn Museum, so it's packed. Our service was decent enough, although I don't like being pestered before I order and then basically ignored during the meal when I need napkins and the like (but I digress)….
I ordered the tofu teriyaki and one of my friends ordered the chicken teriyaki. My tofu was slightly too soft for anyone's taste but I just kept it moving because it was edible. My friend's meal on the other hand was way overcooked – she couldn't even chew her chicken!
We call the waitress over and she says she will get the manager, who agrees very politely to change the order, and so my friend gets lo mein….all is well or so we thought.
The check comes and we notice that we are being charged for the chicken teriyaki when my friend didn't even eat it and the lo mein was $4 cheaper. The waitress comes over and makes a big deal about changing the check and says that she cant do it. We ask for the manager. She says she'll go talk to the manager and then comes back 2 minutes later, saying that because the chef's had to make it, we will be charged for it. Bitch, what? She proceeds to lie to our faces and say the manager said no, when the manager was the one to help out in the first place.
The manager finally comes over, apologizes for the reckless waitress and then changes our check in a matter of seconds! was that so hard? We then leave, still laughing that this waitress just lied to us over something so simple.
Never again, Colala.
The place is a little loud and they don't tame their roust customers. The neighborhood is fairly changing in demographics . The food is fresh I had a bento box with salmon teriyaki and it was very filling. The waitress on the other hand sucked. I had to call her for a fork for water … She just sucked. The lighting was dim a little too dim if you asked me. It was fairly clean and spacious. I would go back but I wish the staff was better.
