Jade Island

“Decked out to the 9s, they had glowing blowfish lamps, bamboo little thatch roofs over the buffet tables, and the waiters were in hawaii shirts.”

“I also ordered the Coconut Kiss as well (it comes in a fake coconut glass but don't judge it by that it has real fruit cocktail on top with the little umbrella).”

“It's like a combination of Chinese and Polynesian fare that satisfies the need for greasy food with exotic flavors.”

  1. This place is very outdated, but the food is pretty good. I had the fried dumplings and General Chicken. The portions are a nice size. The booths are a little tight and staff is very attentive. You also get tea and noodles with your meal. They recently added a sushi bar as well. Nothing to brag about, but nothing to hate either.

  2. "Aruba, Jamaica, ooh I wanna take ya
Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama
    Key Largo, Montego,
    baby why don't we go,
    Jamaica

    Off the Florida Keys
    there's a place called Kokomo
    That's where you wanna go
to get away from it all
    Bodies in the sand,
tropical drink melting in your hand
    We'll be falling in love
to the rhythm of a steel drum band
    Down in Kokomo"

The lyrics from the Beach Boys "Kokomo" sum it up nicely.

Every few years the whole Tiki thing comes back and thats the "underground" fad.  This place has transcended many of them.  It not some hipster place repurposing stuff to look old…it is old.  Cant believe I havnt written a review about it yet.  Strong, fruity drinks that people from all over the 5 boroughs come to guzzle.  Still has that old school feel even though the front has been redone.  Tony Bordain brought the Immortal David Jahansen (a S.I. native) here on a TV show.  It upped the hip factor a tad but its still a hidden gem.

Until me meet again:  Hapa haole

  3. You walk in and it'll remind you of an old want to be Polynesian chinese restaurant. The food is ok, not the best. It's very greasy and bland. They need to add some flair, spice and liveliness to the food.
This restaurant has been here as long as I've been in SI….30+ years and nothing really has changed at all. Not even the shirts they've been wearing for decades, as well as the ambiance. I kid you not.

The entire restaurant needs a makeover and the waiters as well. All waiters are male and they need to be more friendly and smile.

  4. Their fried wonton chips are exceptional. Watch out for their perfectly balanced sweet and sour dipping sauce for them, though, if you get it on your keno card it won't go through the machine!

As you can tell by the above paragraph, we were possibly over-served by our new best friend Johnny on a recent trip to Jade Island. And guess what? Each drink was as tiki as it gets: brightly-coloured sugar booze in ceramics with tiny umbrellas.

If you like fun, corner tiki bars tucked into Chinese restaurants in parking lots in the suburbs, even for a lark, this place is for you!

  5. Eh. I heard all the hype about this place and it's not that great. Me and my friend came all excited because we see a lot of our friends go, and we were disappointed. I got sushi, spicy tuna roll, and it wasn't even that great. I've had much better. My friend wasn't satisfied with her meal either. Our waiter was in La-La land and not attentive. The decor is so tacky as well it's beach theme all over. But it looks so old. I wouldn't go back.

  6. Oh Anthony Bourdain I HATE YOU!  On his show No reservations, he does a show showcasing the Best food of the boroughs and when highlighting Staten Island, he concentrates on Jade Island?!  Really Bourdain, I could throw something at you! smh

Jade Island is not authentic chinese food but rather polynesian.  It's a bit tacky with the servers adorned in hawaiian button up shirts, hawaiian posters dating back to the 90s or something (I really don't think they've ever been changed), hawaiian themed.  But if you like those fruitty flaming drinks, this is the place.  Not bad but not too strong either so be sure to order another shot to add.  Food is decent but if you want chinese, there's better chinese and god dammit Bourdain, there are much better places that embody the Staten Island Palatte, you idiot.  smh.  Rant done.

  7. Oh Jade Island. You sure have stuck around throughout the years.

This Tiki bar and restaurant has been on Staten Island since I was young- and I'm 31!

I've actually only had drinks here, but for the love of God, ask them to put less sweet stuff in the tiki drinks. The sugar can kill you. Maybe just get a gin and tonic in the tiki glass and call it a day.

  8. I'm a total dork. I wanted to ride the Staten Island express bus for fun.

So when my friends and I wound up at the mall, one of us suggested Chinese. I kind of expected a small, takeout joint, but when he took us to the strip mall behind the big mall and I saw the sign that said "Cocktails," I was like …. what?

We were instantly transported to the 1980s. A dark, spacious restaurant with a tropical motif, Hawaiian shirts, and sugary drinks— this is the stuff my parents wax nostalgic about! I admit, I was pretty impressed. I'm all about old-school stuff, even if it's kitschy.

The menu is small and includes your Americanized Chinese favorites, I had an impressive chop suey with a ton of veggies that wasn't overwhelmingly salty. But… we have to talk about the fried noodles! Wide, fried, and easy to slide (into your mouth)… they were amazing, especially accompanied by the duck sauce.

The food was good, but what makes this place about a 6 on the "Is It Worth the Trip Scale" is the decor. I really, really like it. I'd return!
