Premier Cafe

“We originally came to this part of town to go to Carnegie's, but the line was long and so we ventured next door.”

“There tend to be a lot of tourists because of the mid-range hotels in the area, but these guys get them in and out and don't let them clog up the works – like good new yorkers, keep the line moving!”

“Both times, they remembered our order and remembered how we take our coffee (4 total).”

  1. When you think New York, you think New York deli.  And the Premier Café doesn't disappoint.  It is located right next door to the much more famous Carnegie deli, but it is significantly cheaper and it offers all the deli standbys at cheaper prices.  Plus you won't have to wait in line.

The Premier is combination bodega, deli, short order diner, greek restaurant, and sandwich shop.  The desserts are particularly good and I'm a fan of the deli sandwiches.   I can't wait to go back and try the Greek food.

Oh yeah, they have beer, too!

  2. Asked for a Tuna Melt with cheddar cheese.  What I got was a cold tuna sandwich with American cheese.  Before the cashier bagged it I noticed it looked cold and she assured me it was hot.  Of course I didn't check for myself until I was back in the office and it was too late.

Even if I wanted a cold tuna sandwich this wouldn't have been a good one.

Definitely DO NOT recommend, especially with so many other options around.

  3. We were considering going to Carnegie Deli next door, but then saw the prices there, were overcome with sticker shock and decided to come here to Premier Deli instead.

It was around 11:30 on a Saturday night when we stopped here, there was no line at the counter, we placed our orders, paid, and our food was heated and ready relatively quickly.  There was a bit of a language barrier when I placed my order, as the gent behind the counter had a thick Spanish accent and was a bit difficult to understand, but there was no problem once I got to the cashier.

I had a ham and cheese croissant and a bottle of juice, total was $13, there were 3 tables still open and we were both happy with our food.  This place did fill up quickly with people placing "to go" orders shortly after we arrived for some reason.

  4. Tried them this morning for breakfast since the two other cheap options near my office have been breakfast fail blogs of late, and I wasn't about to pay the prices at Astro or Park Cafe, or have someone deliver to me in this monsoon.

Glad I did!  Generous portions, good flavor (especially the hash browns), 7-grain toast option, and under $10 for the lot.  Only demerits are that they're yet another place who just plop your omelette add-ons on top of the omelette.  Fortunately, the cheese was inside…and next time I know to ask that they put it inside.  The bread is also MASSIVELY buttered (fine by this big ole Pennsylvania boy….but won't be to everyone's liking).

Methinks I'll keep them as my new breakfast treat option…and might go back to trying them for lunch!

ps – those desserts looked extraordinary in the case….hmmm…..

  5. Visiting from California, and this deli was pretty good, but nothing stood out.

My mom and I visited in the morning, and we ordered the ham and cheese croissant and an omelette that came with potatoes and toast. The croissant was a little too salty for my taste, but the omelette was pretty good. Portions are really big, if that's what you're looking for.

The line moved fairly quickly, and the eating area upstairs is nice and clean. Overall, not bad.

  6. This deli was close to the hotel i stayed at so we decided to stop in since it was cold and the weather was cold to go far. The food was delicious and i would def go back again and try something else

  7. The cheesecake from here was delicious. We just don't get flavor like this outside of New York. Slightly expensive for a not so big slice. The bakery across the street has a much larger slice for $10. I prefer something a bit more fluffy but this got the job done. Would stop by again next time I'm in the city.

  8. I love this deli. During my visit in NYC I was looking for a nice place where I could order breakfast on lunch that offered an array of options, without spending as much money or time as you would in a real restaurant.

Service is astonishingly fast. You grab your drinks or dessert in the rear fridge, then you choose your plate, sandwich, wrap or meal of the day in the counter. There are enough options like eggs with bacon, ham and cheese croissants, chicken, tuna and pastrami sandwiches and vegan friendly picks.
The stuff is friendly and abundant. There wasn't delay even in the busiest time of the day.

On the first floor there is a nice dinning area with enough room, big screen TV, wifi (ask for the password at the register) and 2 individual bathrooms.

If your want to drink a brewed Coffee I'm afraid it was a little watered down compared to similar value options elsewhere, so stick to hot chocolate if you want a hot drink.

Recommended for travelers visiting NYC on a budget.
