People who know me, know my affinity for Indian food. If there is a food cart selling burgers and another selling samosas, I'm going to the latter. Food court Indian is the allure that exceeds almost all of my other cravings in any given food court. But Cafe Spice Express was nothing more than disappointing, if not some of the worst Indian food I've had.
I understand the GC food is going to be spendier, but higher prices should command a certain quality of food, which Cafe Spice can't seem to execute. It's already very difficult for me to pay top dollar for Indian food, but it's even worse to get stuff that is barely edible. Most of the curries here are watered down and lack a lot of spice or flavor. The combos aren't exactly a deal at $10+ each and the Roomali Rolls are nasty.
Service is about as bad as the food. The guys working behind the counter were very rude, asking people in line, "What do you want?!" I feel bad for Grand Central visitors coming here, New Yorkers already get a bad rap for being impolite, but it's places like Cafe Spice that actually deserve it.
Some of the most bland Indian food I ever had. I had their Chicken Tikka Masala and it was just ok and didn't have much flavor to it. The chicken portion was very small although the plate was filled with rice. I also tried the Saag Paneer and it was way too bland. No taste at all. After my meal, I almost forgot that I had Indian food (yes, that's how bland the food was).
After me and my friend were in search for the GNC located in Grand Central Terminal and it turns out that it has closed #bummer
We had 40 mins left of our lunch break so we grabbed lunch in the dining concourse. My friend frequently eats at Café Spice and I was craving for something different that I normally eat on my break.
I ordered a combo of Lamb Vindaloo and Chili Chicken with white rice…didn't get anything to drink since it cost me $12.52 holy moly that's killing my budget lol
Luckily I found a table for us as someone was about to bounce. The containers seriously needs to change because too much rice and not enough meat as I am a carnivore…you know =)
My friend is vegetarian so good thing they have a lot of vegetarian friendly dishes and I did try some of hers but forgot to try the Vegetable Biryani.
I can't eat it every day because its giving me the ITIS of being too stuff hahahah!
It is a popular lunch spot as a huge line formed after we paid for our food!
Just insanely over priced. Naan (bread) is tough and stale, each of their chicken dishes I've had were fatty, heavy on sauce, lite on meat.. A medium sized takeout container will have a ladle of entree with the rest filled with a cheap "salad" of wilted iceberg lettuce and red onion and white rice.. For that and a soda you pay about $15.
A sad gouge, poor quality and the perfect example of an owner caring more about grabbing money than they do about quality food and repeat business…. and that makes me sad. Avoid this place.
good meal on the go. in that sense, it's a destination eatery. if you're on the run to catch a train, cafe spice works just fine. a generous side of rice is only $2.75 and with a side of veggies ($6.50), that's plenty for a $10 meal. the fried items are ok but they do get a little soggy from sitting around.
we are now fans of the $9.25 combo, which gives you two sides and a nice helping of the delicious basmati rice. the nan, for $1.95, comes wrapped in aluminum foil. everything travels well for the train ride home to the 'burbs.
i am a huge fan of chicken tikka masala and what i tasted was not it. their chicken curry was actually pretty good (surprisingly) but because i had my hopes set on having delicious indian food for dinner, i was so disappointed! the sauce had a slightly tangy sweetness that i've never tasted before (maybe even a bit sour?? i can't place my finger on it) although this stall is conveniently located in grand central and the workers serve and move you along ever so efficiently, i don't think i'll be coming here again for my favorite indian dish.
Quick take out Indian at Grand Central's Dining area. Very filling and tasty. I had the chicken tikka masala with palak paneer and a piece of naan and rice. Gut busting but so good. Spicy like I asked for and delicious. They are really fast and the wait isn't too bad even at peak times. Yum!!
I'd go here over that damn Eat A Pita, but if I had more time, I'd go elsewhere to get my "Sorry, I'm eating fragrant food on the train…GET OVER IT!" dinner.
But, still…
They had Saag Paneer with basmati rice and "salad" (…yeah, a few shreds of pale lettuce and a chunk or two of tomato) for about $9.50. Being the cheese fanatic we all pretend not to be, I really just ordered this for the paneer. I won't even mince words. It's certainly decent. Not bad at all. Above all, it's filling. I want to be sustained on those 2 hours between the city and Wassaic, as my dear mother usually has a nice…box of cereal waiting for me at my parents' house. The Saag Paneer here certainly does the trick!
The nice man behind the counter threw in a few free containers of dipping sauces, calling it a "souvenir" whilst winking at me. Since I had changed out of my work clothes prior to going to Grand Central and was walking around in my raggy college hoodie and black leggings, lugging around my overstuffed North Face backpack, I must have looked like a tourist that would be impressed with something like that.
Ehhh. I was, regardless. Haaa.
(I just like free condiments.)
