2.5 stars. 2 stars for food quality and a half star for this restaurant bringing in another rare option to the Journal Square area, rounded up.
Located in a back corner of the Fine and Fare Supermarket across from White Castle, Jersey Falafel offers a wide variety of dishes at fair prices.
Unfortunately, its chicken and rice dish, which Jersey Falafel claims to be in the same "New York Style" pitched by the Halal food cart just steps away, can only be described as "fair" as well.
The chicken, while tasty in itself due to what appears to be the use of dark meat, is covered by a thin white sauce that is completely tasteless. My use of the words "what appears to be" is intentional; I was not able to discern the type of chicken utilized in the dish because the chicken was minced. The tiny pieces of chicken, when gathered together, does provide the illusion that a large portion of the protein is included. However, a keen observer will notice that only one layer of this minced chicken is provided, with rice being the main component of the dish.
I've ordered their chicken rice dish three times thus far, only to have the same unsatisfactory experience each time.
Perhaps other dishes at this establishment are of better quality than their rendition of what is supposed to be a staple at restaurants similar to this one. Should I encounter one or more such dishes, I will update this review accordingly.
In the meantime, I will continue my patronage of the Halal cart across the street.
