  1. Such a cute little gem!  Recently had brunch here and would definitely return for a 2nd round.

While Parlay is nestled in a very quiet street near Sunset Park, it stood out among its neighboring worn-down shops with a clean design. Some say it's a trend movement to overtake the used-to-be low income hood with newly hipster bound tenants; but pretty sure some of my fellow Brooklynites welcome the changing landscape.

Self Service: order your food (menu written on the chalk board), if it's to-go, take a seat & your cashier/server/barista will call for you; if it's coffee, she will make it on the spot.

There are about 5 tables for patrons. We were eating in, so we placed our order, paid and took a seat.  Our wonderful cashier/server/barista brought our coffee & food to us.  Sugar/milk are self serve right by the counter.

We got a latte & cappuccino, both came with a little foamy heart, never get bored of seeing this cute stuff!
Spinach & cheese omelette, a side of bacon, banana pancakes w homefries (over fruits, I'm a carb lover!). I loved my banana pancakes – it was perfectly sweet, balanced and not overwhelmed by the bananas, plus it was cooked perfectly fluffy with crispy edges!  My eating buddy enjoyed his omelette, it was well seasoned and not over powered by the cheese.  My fav though was the deliciously AWESOME Home-Freaking Fries! It was perfectly cooked – crispy all around but soft inside with loaded tastes of the infused peppers & onions.

The only thing I would change is maybe pull down the shades a bit… The mighty sun practically burned a hole in my back…!  Sit away from the window but kind of odd to stare out onto the empty streets.

I also noticed other patrons didn't tip the cashier/server/barista – NOT nice you cheapo!!  She was the only one working and performed all 3 functions amazingly! So be kind to your multi-tasking cashier/server/barista! GOOD KARMA!

  2. Parley is a fairly new breakfast-brunch spot in the outskirts of Brooklyn Chinatown in Sunset Park. This place brings a refreshing unique breakfast experience to the immediate area full of Chinese bakeries. I happened to be home in Brooklyn this weekend so this was a great opportunity for us to try this place today! Yes, I grew up in Brooklyn all my life before moving to Queens!

My siblings and I ventured about half a mile away from our home and got here just before it got crowded. Decor is very hippy with wooden tables, benches, chairs, and seating at the bar. We started with a regular Latte and Matcha Latte. Both cups had a heart as their latte art. They did not add any sugar so you can add some if you like.

We got the Sweet Potato Fries with Sriracha Mayo. Fries came out hot and super crispy!

Our siblings ordered a variety of items such as the Eggs Benedict, French Toast, and Pulled Pork Sandwich.

Eggs Benedict was a traditional dish. English muffin with poached egg and Canadian bacon topped with hollandaise sauce. I did love that the sauce was not too heavy. Poached eggs are perfectly cooked for the yolk was still runny and oozing out! Eggs Royale (Poached Eggs with Smoked Salmon) and Eggs Florentine (Poached Eggs with Spinach) are both variations of the eggs benedict and great choices that are also available here! Egg dishes all come with a side of home fries!

French Toast is a smaller dish for anyone who isn't that hungry. Tastes very homemade if that's what you like. Two slices of french toast with a fruit salad on the side – grapes, honeydew, strawberries, and oranges. This dish is okay.

Pulled Pork Sandwich was a stunning beauty! A huge layer of pulled pork meat in between seasame brioche buns. I loved how flavorful the pork was and the bread was nicely charred. It was a bit messy to eat but it was really worth it!

Not bad for the first gourmet cafe comeback in Brooklyn – Chinatown!

  3. I called in an order, and picked it up.  Simply said the Bacon Egg N Cheese with Arugula was AbFab.   So Delicious. If such an important staple as a Brekfix sandwich is done this well, it has to be indicative of the quality of the rest of their dishes..  The Cafe/Restaurant was very welcoming & clean inside. It was not packed at 10:45am on a Sunday, so it could be a down-low brunch spot for people like me that are up early on the weekends..The service was friendly with a smile.   I will definitely be back to eat-in at Breakfast and/or Lunch, maybe even with laptop to get some work done.  It's on the quiet beginning of 8th ave after the south end of Greenwood Cemetary, but it's breakfast sandwich was well worth the journey north of 65th st.

  4. This place doesn't fit into the neighborhood at all – and that's a good thing! Don't get me wrong; Asian food is great, but a little diversity is even better. And that's what Parlay brings to the table (pun intended).

Everything I've tried there is very good. Oh, and the sriracha grilled cheese at $3.50. Ridic! It's almost like why bother making it at home? But what I come here for is Mama's Malay meal. That's the chicken curry with potatoes and a side of roti. Yes, it's Asian. Fine. But it's about the best damn Malay chicken curry I've found in the city to date. The chicken's super tender and the sauce is very flavorful. The roti is like adding angels to heaven. Deliciously, flaky, slightly buttery angels.

Even if you opt for something else, you can't go wrong. My husband loves their brisket (and I have to agree that they do a good job). The burger is solid, as is just about everything else we've tried.

And the atmosphere feels homey. The place has a very intimate, industrial feel to it. Despite being industrial, it feels more warm than cold. Records behind the counter add a bit of a hipster funk vibe to the joint. If you're in the area (or even a couple neighborhoods away), this is a can't-miss.

  5. Very small cafe so id imagine it'd be extremely nice to hangout on the weekdays. Came for a sunday brunch n i only waited 20mins. Service is good and food prices are reasonable. And food was great. I shared 3 dishes with my boyfriend n only wished my belly was bigger for those banana pancakes. Our main dilemma when walking in was deciding between the pulled pork or the brisket.. so what did we do? We ordered both. The pulled pork was better in my opinion but my boyfriend liked the brisket sandwich more. While the pulled pork came on top a potatoe bun, the brisket has a bonus of being on a crusty butter toast. Brisket also had more flavor, but a bit dry in my opinion compared to the pork. But all in all, theyre both extremely good. Even better than some all american bbq places i been to.

We had also had a mushrm omelette and i liked that it came with a good amount of mushrm. Star of the show was definitely the sweet potatoe fries. Theyre light on the inside, crispy on the outside, irresistible. And what makes it better is that it comes with a side of siracha mayo.

I promise I'll be back to try those banana pancakes.

  6. I've been brunching around my neighborhood a lot lately. Once in awhile I decide that I'm feeling lazy and don't want to walk anywhere, so I take that opportunity to get in my car and try a new place that I wouldn't usually walk to. Last week, Parlay was that place.

I was surprised to find such a cute little (emphasis on little) spot in Sunset Park's Chinatown. Back to the "little" aspect…there were only a few tables at this place. So few in fact that I don't know if I would even call it a restaurant. If you were asking me, which you probably shouldn't, I'd go with a cafe.

For a "cafe," I'm happy to say that there was a nice brunch selection. I'm also happy to say that it is served all day. Who doesn't love brunch all day? No seriously, who? No one! That's who.

I got a mushroom omelet with cheese and bacon (duh) which came with a side of home fries. The omelet was just alright. It was clear that the bacon and mushrooms had been thrown into the omelet after the eggs because the bacon wasn't crisp and the mushrooms were wet and soft, also telling me that they weren't fresh. Bummer! The home fries on the other hand were crispy and well seasoned.

My date got a grilled cheese with avocado and a side of sweet potato fries. She really liked the crispy grilled cheese, but sadly she did not get her fries. If you've ever been to a restaurant with me and the waiter does not WRITE DOWN MY ORDER ON A PIECE OF PAPER (or an iPad, a phone, or any way to actually remember it), you will ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS hear me complain about it. You are not a robot, you are a human being who has a lot of things to remember. JUST WRITE IT DOWN! (Whew…ok I'm fine..).

Actually, one more thing about that. Then I promise I'll shut up. Whenever someone forgets something on an order, 9 times out of 10, I will not remind my waiter. Because of this, everyone suffers. I suffer because I never got to taste sweet potato fries that may have boosted my review and made my tummy happy inside, and the restaurant suffers because I'm spending less money so my waiter gets less of a tip and then again with the lesser review. This may make me an asshole, but I have a job, and my job is not to remind you of what your job entails. Just do us all a favor and write it down.

  7. Parlay is one of those unassuming places which can easily be missed. Yelp convinced me to give them a try. We sat down and ordered coffees. It took a while to fill that order. We needed to get up to get the milk and sugar from the to-go station. We then ordered a grilled cheese sandwich, eggs Benedict & french toast. Other than the egg whites being under-cooked, everything else was tasty. It would have been nice to have been asked about a refill on the coffee. I'll give them another try, someday.

  8. The concept is great. The atmosphere is great. The space is great.

I have seen Parlay in passing many times and have always had that little voice in my head say, how good could it be if it's bordering Sunset Park and Boro Park.

Well, today I decided to give it a try. My friend and I went for breakfast. Upon walking In I was greated by a friendly waitress who brought menus and water to the table. She gave us a couple of minutes to decide what we wanted and came back right away to take the order and serve us coffee.

I think the coffee was alright. I was weirded out by it being served in a black mug because without the milk it was an awkward sight.

We ordered the eggs benedict, grilled cheese, and French toast. I asked the waitress if she could add ketchup to the grilled cheese — well, I have never seen someone make that much of a fuss —. First she said no, then she asked the woman behind the counter, then she went to the kitchen and finally she came back and said yes. That was weird.

Anyhow, the French toast was tasty, soft and perfectly fried served with seasonal fruits. But the eggs benedict, although tasty, had an undercooked egg. That wasn't pleasant. The grilled cheese with the ketchup inside was the highlight. Loved that it was on sourdough and toasted so perfectly. Yum.

Overall we had a pleasant experience because we took it all in jest and good humour but I'm not sure how quick I'd return.
