Stopped here on a whim because it was close to home and it was going to be a quick meal. Although this is a small restaurant, we were easily seated.
The ambiance is very homey, lots of pots and pans and kitchen things on the walls. Old vintage pictures of family and some string instruments also were used as décor.
The menu is typically Greek food, but if you are not into Greek food, there is a larger than large selection of burgers to choose from, along with salads galore. Our waitress told us about the nights specials of whole fish and other fresh fish entrees which sounded really delicious, but we stuck with the quick Gyro.
I had the chicken gyro with my side of lemon potatoes. It was a large portion, fresh and very tasty. Sorry I forgot the picture this time, but I was a member of the clean plate club tonight. "G" ordered the regular gyro with the side of vegetable soup. I did not hear any complaints from that side of the table. We saw other patrons with different versions of kebabs and salads. There were quite an array of different orders within the restaurant.
When I came in to be seated, it looked as if the owner was serving dinner to a couple who was less fortunate than the rest of us. It was so refreshing to see that an establish was taking the time to care for others who needed a little help. For that reason alone I would probably come back here, plus I did eye the hamburger and it looked amazing.
There is some outside seating and parking is on the street but no meters.
This is a great restaurant! Tucked away in a residential area of Oakland Gardens, one would not expect this just strolling down Union Turnpike. The menu is fairly standard for any Greek restaurant (souvlaki, gyro, spinach pie, various Greek specialties and platters) but the food is pretty darn good.
Gyro platter was just the right size and the gyro was just the right combination of crispy and tender. The wife's chicken gyro was equally tasty and the pita that comes with everything was crispy and buttery. Tzatziki sauce was good too although I would have preferred more garlic but that's just my personal taste. Other diners seafood plates looked tasty too. Deserts were pretty good but the most unique is the Greek cheesecake which is tart but not overly decadent.
Service was great too with our server making multiple suggestions and making us feel right at home. The restaurant was full of locals and the owners seemed to know all their regular customers by name. A very good choice for Greek if you're in the area.
The food is alright.. but WAAAAAAY overpriced.
Had some gyro meat.
It was ok — lots of little bone pieces, not always a pleasant thing.
Overall price for a family of 5, from what should be a middle of the road Greek joint — waaaaaaaaay too much with food that does warrant such pricing.
Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be giving my business again.
This place is great. I love the chicken souflaki. Their Greek salad is great and they have the best grilled octopus. The servers are very friendly and is definitely a neighborhood favorite. I love that it is BYOB.
This place reminds me of one of the Greek restaurants on Gordon Ramsey's kitchen. The layout of the restaurant is in similar fashion, looking like a casual American joint, serving typical Greek food.
Upon looking at the menu, I felt a bit restricted. $0.75 for extra Tzatziki sauce . $1 for extra this, extra that. Surcharge for shared platters. Usually, menus excite me, but this one highly turned me off. Furthermore, for the casual vibe of the restaurant, the prices shocked me. Ranging up to $30 for plates of seafood?! These are prices I pay for seafood at upscale NYC restaurants such as Limani…
Just like first impression qualms, I attempted to brush these concerns aside for what really matters. I shared the Gyro, souvlaki and gyro combo, dolmathakia (stuffed grape leaves), and the avgolomeno (chicken and rice in egg-lemon soup) that came with my gyro.
Here's the breakdown:
I. Gyro- mix of lamb and beef is dry. Tzatziki sauce is too sour.
II. Avgolomeno- also very sour, though the rice and chicken mix was not bad – just very sour overall
III. Gyro and souvlaki combo/ basically gyro with chicken meat/ not bad.
IV. Grape leaves were very sour. Not good.
Overall, if you have a love of sour things, you'd like this place. Unfortunately, I don't. This place, combined with the high prices, left me extremely disappointed. I've had better gyros and souvlakis elsewhere at a much lesser price. Plus, the food was really nothing special. I don't mean to shatter all the five star reviews, but I would not come here again… Unless Gordon Ramsey came through 😉
I came here with my family for the first time, and ever since then I've been coming back with my friends here and there. It's a family owned local business and I'm all about supporting local businesses. They have a decent seating area and if needed, I believe they have a larger second room for more seating.
One thing that I love about this place is their service. Since it's a family owned business, all the family members who work there are very interactive with the customers and are super friendly. The amount of times I've been here I've always been impressed with how they treat their customers. I've worked in customer service businesses before so I know what to look for, and these guys have done a very fine job.
Onto the food, the waiters and waitresses know their menu very well. So if you have questions don't be afraid to ask! I usually get a platter because it includes whatever main course entree you're getting, along with a soup/salad/potato. I've ordered their Chicken souvlaki and Lamb souvlaki platter combinations before and both were good.
Their Gyro, which I ordered the last time I went, was very good as well. Everything was held decently within the gyro and not too many of the contents fell out, but that's probably the way I eat it.
This place is a great place that I definitely recommend. It's good for catching up with friends, if you're craving greek food, or if you're looking for a nice simple place to take someone out on a date.
Hadn't been to this new GFK since they move from their Little Neck area a few years ago. After seeing the high rating on Yelp, I decided to check it out once more. It's not as large as I remember the previous location being but it's airy, modern, well-lit and much more appealing to me than the old location was.
We called in a carry out order and although I was told it would 15 minutes, it was probably closer to 20-25. Not a huge deal though (as long as the food is worth the wait). The gentleman who greeted me was pleasant enough. It would have been nice if I were offered a seat while I wait for my order to be ready, especially since it was near closing and there were plenty of tables/seats available. Again, I'm not going to dock any stars for that but just that the extra touch/thought which would have been nice.
I had the chicken gyro combo which included fries. The gyro was plenty big and tasted very fresh and delicious. It was more than enough to satisfy me even though I was fairly hungry. The fries were well made but weren't seasoned. I put my own spin on it by grinding some sea salt and black pepper on top and sprinkling a touch of paprika. That definitely did the trick!
I also tried the lamb souvlaki on a stick that my son couldn't finish (it comes with pita and tzatziki) and enjoyed that as well. Not super tender but that was maybe because it had cooled quite a but before I was able to sample it.
All in all,it was a tasty meal and I'd not hesitate to bring the family and dine in next time. To go is not a bad option though, esp. given GFK's proximity to home.
I've followed this restaurant from when it was originally in the Glen Oaks area. I can safely say I enjoy the food enough to venture here to their new location. The staff is so welcoming and friendly here.
I haven't eaten in the restaurant but it's a cute, cozy restaurant. I ordered food from here and every time I get it, everything tastes amazing, even through the car ride home. I order the gyro every time, sometimes chicken or falafel, depending on my mood. The garlic fries are amazing. Just to warn you, it leaves a smell in your car for a little while but that's just a reminder of how amazing the meal was.
