The only reason that I find myself at Sam's of Gedney Way is because this is where the model airplane club that I'm a member of has their yearly club dinner. In the past the food selection that was offered to us was very good. They would start us off with some individual pizzas to share. This was followed by a very nice antipasto platter of meats and cheeses, olives and peppers, etc. Then we would have a salad and platters of beef, chicken and a fish were brought out for us to share. This was followed up with dessert and coffee or tea. Everything was tasty and a good time was had by all.
Fast forward to this year, 2016. They no longer offer these menu choices. At the hour that our club meets Sam's could only offer us a weird brunch mix. It started off with a salad which was not half as good as what we had in previous years. They then brought out bowls of breakfast potatoes and bowls of broccoli and cauliflower. Breakfast sausages and French toast were followed by small platters of roast beef and salmon to share. Dessert and coffee followed. This "meal" was a substantial down grade from previous years. I did not feel that I received as much bang for my buck, $45, as in previous years. For that amount of money I could have had a much better dinner anyplace else. But I understand this is a club thing but I believe our club was ripped off and if I get my say this will be our last club "dinner" at Sam's of Gedney Way. The potential for a good meal is there but it was sadly lacking this time. Your results may differ.
I'm a big fan of Emma's and Rooster's on Gedney, and I've always been curious about Sam's. This past Tuesday we got a chance to have lunch there.
We decided to eat outside on their charming patio since it was so nice out. Though not incredibly fancy, it's certainly pleasant and breezy and an excellent alternative to the stuffy decor inside.
After being promptly seated we ordered our food and drinks. Our Bloody Mary's came out quickly, but they were weak and over simplified. The bartender must have been a rookie because the drinks seemed to only have 3 ingredients; vodka, tomato juice, and Tabasco. Where's the horseradish? The Worcestershire? Kinda lame.
As for the food, we went with a Greek quinoa salad with grilled chicken and a pulled pork sandwich with fries. After talking for a while, we noticed the food was taking ages to come out. Very odd, since the place wasn't all that crowded. In total I would say we waited for at least 40 minutes before taking our first bite.
The salad was fresh but it was mostly romaine lettuce with a handful of feta and a smattering of olives and tomatoes. More "stuff" would have been nice. The grilled chicken add on for $6 saved the day but overall it didn't feel like a $20 salad. Way overpriced. The pulled pork sandwich was really huge and quite delicious. Loved the fries and the slaw too. Everything was spot on, and the $12 price was very fair.
When we were done we asked for the check but again had to wait longer than anticipated. We were in a rush, so after 10 minutes we went out to the hostess station to pay. Just as we got there the waiter finally brought the check over. I have no idea why the service is so slow here but it really is annoying. I'd hate to see how slow it is when they get really packed.
Sam's gets 3 stars from me. Some ups, some downs, like many places. While I wouldnt put it at the top of my to do list, I would like to go back and try more of their BBQ one of these days.
My sister took me here, explaining that it's one of her favorite places to go and I can see why. We sat at these cute little tables next to the bar, had fantastic service, and food that was excellent start to finish.
The atmosphere is a little on the nicer side so I was a bit embarrassed that we were coming right from the gym but no one batted an eye at us. I could see a nice selection of bourbon and rye behind the bar, which is always a plus for me. And their wine and cocktail menu looked good as well.
My sister got a steak special with pepper jack mac and cheese and asparagus, while I went a classic route and got a cheeseburger. While we were waiting, some people at the bar had ordered a bunch of half price happy hour apps and their coconut shrimp looked so good that we ended up ordering one too! I couldn't believe how fast they had it out to us after we ordered and it was seriously good. It was served on a bed of, what I think was jicama mango coleslaw. Whatever it was, we enjoyed it.
The main courses were spot on. Both burger and steak were cooked exactly as ordered, the presentation of each was lovely, and the taste…on point. One thing I really appreciated about the burger (as something of a burger snob) was that while the burger was moist and juicy, at no point did my roll get soggy. Not when they served it. Not when I packed the leftovers. Not when I took it out to reheat it the next day. The steak fries were also some seriously good steak fries.
All in all I have to say I'm sorry that I was only visiting and don't get to make this place a regular. My sister says they do great corn beef and cabbage for St. Patty's Day. I may need to come back and visit…..
My dad used to go here in the 50's and 60's. Living in San Francisco, we don't have enough simple, solid American food spots like this. It is cozy and warm and old school and you get a burger or a salmon and a glass of wine, and leave happy.
Have been here twice now for business-related mealsb (CE lunch session and business association dinner). Food has been good both times and the service has been stellar. Staff are attentive and available when you need them.
Their apps and buffet have been satisfactory. Parking in the back is a big plus. We will probably host more gatherings here in the very near future.
