I like this place because it seems to offer a couple of dishes that I don't see in too many Chinese take out places around. Salt and Pepper shrimp, which is basically batter fried shrimp salted and peppers with onions and broccoli – simple and tasty. They also have Bourbon chicken which was chunks of boneless chicken tasted like it was cooked Chinese spare rib style.. it was tasty but a little over done. Their dumplings are pretty good – overstuffed with a good flavor. Not so crazy about the General Tso/Sesame chicken dishes. Great wonton soup with plenty of flavor, dark broth, julienne cuts of pork and green cooked veges (spinach? dunno, but its good).
I've lived in the area for a few years now and have tried all of the other Chinese American restaurants but never Fong Kwan. Upon recommendation from my brother, and it being super close to my apartment, I decided to give this place a try. Just like the rating states, I've DEFINITELY experienced better!
Bland is the best word I can say to sum up the taste of the food here. I ordered the steamed vegetable dumplings and the vegetable chow fun. I literally had to drown the chow fun in duck/soy sauce for it to remotely have any taste. It also hardly had any vegetables in it. The steamed vegetable dumplings also had ZERO taste. The worst part of the meal was the tomato egg drop soup. Upon first spoonful it was tasty. With further inspection I noticed that it was just plain egg drop soup with KETCHUP covering the bottom of the take-out pint!!!! UGH!! Really no excuse for that. Pure laziness to use ketchup as the tomato base in a tomato egg drop soup. With my second spoonful I just got a mouth of ketchup. Total waste of money. This was my first and last experience with Fong Kwan.
