small Halal truck parked in front of Whole Foods near the F subways station entrance on the south side of Houston.
tiny cart manned by one dude. clean exterior. and bright signs of generic food pics from chicken over rice to lamb over rice to falafel to gyros to hotdogs and hamburgers. definitely as you step close to food cart, you get hit with that swirl of aromas and spices from the Halal middle eastern eats. interestingly it doesn't choke all of Houston Street with food smells, which i think it impressive, but also because it's a closed off food cart not like other open-faced ones. the cart is always there. morning, noon, and night. least everytime i walk along Houston it's there…like a an oasis for the HANGRY cash-strapped walkers of the lower east side.
the food. better than good, but not astounding. and that works for me. i've only had the chicken over rice and chicken gyro. the chicken is well-spiced and definitely gets your mouth watering. the chicken is soft, moist, and fatty. it soaks up the various spices and the white and hot sauces well. there's a tiny bit of salad which gives a nice amount of fresh crunch to the soft rice and chicken. the rice itself is cooked appropriately and really has a nice nutty flavor as well as soaking in the chicken, spices, and sauces. i've heard the lamb is on point too, but never tried it.
the dude manning it is always friendly-ish and quick to serve.
so if you're looking for street eats or Halal–you can't go wrong here for a meal for less than $6. this cart definitely should be chipping into Whole Food hot salad bar sales bc the food is legit good and not just some mediocre dish of eats from the street.
drops mic, so i can eat outside like a savage! i out. zzzz.
