Candlewyck Diner
“Another must try – is the hanger steak sandwich and the greek salad is so good i ask them to add grilled shrimp to it; Any salad is delish!”
“They've retained some traditional diner elements, but have added things like brick oven pizza (delicious) and a very swanky ambiance–it looks very lovely.”
“Might have been the best spinach and artichoke dip ever.”

Things I Already Knew, But Were Confirmed At Candlewyck:
1. People in New Jersey take their diners very seriously.
2. Waffle fries are always better than regular fries.
3. Diner burgers are seldom cooked properly.
Things I Learned At Candlewyck:
1. This is the fanciest diner ever. So clean and nice, it's actually odd.
2. They love their burgers here. Certified fresh Angus beef, and about 15 different combos.
3. They make a good burger. Still a diner burger, but a good one.
4. Some of my co-workers will opt for a salad instead of fries. Silly co-workers. They probably got work done that afternoon.
Ambiance/Decor/Atmosphere: Gawdily eloquent and elegant browns, yellows, tans, and beiges. Not a bad environment until you remember this is a diner and there's really no reason to pretend you're a five star restaurant. You can polish a turd until it's shiny, but in the end you still have a turd.
Noise/sound level: On a Saturday morning the noise level was acceptable as there were more patrons outside enjoying the beautiful weather instead of being inside suffering the pretentiousness.
Menu: For some reason when we got there at 10am we were handed only a breakfast menu. Not sure why or if I had to ask for different menus but what if I wanted pizza or hamburgers for breakfast? Not particularly fancy about them assuming I want breakfast. Also, the menu is probably different than what the culinary team is familiar with. I ordered crispy french toast which was supposed to include chocolate chips and whipped cream, but the food came with neither.
Service: Average diner waitstaff; bring coffee around to every patron that wants, forgets accompaniments that are supposed to be with the meal, but nice and apologetic, not that being apologetic makes it better. Had to wait about fifteen minutes for french toast and waffles in a restaurant that wasn't very busy as well. The owner/manager dressed in a suit like this joint is a five star restaurant was very cold and dismissive as well.
Food: I ordered crispy french toast and my wife ordered bananas foster waffles. My meal was supposed to be STUFFED french toast; stuffed with nutella and topped with whipped cream, chocolate chips, and strawberries. It did not come with whipped cream or chips, and definitely was not stuffed. If you called three pieces of bread smeared with nutella stuffed, well. The food was not edible; only could finish one of three slices. My wife ate only one of her waffles too. The caramel sauce did not taste well and the bananas were very hard. The french toast was extremely heavy and two days later I am still sick to my stomach from it.
Bar: Full
Price: Way too high for the quality of food and service.
Overall: Wanted to try this diner for nine years now, especially since it's been remodeled, but no I will never return. Food nor service worth it.
I love this place…. I've come here a bunch of times to eat and I always forget that i'm at a diner- First off, this place is super nice and looks more like a restaurant… Staff is always friendly and quick…. is their food the best I've eaten ? No .. But is it good- yes..
If you are looking for a nice diner and with good food- come here.
I have been a customer of the Candlewyck Diner for 20+ years. I have always been happy with the diner's appearance and staff. Today I decided to stop for an after church snack. I arrived and was greeted quickly by a smiling hostess. I requested a booth as I was eating alone and didn't want to be on display. There was a small issue with getting me a booth but the staff made a quick resolve and seated my promptly.
My waitress came to the table in a good amount of time with a menu for me and yes she was also smiling. I ordered a large orange juice and asked for some time to review the menu. A little while later I made my decision and my waitress returned promptly. I ordered a Garden State Omelet with whole wheat toast and home fries. My food was brought to the table quickly and cooked perfectly. My eggs were not runny and did have a nice cooked crust along some edges; that added flavor. The home fries were somewhat generic but good anyway.
I had an enjoyable experience here today and hope you give this diner a try and that you are able to post a good review also. The Candlewyck diner has a somewhat fancy appearance but the pricing is very good. Inside the ambiance is warm and sophisticated.
I've been going to Candlewyck Diner for the past few years that I've lived in Rutherford and my experience today will change that.
I come here about once a week for breakfast and always get the Classic Eggs Benedict with a sub for cornbeef hash at an additional charge, it has never been an issue. Today, they refused to sub it, (I explained my experience in the past). Their resolution was for me to order the Classic Benny for 8.5$ and a side of cornbeef hash for 7.5$, that is a 16$ meal for a basic Benedict. Needless to say, I'll be starting to go back to Tick Tock where it is 12$. Lost a loyal customer today.
Food is decent, but not worth what they are asking for.
We had a gift card and went for a quick dinner. I had the turkey sandwich with cranberry and melted Brie., he had a burger. Good food! We wanted to finish it (4.00 left) and thought to grab one of the deserts to go. They turned out to be more than that and the guy told us to pick whatever we wanted. That was real nice. Ordered the Peanut Butter Mousse. Scrumptious.
a very nice, clean, surprisingly up-scale diner. intimidatingly HUGE menu. Great for breakfast or lunches, not so great for dinners. A great place to take friends or family for a quick, non-stuffy but nice meal.
My family and I went to Candlewyck Diner for a quick dinner, and while there were some issues, the food was pretty good and prices were adequate.
Compared to what I normally think is a typical Jersey diner, Candlewyck is positively upper-class. Of course they have the display cases with cakes on offer, and the seating area is a bit more upscale than the booths I normally think of. And I will say that the seats are very worn, and there's a divet in all the chairs where people had been sitting in them for very long. I would think you would buy durable chairs for a quick turnaround diner like this, but I guess the management didn't get that memo
I opted for the Memphis burger, which was pork and bacon on a bun. It was pretty good, but the pulled pork was not very Memphis at all, and there wasn't much barbecue sauce on the sandwich, which would have really good burgers to the next level. My partner got the ribeye, which was very fatty, but there were definitely some good portions there. My mom also enjoyed her burger and took half of it home.
Service was somewhat slow for a diner. But at the same time, that could be a welcome attitude if you wanted to lounge around for a bit. Most people were just there for a bite to eat and left.
Overall, Candlewyck is a good Jersey diner. There were so many choices on the menu, and then I wasn't disappointed in the food.
