3 1/2 stars.
I was a semi-regular at Clinton Social and hope to be the same at Jack & Co, so here's my take on my first visit experience.
Service: 4 stars
Food/Bev. 3 stars
The service experience was absolutely fine. Not perfect at the door, but once seated in the restaurant, non-stop niceness and attentiveness. The table was clean, cloth napkins, tap water on the table, no unusual pauses in service, good job.
As for the dining, let's start with the drinks. I tried two reds, both very good quality, but for the price I'd expect the pour to be a tad more generous. The food selection is interesting. The dishes are priced fairly. The sausage/kale soup comes in a creamy broth, it's quite a tasty treat. The grilled octopus dish was just ok. The octopus was warm, potatoes not warm, the hummus and olives were not helping, I just think it's a dish that needs to be reinvented. The three-cheese meatballs were good, yet I wasn't a fan of the ragu, a fresher, San Marzano tomato sauce would probably do them more justice. The fried chicken BLT was a delicious sandwich, priced right, only negative was the sweet potato fries that came with it were cold.
All in all, a good first experience with some suggestions for improvement. You should also consider that the restaurant, the bar, and the outdoor dining are unique in their own way and offer different experiences. I look forward to returning and updating my review.
if i had to sum it up in one word: disappointing.
although our waiter was super nice and tried to be as helpful as possible, service was slow and inattentive, despite it being dead on a Thursday evening. I had to chase him down more than once.
the menu was lame. Happy hour was basically non-existent, just a few house wines and beers for $5-6, which is just not the standard in hoboken. i was expecting some sort of cocktail deal or something more exciting.
we asked the waiter for suggestions on food to share. he recommended the bahn mi sandwich and the quinoa salad with chicken add on. the quinoa salad sounded so boring in the menu description that we ignored that rec and went with the bahn mi sandwich – and there was nothing bahn mi about it. just a plain old steak sandwich. fries were alright though.
We also got the octopus salad, which despite being sad-looking and over priced had one tasty octopus tentacle (and a few spoonfuls of hummus, wilted arugula, and undercooked potato wedges). not a total failure.
also wasn't impressed with the cocktails. they were very brunchy, which is fine for brunch but what i was going for after work. the peach prosecco one and strawberry mule were sweet and lacking in booze and the jill's bloody mary (also lacking in booze) was unpalatable – tasted like icy cold MSG.
not going back. big downgrade from clinton social (which wasn't all that good but was a solid neighborhood spot).
Nice upgrade on this space. I stopped in on a crowded Thursday and we were able to get seats at the bar. Service was a little slower, however the cocktails – particularly those with bourbon – are fantastic. I'll be back. Probably still working out the kinks with service. I haven't eaten here yet, but the burgers look awesome.
Jack&Co is going through a rough patch by the looks of the other reviews- primarily issues with the service. I think they if they can manage out a few tweaks – we are looking at a great establishment.
My experience was a great one. Craig, our bartender was awesome. He knows his stuff. Tell him exactly what you are into and he'll mix something up to your liking. He made a few delicious Old Fashioned drinks for my best friend & I. He also recommended us to try the Lobster Mac & Cheese ($19) which was delicious. Every person that sat at the bar was greeted and taking care of.
Drink prices- $12/$13 – hm for Hoboken and the drinks that are being served- I think that's about right.
Nice atmosphere, lovely interior.
Yes I'll be back to get my full dining experience but for now I think it's safe to say that my first impression was 4 star worthy!
Service is excellent, food is decent, and prices are reasonable. We came here for dinner, but the bar space looks like a good place to grab a drink with friends. The vibe in general is a little confusing because on the one hand the food and cocktail list scream eclectic gastropub, but on the other hand, there are sporting events displayed on the various tvs. I do recommend the strawberry basil mule!
Reclaimed wood, subway tile, edison bulbs, mason jars…rinse. repeat. reuse. That's Hoboken's new business model as of late. So yeah I think 3 is the right number here, as was it for the predecessor Clinton Social which is a bit disappointing.
Been a couple times now once for drinks and once for brunch. I would say both we just A-OK. The service both times was good however, I can't complain there but the drinks and the food were just kinda A-OK. We did get overcharged for happy hour drinks, only by a few bucks and we were in a rush so I didn't complain. I just drank beer, but the wife got the Strawberry Mule. It was good, mind blowing, no but again A-OK.
For brunch, I ordered the chicken and biscuits. The chicken was very good and well done, the biscuits were good too, could use a little more substance to them as it was tiny and fairly flat. The sausage gravy lacked seasoning and sausage. I had to salt them up, which I never do. While the dish was overall OK it wasn't the best I've had. The house hash that came with it was a little on the cold side but not bad. The wife got the grilled Ceaser salad. Which is a bit misleading to me, we asked if it came with chicken, and he said with whatever protein you like so she got chicken. Well the dish is literally grilled lettuce and the chicken was a $5 add on (we found out at bill time) to an already $12 salad. I would advise against getting the salad alone, it wasn't much and she said had basically no dressing. She said it was OK.
I was hopeful for a better experience than Clinton Social but, overall it's a decent place that if friends were meeting there or decided to go there I'd meet them, but I wouldn't go out of my way to swing by.
This was my second time coming to Jack & Co and I think it is deserving of 3.5 stars. After reading the other reviews especially coming from the dining experience I think what people need to understand is this is not The Clinton Social. Both restaurants have a different feel to it and are going for a different drink/food vibe. When you do come here for dinner especially you have to keep that in mind.
Let's start with the cocktails. Craig has to be the best mixologist in town! What I like that Jack & Co does is really specialize on each drink you order to your liking. The staff does an excellent job recommending their speciality cocktails or if you want your usual they can certainly whip that up too. I've had the Old Fashioned both times I have come and haven't been disappointed yet.
Recently when I went I decided to try the dining experience. Jen our waitress was pleasant throughout the entire evening. My cousin and I had numerous questions regarding the menu and she answered every single one without hesitation. (The menu is very limited with its options so beware for my picky eaters.) Whenever we needed another drink or plate we did not have to wait long. The service was definitely 5 stars.
For an appetizer we ordered The Baked Meatballs and for dinner we shared The Lobster Mac and Cheese and The Chicken BLT. The food was OK. For the price I thought the portions were very small. The meatballs tasted very bland to me. No flavor really but the tenderness of the meat itself was nice to chew. The mac and cheese which I was really looking forward to (I had ordered it my first time there) was very creamy and extremely fishy this time around. The chicken was probably my favorite meal but it was tiny and definitely not something for two people to share.
Jack & Co is a really nice place if you are ready to enjoy some mind blowing cocktails and have an open mind on food. I will be back to give the food another try (third times a charm) and of course to have a cocktail.
