Hop Fa is the fifth Chinese bakery to open on a short stretch of Bay Parkway between 65th Street and 69th Street. The sign was up for the longest time before they finally opened their doors recently. Its name proclaims it a typical Chinese bakery, and it looks no different than the average one, albeit on the small and homely side, but it actually differentiates itself with a larger selection of dim sum, rices, and noodles for order. After a few takeout tries, I am pleased to find it reasonably good for the area. The better dim sum include beef rice rolls, beef balls, stuffed eggplant (albeit much smaller than Joy's K), sticky rice, and spare ribs. Rice orders such as steamed pork pancake and fried egg over rice, or black bean spare ribs and fried egg over rice, are surprisingly good and an absolute steal at $2.75 each.
Very good pricing, and cheaper than its only major dim sum takeout alternative in the area, Joy's K, while being of at least comparable quality. In addition to cooked foods, they have a relatively smaller selection of baked buns and pastries, possibly not baked on site as the cooked foods seem to be their main item, and a succinct beverage menu with the basic offerings (e.g., tea, coffee). A few casual tables, where you'll usually find a people settled in with newspapers. I'll be doing takeout here pretty regularly.
After a long day, I was craving some dim sum dishes. I brought Pei Guen, Cheong fan and Chiu-chao fan guo. It came out to be $6. The food is good; it definitely did not lack flavor. The cashier was very helpful since I didn't know the names of dishes.
Love that this bakery serves fresh dim sum and congee. I usually like to order the spare ribs with rice rolls. It is yummy and filling. Basically everything here is cheap. Service is great. The woman speaks English so don't be hesitant to come in and ask about something (for you non-Chinese speakers). You're bound to find something delicious!
I just want to start off by saying that the ladies behind the counter at Hop Fa Bakery were actually nice to my sister and myself. I'm very thankful for the previous Yelpers who reviewed this spot and noted the poor customer service; by setting the expectation, we were expecting to do the quick and dirty – order and pay with minimal help. The ladies were very nice to us (maybe Thanksgiving Day had something to do with it?), and they were patient as we told them what we were looking to buy.
The dim sum – as noted by others – is very good and extremely cheap. We ordered beef and shrimp rice rolls, two orders of the beef balls, a bean curd dish and something steam-wrapped in leaves. All of the dishes were comparable to what we would pay at the sit-down restaurants that serve dim sum, but the bakery offers them for much cheaper. The beef ball orders are HUGE, they're at least 1.5x bigger than what you normally see, but my boyfriend loved it.
This bakery isn't very large, but they've really maximized the use of space here with their tables and chairs. Many of the locals were sitting there for their daily dose of java/caffeine and leisurely chatting. They made it look so effortless and relaxing.
Hop Fa Bakery is a good choice for food if you're in the area. Heck, they were even worth me driving past my usual spot and 10 minutes out of the way!
I really like this bakery for their dim sum. They have a good selection. Besides dim sum they have noodle and other food. Since this is a bakery they also have bakery items like buns, cake, and bread.
This is one of the few bakeries on Bay Parkway. It has a large variety of things such as buns, cakes, dim sum, drinks etc.
There is seating at the bakery if you want to smell the beautiful scent of old chinese people.
This is across the street from the train station and is very convenient for those who want to grab breakfast before they board the crowded N train.
