Came here on a Saturday afternoon just in time for happy hour. Got some canned beers at the bar but the bartender was a grump. Totally killed my vibe. We left as soon as we finished the beers.
Maybe next time, South House!
I am a huge fan of this area in Jersey City. We love to try all the places for dinner at least once. And once is all it will be at south house. The tables were small and not good for having a meal. (Great to sit and drink at though) They had an awful menu with not many options at all, I think they had a souther style menu but still not sure. I got a burger cooked rare and it came out almost well done. The waiter took forever and was constantly just dancing by the bar with friends. I don't doubt this place is good for drinks with friends for a casual night out, but I would never order food there again not recommend.
Been here a fee times to grab a drink. Ambiance is beautiful and lively, especially in the warmer months.
So far I've only had the opportunity to visit here for a drink, highly due to the fact that I haven't heard anything good about the food. I'm absolutely avoiding the possibility of somebody messing up some good southern cooking, but one day i'll venture for a meal. For now the drinks here are pretty good. I've had a good smoked old fashioned here and the bartenders really know what they're doing. Be prepared to pay the "NY price" however. No cheap drinks here
Adorable bar/restaurant right off the Grove Street path. Amazing atmosphere, very warm and inviting yet trendy. I didn't stay for dinner, just drinks and apps, but they were delicious. We had wings, fries, mac n cheese and the bacon wrapped onion rings. I implore everyone that reads this review to try the bacon wrapped onion rings, they are beyond amazing and well worth the calories. The South House cocktail is also great, perfect for that long day after work. I've heard the brunch they do is also great, so I'll definitely go back to try that out. They have live music start at 8pm, but if that gets to loud for people just trying to quietly chat, you can always go to the bar downstairs. It's a cute setup with a pool table and loungey couches (bathrooms are also downstairs). Absolutely must stop in to this awesome JC hangout.
Came here during MDW weekend, so it was a bit dead but a good down to Earth vibe instead of being super packed like it usually is.
The drinks are a bit pricy and service is so-so. The lighting is always super dark and intimate, I wish it would be like one notch brighter.
I just got the BBQ wings, which were pretty delicious. My drink of choice is usually jamo & ginger, however it tasted all ginger, no jamo to me, so thumbs down for me.
South house is absolutely beautiful in terms of appearance. I really enjoy the ambience as well. My favorite part about south house is the downstairs rec room. They have a pool table, shuffle board table, foose ball table, and darts. The decor is really nice and it's just a cool place to meet people while enjoying some activities as opposed to just standing there with a cocktail in your hand.
Of course there is a downside to south house. We don't have many southern cuisine spots in downtown Jersey City so I was really excited about this place. However, the food just did not meet my expectations. The wings were rubbed instead of slathered with sauce which is fine but it was flavorless and, worst of all, super dry. I can't see how you could go wrong with wings. My friend ordered the fried chicken with Mac and cheese and he advised that it was mediocre at best. My other friend ordered the chili and she didn't even finish it. I mean I would give it a second chance just because I do like the place. The cocktails are not as good as the dull boy or third and vine but it's still enjoyable.
The crowd is pretty diverse with equal ratio of men and women in their 20-30s. I have no complaints about the service and the bouncer at the door is really nice. I do recommend for you to try this place out at least once.
South House is a very nice looking restaurant with old record covers on the walls and large leafy plants at every corner. It's spacious inside. It has a game room.
What it lacks unfortunately, is really good food. I've been here on several occasions and each time I am super excited to try something on the menu – brisket one night, mac n cheese another, chili with fritos, bacon wrapped onion rings…and each time I have left feeling like I ate a ton of bricks and need to be rolled home.
I get that I should have that expectation when I come here. It's Southern Food after all, but there is a difference between "really delicious and worth every calorie" fatty food and "only okay I wish I had saved those calories for something else" fatty food.
I feel that at South House it's the latter.
I am also not super crazy about the crowd here after 9pm.
For that, I probably won't be back to South House for the food. I heard there's a game room, though?
Hubs and I were craving some good BBQ and decided to give South House a try. I must say we were very pleasantly surprised! The whole experience from walking into the gigantic, retro themed space, to our awesome waiter, and then the food – we will definitely be coming back and bringing our friends here.
What we ordered:
Chili con queso – tortilla chips made in house! queso came out nice and warm, only gripe was that it was a bit heavy as an appetizer. Especially if the food takes a while to come out, you can easily fill up on this alone.
Pork taco special – my husband ordered this and LOVED it. I tried a few bites and understood why – so much flavor and the right amount. Pork tender and juicy. Sprinkle with lime to add that extra dimension.
Stack of Ribs – YUM. Exactly what I was craving. Meat falling off the bone. Came with potato salad which was tasty as well and provided a great complement.
