So I came down here around 5pm on a Friday evening to go to Zak's Halal Cart or Alan's Falafel (located in front of the Brown Brothers Harriman building), and I was a bit sad when I found out that both carts have already closed up shop and the cart closest to Cedar St was still open (cart to the very left of Zak's, the smoothie cart, Alan's Falafel, etc.). I then noticed that this lesser frequented cart had also put a sign up for a Chicken Platter w/ Soda for $5, which I presume is because he is getting no business because of Zak's similar deal.
So I went up to the cart and ordered a Chicken over rice with a Diet Coke for $5. As he was preparing my platter, I noticed there was not a lot of meat left, the majority of it sitting in a stainless steel catering tray. I figured it was expected as it was nearing the end of the day so I didn't complain. He threw a couple spoonfuls of yellow rice, chicken, peppers and onions, and white sauce with a splash of hot sauce (as requested). The platter looked all too familiar to the other hundred halal carts in the city, standard-fare halal cart. The platter, diet coke, some napkins, and a fork were bagged in a "I Love NY" white plastic bag. I grabbed a straw from the box on the outside of the cart, because you know how dirty the outside of those soda cans could be.
Finally digging into my platter, the chicken was pretty standard, tender and moist, good-tasting but nothing to raise an eyebrow about. The yellow rice was slightly soggy with barely any spices for taste. The white sauce was decent, not too runny or too thick, a perfect consistency, but this also lacked in any herbs for flavor. The hot sauce had a bit of heat which was the only thing that had this platter going. Besides that, I'd recommend trying any of the other several dozen halal carts in the neighborhood in hopes that you may score something better. A good deal of $5 for chicken over rice with a soda, but that won't entice me to come back here any time soon. There's a reason why Zak's Halal cart and Alan's Falafel cart always have long lines, and this one tends to be empty.
I can here for breakfast today. Last cart on the left. Got two eggs on a roll with cheese for a $1.75. Made fresh and it was hot and tasty. Guys on the truck smile and want your business. You should check them out. Fast and delicious. I'd come here again.
