Rutt’s Hut
“They are called rippers because Rutt's Hut deep fries these hot dogs so much that the skin tears and becomes chewier.”
“I've been to other hot dog eateries featured on the cable networks, but I keep coming back to Rutt's. I am a Cremator fan.”
“And you can finish the whole meal off with a refreshing cup of Birch Beer (a quickly vanishing mark of quality).”

How do you go wrong with fried hot dogs?? You don't as long as its at Rutt's Hut home of the Ripper!
Dam fine dive bar and restaurant. Draft beers, gravy fries, oh YUM de DUM!
There are a few entrances and depending on which one you go trough will depend on your experience.
1. There is the "Counter" entrance. Grab a few quick rippers, fried clams or whatever you are jonesing for … eat at the counter or take it to go. You will have the front line experience of the fine cooks. If you can decipher their internal lingo, Ill personally buy your next ripper.
2. The "back" entrance. Normally reserved for groups, softball, baseball teams, families, etc. Do yourself a favor and ask for Denise! She my girl. Quick friendly service every time!
3. The "Bar" entrance- Local old timers and Hooligans enter here. Belly up tot he bar, enjoy.
Love the original signs in the bar for food items, local nostalgia, and the "blackboard" specials. Don't kid yourself, this place can make an incredible hot dog as well as the "duck a l'orange"
Oh, if you can score the recipe for the special relish, Send it to me!
Rippers are amazing. Love ruts hut. The place is a dive but makes kick ass hot dogs and sides.
Rutts is the go to dog place in the area. Simple place that hasn't been updated in 100 years, we used to always stop on the way back from NYC. Deep fried dogs and fries are the way to go with the mustard and relish that sits in the table. Cash only so be aware. They have their own language, I always order 2 "rippers" and you will get the right amount of cooking
People swear by this place
I died
I don't eat red meat
I don't eat hot dogs
No seats
Cash only
Outdated and dirty
Not my style
I had not had a hot dog in possibly what is YEARS. Going here, however, I had to dive in and I must say it was an excellent experience! Not sure, for someone that likes a plain dog, what else I can say. The onion rings were a bust — tasteless and too greasy. The counter service was almost funny. Not rude or friendly — just cash only and unemotional. The place itself needs some fixing — yes, forget a refresh as it is an icon, however, I hope it does not cross the somewhat fine line of going from an icon to a wreck.
NJ has a lot of hot dog institutions. I believe most people are probably partial to the one they grew up going to as a child, and for me, that's Rutt's Hut. When I was little we would get our food, bring it to the car, and my sister and I would throw our left over bits of buns out the window to the seagulls. Back then my order was a hot dog and a yoo hoo with shared onions rings and fries. Not much about my order has changed except for the occasional taylor ham and cheese sandwich and the yoo hoo doesn't happen so often. Likewise, not much has changed about Rutt's Hut. Same food, same familiar faces, same frenchie traveling! I definitely would recommend getting the fries well done if you like them crispy. Love their relish and love their mustard.
BUT before I end this review, I must disclose that THESE ARE MY FAVORITE ONION RINGS IN THE WORLD. They're tumbleweed onion rings so they're just a ball of breaded fried onions jammed into a bag leaking grease by the second. I know this may not appeal to all but I cannot get enough of them. The worst part of any meal at Rutt's is when I go to grab of fistful of those onion rings and realize we finished them
I grew up on Paterson hotdogs as my father is from that city. We would make regular trips to Johnny & Hanges (at the original Paterson location) and have their chili dogs. So devoted was my dad to J&H that I don't recall ever venturing over to Clifton to try one of the Ripper's at Rutt's.
So today, for the first time in my life I decided to check out his legendary establishment as well. I'm glad I did …. The Ripper, which is a deep fried hotdog, is something the likes of which I've never had before. It tasted great. However, at the end of the day I have to admit that I do prefer the chili dogs of my youth. But I guess that's just what having Paterson roots does to you.
As for the establishment itself – wow – this place is definitely in need of renovations, it shows its age which does add to its charm. Definitely old Jersey school. There is a bar on one side (which I didn't go into) and the main food area on the other.
Will I come back – definitely. It's worth the trip!
I have finally tried this place and it surely didn't disappoint . I had the ripper with the relish which was delicious . I'm glad I made the trip all the way from bridgewater .
