I was surprised by this place especially since I did not know if was Indian, chinese, or just straight up fusion. It's everything. They have a great lunch special and the portions are huge. I would go again just to try their Indian flared Asian dishes like Masala Rice.
I have to preface this review and say that some of the food I have had here is very good and others not so. The lollipop chicken appetizer and manchurian fried rice is good. But other than this, I had a very upsetting experience here the last time I came and could only give 1-star.
I called the restaurant to order take out food at approximately 9 pm on a weeknight. After several phone calls, without any response, I decided to drive to the restaurant since I was headed that direction anyway. Before I went inside, I checked to see the time of closing posted outside — 10 pm. I went inside to ask hostess/waitress why hasn't anyone been picking up the phone. The response I received was, "after 9 pm we don't answer the phone if we are busy." Now, from a business perspective, this is a very poor response to make to a customer. To say the least, I was astonished and more-so shocked at the response.
To top it all off, after my food order was completed; I waited about 5 minutes at the front without any approach by a staff member. After waiting, I noticed my food was on the counter and I swiftly decided to take it because I already paid. I left and will likely never return.
By my observations, it seemed that the person at the counter who should have been answering take-out calls, was also functioning as the waitress. If this is the case, then it's an error that defaults on management and they should work to improve this.
Really great place. I have ordered and picked up from them a couple of times. They offer a vast majority of dishes. One of my favorites is the Sagar Sizzling Prawn. Very spicy and they don't skimp on the spice. Their portions are a pretty good size and their desserts are pretty good. The delivery person is very nice. I only wish they had delivery available on the weekends as well which they don't so you have to pick up your order if you want Sagar that day.
First off it is one of the best Indo Chinese around!
There are a few others that are comparable but their lollipop and general Tao are all I crave!
Make sure you are prepared to wait to be seated on a weekend due to the crowds that come for the halal Chinese.
We always keep a back up incase it is too crowded.
However totally worth the wait once you are seated!
I was there last night and just chowed down some mancurian fried rice, which were amazingly seasoned and didn't need to be paired with anything great on its own.
The wait staff is constantly working hard to keep their costumers happy which is great to see and their food is great I wish they took reservations but considering they aren't a huge location it makes sense.
Having come here twice now, I feel I have a more representative picture of what Sagar Chinese has to offer. A Bangladeshi mixed Chinese cuisine, it is pretty spacious, great for groups, good service, with a clean bathroom (props for the automatic spray air freshener), and parking available on the street (metered) or around the residential area immediately surrounding it.
However, i would rate the food pretty low – between a 2-2.5. Unless you are coming in to get the lollipop chicken, which I think is the only noteworthy thing in my opinion. Other than that, I have tried:
-the sizzling chicken (bland inside, OK sauce)
-manchurian chicken (awkward, unpleasant sour taste)
-sesame chicken (good, but why pay twice the price of chinese take out for this here?)
-masala chicken (bland inside, OK sauce again, no vegetables inside either).
This place is still very popular despite the reviews though, and it seems very hit or miss – some people are in love with this place, others not at all. I mean, the good thing is they are very accommodating to small and large groups…
When I'm in this area visiting family, we gather over a meal. When mom dukes isn't in cooking mode we order from numerous quality Indian restaurants and occasionally from Sagar for Indo-Chinese. My experience as a former frequent take-out customer plummeted past acceptance last weekend.
In general, the employees and phone manner is pleasant while the food is ready in expected time. The quality of the food, however which was okay at best, has gotten worse. As an example, Hakka noodles is a standard option that is hard not to accomplish and thereby judgeable of a restaurant's quality a la Pad Thai or Spaghetti is to their respective cuisines. What I received was something like Lo Mein sin soy sauce or any distinctive flavor. Alternatively, the sauce in our Ginger lamb was congealed and basic on the palate. Some ginger, no garlic, no salt., no spice!
After following up with them regarding my disappointment, they tried to do right by me by offering an alternative dish… the spicier, Chili Lamb. Unfortunately, the infusion of green chillies did little to please the other flavors I expected. As it stands, I will not be ordering from here despite the large crowds this restaurant draws on the weekends.
I have been going to Sagar Chinese for many, many years. I remember going when it first opened up in Jamaica and it has remained authentic and true to its Asian Fusion Chinese food specialty.
The lolly pop chicken is their best appetizer. One order gets you 6 lolly pops. The chicken is great but the sauce it comes with is even better! It has a mayo base and not sure what else in it but it is the best dipping sauce for chicken. If you come to Sagar, be sure to check this out.
I recommend the Sagar fried rice, Masala Chow Mein, and any of their chicken entrees (Chilli Chicken, Sweet n Sour chicken). I don't like their sizzling chicken entree much because I think it lacks flavor, but it is fun to watch the dish make its way from the kitchen to your table and have it sizzle all the way with all the smoke.
I'm not a huge fan of their beef because it tastes kind of chewy to me.
Like most other asian fusion restaurants, Sagar uses a lot of spices and masala. Sometimes it is a good thing but other times, less is more. But this is a problem with most asian fusion places so I can't complain too much (-1 star).
This is also one of the cheaper asian fusion spots (compared to Nanking and Tangra Masala). Each dish typically costs $8-$9 and it is family style dining so the portions are huge. One fried rice can be comfortably split between 3-4 people.
The Bellerose location has ample seating and the environment is intimate. It is good for groups of no more than 10 people.
Basically, if you want affordable asian fusion Chinese food, check out Sagar Chinese.
Come with an opened mind. It states Chinese on the name, but it's not your traditional Chinese styled dishes.
I think the chow mein and the fried rice were all pretty good, but bordering close to the bland side. I didn't come for that though, I came for the lollipop chicken and that I would say is worth every penny. Nothing else was really impressive or stood out for me to have to come back for though.
