we generally are driving by gan asia, but yesterday, the first time i happen to be walking by, i decided to drop in and grab a takeout menu. the sushi chef is right out front, so needing something to hold me over till dinner, i decide to get a spicy salmon roll.
the space is literally the size of a closet and it's take out/delivery only. and having watched way too much food network, zimmern and bourdain, im actually super excited for this hole in the wall.. but the excitement is quickly extinguished as im waiting for my order and reading the yelp reviews. too late to cancel my order so i suck it up and take my salmon rolls home…
not sure if these reviews tainted my rolls, but overall, i have no complaints. the rice was a bit hard but the salmon wasnt all bad – just your typical salmon.
altho i have to admit, i prb wont bother returning to try the chinese food based on the poor reviews.
I wonder how many other Yelpers have experienced this phenomenon – you start writing your review for Yelp even before you've tried the food? And you presume based on the decor and the menu and maybe some glowing recommendations that the food is going to be great and you just know that the restaurant is getting at least four or maybe even five stars in your imaginary review?
This explains perfectly what was going through my mind when I ordered food at Gan Asia. I just presumed that the food would be great – a small, hole in the wall, glatt kosher Chinese/Thai place on the Upper West Side. You know, the kind of place Guy Fieri can't resist getting his paws on … Talk about under-whelming! I ordered a pint of Tom Yum soup and chicken satay – I was in the mood for kosher Thai, not so much Chinese – and the food was just, well, meh. The soup did not taste Thai at all – no galanga, no kaffir lime, just kind of a tomato soup with Asian vegetables. And the satay – well, honestly I did not think you could screw up satay. Well, you can. You can put two, warm chicken spears on sticks in a bag with an almost solid peanut "sauce" and a very diluted pineapple "sauce" (think juice).
Terribly disappointing 🙁
Is there a zero stars option? I unfortunately wanted to order from Asia Kan, however my dumbass called this number. $18.99 for basic chicken dishes? What? The dumplings were ATROCIOUS, literally not edible, and the amount of grease from these dishes is making me feel like I'm breaking out already. Gag yuck erlack ew bleh
