They really have to change the name of the restaurant. At first, I thought I was just being picky because I just moved out here and was looking for something from home, something I obliviously couldn't find. Honestly, I don't care that the food is not authentically Chinese. I know they didn't open this place to make authentic Chinese food. They're catering to the clientele, so it's all good!
What I do have a problem with, is how they don't make food well. You can still make American-Chinese food well! Not this place! Having been to many American-Chinese establishments by now, I can tell you…this place may look pretty, but the food is the worst!
Hot and Sour Soup:
Not hot or sour! Being "hella Asian", I may cook and dip with soy sauce, but I so rarely add it to my food. I had to add soy sauce, vinegar, hot oil, and black pepper (all from my own kitchen cabinet) to this flavorless goo soup.
Singapore Chow Mei Fun:
Here's a dish that varies at every location, but always contains multiple types of meat. My GF loves the heavy curry and spiciness of a good Singapore Noodle dish, but doesn't care for the meat. She requested to exclude all meats, except the shrimp. The guy asked her why she doesn't just order the Shrimp Mei Fun, "It's the same." I guess we should have seen that as a bad sign. Chinese-ish-style Mei Fun is nothing like Singapore-style. The seasoning is totally different! When we brought it home, the fucker gave us Shrimp Mei Fun. You can't taste or see any curry or spice. Again, I had to pull out condiment after condiment from my own kitchen to make the dish edible.
My GF "did" love this place, but that was before she hooked up with a "hella Asian" girlfriend. Either her taste has changed…or this place has changed…or this placed had always sucked and she is just now realizing it. She hates this place now.
NOT Number One!
Number NONE!!!!
I've been coming here since I was a little girl. The owners have changed but I still make it a point to stop by whenever I'm back in the neighborhood. I have heard that the food has gotten worse but I haven't had a problem with it.
They were able to serve my large family without any problems and the waitstaff was really nice. They told my grandmother they couldn't believe she was my grandmother, lol.
Food was good (though honestly I've had better) and the service was great.
Despite the very low rating they have on Yelp, anyone within 5 miles of this place will tell you, Number One has the best Chinese-American food in the area. Them and Chinese spot at Willowbrook mall, but that's another review.
This place is busy all the time, attracting all sorts of characters! It's often times is a turnoff for some, but when it's good food, it's good. Here's the scoop: You can call and place an order for take out, you can go up to the counter and place your order, OR if you're visiting solo, they have a la carte, someone behind the counter who will scoop the food you're pointing at into a notorious Chinese Styrofoam container. No really sure if this is by the number of entrees or by the pound, but that's how they roll. And it seems to be working for them too.
I suggest to take out option. I came in here two Saturdays ago and had placed an order for chicken wings, a quart sized shrimp with lobster sauce, and pint of broccoli with brown sauce. "Broccoli with Brown Sauce" (a.k.a. the sauce that usually comes with Beef w/ Broccoli) wasn't on the menu, but I had asked and they were able to do it. It took about 10 minutes for the order to be done.
A cup of brown rice in substitute for white is $1.00. A pint of brown rice is $1.50.
