Manna House Bakery

“Some of my other favorites are their custard bun, pineapple bun, mexico bun and coconut bun.”

“I can confidently say that no egg tart comes close — this was the best egg tart I've ever tasted.”

“Forget Taipan or Fay Da with their mass-produced, shoddy baked goods and surly servers.”

  1. Review for the dan tats or egg custard tarts. They say that the French make the best buttery, flaky pastries, but clearly, they haven't met the masters behind the Chinese dan tat. Manna's dan tats have the flakiest, most delicious tasting pastry crust of any other Chinese bakery and even the French bakeries. French pastries unfortunately become soggy if you don't eat them right out of the oven. Yet, somehow Manna manages to keep the layers crispy and flaky with each bite and still pronounced after a couple of hours of sitting in my fridge. The egg custard is smooth, eggy, and slightly sweet. It doesn't form a weird film on the top like some other bakeries' tarts. If you're lucky enough to be able to heat them back up in the toaster oven at home, you'll be enveloped in the aroma of buttery pastry crust. I've had a lot of dan tats in Chinatown, Flushing, and Brooklyn's 8th Ave in my lifetime and I can say these are consistently the best in the City! Buy one or two at a time… or grab 20 like me for Chinese New Year!

  2. There are a a lot of Chinese bakeries my mom goes to by bread and pastries for the family's breakfast the week ahead. There's no rhyme or reason just which ever one is nearby that sells a god variety. I'm usually her mule/ox who follows her at every stop and carries the grocery and food.

We came here on a Sunday afternoon and noticed that this place was very busy and didn't have a seating area. The place is small but was cranking out a lot of freshly baked goods.

The ladies behind the counter are fast and i think understand English well. I'm not that picky when it comes to the breakfast options as long as its not savory or meaty because having spoiled curry chicken bun is not a good way to start a Wednesday or Thursday.

I'd come back here for more.

  3. This is my favorite bakery in Chinatown and it's a huge plus that it's so close to where I live. On most days, you can spot (and/or hear) a friendly old man standing outside waving to passers-by inviting them to go inside.

My go-tos are the warm roast pork buns, the dried shredded pork buns, and the pineapple buns. They also make a really great milk tea. Typically a small baked good and a small cup of milk tea costs me $2.10 which makes for a cheap and delicious breakfast.

The prices go down in the afternoon as they near closing time – you can usually get two baked goods for $1.50 or $1.75 but there isn't much to choose from. Nonetheless, I've gotten some really good croissant breads and cookies from the afternoon selections.

The service is always friendly and quick, but it's Chinatown – when you're ready to order, make sure to let someone know or you may be ignored if you just stand idly by.

  4. It's a little more expensive than other bakeries in Chinatown, but it's worth it. It's $1.10 per baked good (for most items – the fancier cakes, of course, cost more).

I got the roast pork bun and the triangular sponge cake. The roast pork bun tasted fresh and it was delicious! Also, they do not skimp on the filling! The triangular sponge cake was light and airy and the cream in between the layers had just the right amount of sweetness.

  5. My favorite bakery in chinatown.  Our favorite is the piggy bread which is plain bread with a sweet wash and sesame on top.  This is the only bakery in Ctown which have them all the time.  I buy a dozen at a time!  Most of the time it's still warm.  I also love their ice tea withe lemon…so refreshing!

  6. limited selection of breads – there are better bakeries in chinatown.
breads avg $1 each and those available are pretty good / fresh.
I prefer the bakeries along grand street – there's a lot more variety and options at places like Sweet House or Good Century Cafe

  7. My favorite chinese bakery! We should all know the ladies that work behind these counter are usually grumpy bears, but not at Manna. For once, the ladies are nice, and they don't let people just skip you. Love love love their egg tarts, and their minced pork sponge cakes. Delish!

  8. PINEAPPLE BUNS.. i think i've finally found one that is exactly like the ones i LOVE back home in LA.. Double Crispy bakery is a close 2nd

DISCLAIMER: yes, they display a C health grade rating…. C for Chinese? i guess i look past that grade rating because i'm a fan of the pineapple buns

i'm not sure if they speak english.. i only heard my dialect of Cantonese here BUT i'm sure if you point at your selections you'll survive!
—pineapple bun w/ custard filling: $1, so if you want the one w/o filling point to the pineapple bun that costs 90 cents!… crumbly yellow top, thick pasty filling, just the way i grew up with

they've also got lots of cakes, cake rolls, & drinks!
